Most of the biological diversity in wetlands is found within resident invertebrate assemblages, and those invertebrates are the primary trophic link between lower plants and higher vertebrates (e.g. amphibians, fish, and birds). As such, most scientists, managers, consultants, and students who work in the world’s wetlands should become better informed about the invertebrate components in their habitats of interest. Our book serves to fill this need by assembling the world’s most prominent ecologists working on freshwater wetland invertebrates, and having them provide authoritative perspectives on each the world’s most important freshwater wetland types. The initial chapter of the book provides a primer on freshwater wetland invertebrates, including how they are uniquely adapted for life in wetland environments and how they contribute to important ecological functions in wetland ecosystems. These water-level fluctuations (WLF) have multiple effects on the organisms above and below the waterline. Natural WLF patterns in lakes guarantee both productivity and biodiversity, while untimely floods and droughts may have negative effects. Human impacts on WLF have led to a stabilization of the water levels of many lakes by hydraulic regulation, untimely drawdown due to water use, or floods due to water release from hydropower plants in the catchments. This book provides a first review in this field. It presents selected papers on the ecological effects of WLF in lakes, resulting from a workshop at the University of Konstanz in winter 2005. Issues addressed here include the extent of WLF, and analyses of their effects on different groups of biota from microorganisms to vertebrates. Applied issues include recommendations for the hydrological management of regulated lakes to reduce negative impacts, and a conceptual framework is delivered by an extension of the floodpulse concept for lakes. Current impacts on water use, including increasing demands on drinking and irrigation water, hydropower etc., and climate change effects on WLF make this book an essential resource for aquatic ecologists, engineers, and decision-makers dealing with the management of lake ecosystems and their catchments.

However, this protection generally does not encompass riparian areasâ€"the lands bordering rivers and lakesâ€"even though they often provide the same functions as wetlands. Growing recognition of the similarities in wetland and riparian area functioning and the differences in their legal protection led the NRC in 1999 to undertake a study of riparian areas, which has culminated in Riparian Areas: Functioning and Strategies for Management. The report is intended to heighten awareness of riparian areas commensurate with their ecological and societal values. The primary conclusion is that, because riparian areas perform a disproportionate number of biological and physical functions on a unit area basis, restoration of riparian functions along America's waterbodies should be a national goal.

Book excerpt: Indices have been developed using macrophytes and water quality parameters to detect the impact of anthropogenic disturbance on coastal wetlands of the Great Lakes, but such an index does not currently exist for Lake Simcoe. As wetland macrophytes are influenced by water quality, any impairment in wetland quality should be reflected by taxonomic composition, biomass and dynamics of the macrophyte community. This study investigates the potential use of macrophytes as a tool for monitoring water quality by examining the dynamics (species richness, density, diversity, and above-ground biomass) in emergent macrophyte communities in fringe wetlands around Lake Simcoe exposed to contrasting degrees of disturbance. Macrophytes and limnologic data were collected from six wetlands over four seasons from 2013 - 2014. The macrophytes were identified to species and limnologic data was quantified to reflect the water quality, which was measured as a proxy for site disturbance. Wetlands in this study correspond to a wide range of environmental conditions, ranging from very clear and nutrient poor oligotrophic conditions (e.g., TP =11.25 μg/L, TN = 345.25 μg/L, CHL a =1.37 mg·m-3) to turbid and eutrophic wetlands (e.g., TP = 47.25 μg/L, TN = 2285 μg/L, CHL a = 3.26 mg·m-3. Overall, the limnologic parameters indicated that water quality reflected the degree of anthropogenic degradation influencing the wetland. Taxonomic composition and population dynamics reflected the water quality. The least disturbed site was dominated by native Scirpus acutus and Scirpus pungens, which are mostly intolerant of environmental degradation, as well as the cosmopolitan Sparganium eurycarpum, found in all sites and tolerant of many different conditions. The moderately disturbed sites were dominated by both intolerant and tolerant species, including Scirpus acutus, Leersia oryzoides, Eleocharis smallii, Typha x glauca, Typha angustifolia, and Sparganium eurycarpum. The highly disturbed sites were also dominated by Sparganium eurycarpum, and species that are considered to be invasive, aggressive, and/or very tolerant of degradation, including Typha x glauca, Typha angustifolia, Phragmites australis, and Calamagrostis canadensis. These species are indicator species of wetland integrity and their relationship with the limnologic parameters as determined by ordination demonstrated responses that were consistent with the literature. Thus this study validates that macrophytes could be used as an indicator of water quality changes in this study area.

Book excerpt: Voyageurs National Park (VOYA) in northern Minnesota contains significant aquatic resources including 30 lakes and numerous wetlands. This synthesis contains an integrated account of what is known about the aquatic resources of VOYA; compares VOYA resources to those of other areas; and identifies opportunities and needs for future studies and surveys. Surveys and studies in VOYA have identified fifty-four fish species from 16 families 820 vascular plant species and 7 amphibian and 3 reptile species (higher numbers probably occur). Estimates of relative abundance for phyto- and zooplankton vary among VOYA lakes and depths surveyed. The VOYA fish populations and communities have been the most intensively studied. Twenty-eight percent of VOYA wetlands are the result of beaver activity. Mercury contamination and its food-chain bioaccumulation in VOYA are of particular concern. An integrated monitoring plan is needed in VOYA to provide continuous data and information on the complex physical chemical, and biological factors that influence aquatic systems. Resource managers in VOYA will use this information to understand and explain observed changes and to predict the potential for future changes.
