Book Synopsis The Doctrine of Being in the Aristotelian Metaphysics by : Joseph Owens
Download or read book The Doctrine of Being in the Aristotelian Metaphysics written by Joseph Owens and published by PIMS. This book was released on 1978 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of being is central to Western metaphysics. Etched sharply in the verses of Parmenides, it took on distinctive colouring in Aristotle as the subject matter of a science expressly labelled 'theological.' For Aristotle, being could not be shared in generic fashion by other natures. As a nature it had to be found not in various species but in a primary instance only. The science specified by the primary nature was accordingly the one science that under the aspect of being treated universally of whatever is: it dealt with being qua being.

Book Synopsis Classics in the History of Greek Mathematics by : Jean Christianidis
Download or read book Classics in the History of Greek Mathematics written by Jean Christianidis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twentieth century is the period during which the history of Greek mathematics reached its greatest acme. Indeed, it is by no means exaggerated to say that Greek mathematics represents the unique field from the wider domain of the general history of science which was included in the research agenda of so many and so distinguished scholars, from so varied scientific communities (historians of science, historians of philosophy, mathematicians, philologists, philosophers of science, archeologists etc. ), while new scholarship of the highest quality continues to be produced. This volume includes 19 classic papers on the history of Greek mathematics that were published during the entire 20th century and affected significantly the state of the art of this field. It is divided into six self-contained sections, each one with its own editor, who had the responsibility for the selection of the papers that are republished in the section, and who wrote the introduction of the section. It constitutes a kind of a Reader book which is today, one century after the first publications of Tannery, Zeuthen, Heath and the other outstanding figures of the end of the 19th and the beg- ning of 20th century, rather timely in many respects.

Book Synopsis The Politics of Form in Greek Literature by : Phiroze Vasunia
Download or read book The Politics of Form in Greek Literature written by Phiroze Vasunia and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Politics of Form in Greek Literature explores the relationship between form and political life specifically in Greek textual culture. In the last generation or so, classicists (and their counterparts in other disciplines) have begun to pay greater attention to the socio-historical contexts of literary production and sought to historicize aesthetic practice. However, historicism (and in particular New Historicism) is only one mode of approaching the question of form, which is increasingly brought into dialogue with a number of other issues (e.g. gender). Bringing together contributions from a range of experts, this volume examines these and other related approaches, assessing their limitations and discussing possibilities for the future. Individual chapters discuss an array of ancient authors, including Homer, Sophocles, Euripides, Plato, Aristotle, Callimachus, and more, and sketch out the specifically Greek contribution to the debate, as well as the implications for other disciplines. What emerges from this book are new ways of thinking about form, and indeed about politics, that will be of value to scholars and students across the humanities and social sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Ancient Greek Literature is an exceptional and comprehensive textbook of Europe's oldest civilization. The book covers the ancient Greek literature from the earliest texts until the time of the Byzantine Empire. It begins with the earliest surviving works of ancient Greek literature, the two epic poems the Iliad and the Odyssey, set in an idealized archaic past today identified as having some relation to the Mycenaean era. Homer's epics as well as the Homeric Hymns and the two poems of Hesiod, Theogony and Works and Days, comprised the major foundations of the Greek literary tradition that would continue into the Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman periods. All above mentioned periods are presented in this book with a special emphasise on every particularly literary genre of ancient Greek literature - epic poetry, lyric poetry, drama, historiography and philosophy. Contents Homer Lesser Homeric Poems; Hesiod; Orpheus The Descendants of Homer, Hesiod, and Orpheus The Song The Beginnings of Prose Herodotus Philosophic and Political Literature to the Death of Socrates Thucydides The Drama Aeschylus Sophocles Euripides Comedy Plato Xenophon The 'Orators' Demosthenes and His Contemporaries The Later Literature, Alexandrian and Roman
Book Synopsis The Daēva Cult in the Gāthās by : Amir Ahmadi
Download or read book The Daēva Cult in the Gāthās written by Amir Ahmadi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing the question of the origins of the Zoroastrian religion, this book argues that the intransigent opposition to the cult of the daēvas, the ancient Indo-Iranian gods, is the root of the development of the two central doctrines of Zoroastrianism: cosmic dualism and eschatology (fate of the soul after death and its passage to the other world). The daēva cult as it appears in the Gāthās, the oldest part of the Zoroastrian sacred text, the Avesta, had eschatological pretentions. The poet of the Gāthās condemns these as deception. The book critically examines various theories put forward since the 19th century to account for the condemnation of the daēvas. It then turns to the relevant Gāthic passages and analyzes them in detail in order to give a picture of the cult and the reasons for its repudiation. Finally, it examines materials from other sources, especially the Greek accounts of Iranian ritual lore (mainly) in the context of the mystery cults. Classical Greek writers consistently associate the nocturnal ceremony of the magi with the mysteries as belonging to the same religious-cultural category. This shows that Iranian religious lore included a nocturnal rite that aimed at ensuring the soul’s journey to the beyond and a desirable afterlife. Challenging the prevalent scholarship of the Greek interpretation of Iranian religious lore and proposing a new analysis of the formation of the Hellenistic concept of ‘magic,’ this book is an important resource for students and scholars of History, Religion and Iranian Studies.
