Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) process generally followed in federal cases is intended to determine and quantify injury and related damages resulting from a pollution event, such as an oil spill. This paper reviews and comments on the fundamental issues raised by recent NRDA experiences and suggests way in which the process can be significantly improved. The paper also reviews regulations developed by the Department of the Interior (DOI) and the draft regulation proposed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Because NRDA is in large part fundamentally a scientific inquiry, the paper addresses the current difficulties, complexities, and constraints in applying the scientific method to real-time pollution events such as oil spills. In addition, these pollution events, in particular large oil spills, generate enormous public scrutiny, creating great political pressures on natural resource trustees and those named as responsible for the spill in determining natural resource damages based on uncertain data. A workable and reasonable NRDA result requires careful use of available scientific theory and information, which is frequently incomplete. The potential for resolution of NRDAs raises difficult issues of the proper use of science in the context of the confrontational process of litigation. Unfortunately, the NRDA process raises the prospect of the improper use of science-especially where data are not available or are inconclusive or scientific theory is not clearly established-as a tool of selective advocacy serving one side or another rather than the dispassionate search for truth. Various options for preventing the misuse of science are presented. The authors conclude that if the focus of all participants in the NRDA is the efficient and equitable determination of injury, damage and restoration of the environment where possible, the potential for misuse of science is minimized"--Abstract.

Book Synopsis Studies in Consumer Demand — Econometric Methods Applied to Market Data by : Jeffrey A. Dubin
Download or read book Studies in Consumer Demand — Econometric Methods Applied to Market Data written by Jeffrey A. Dubin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in Consumer Demand - Econometric Methods Applied to Market Data contains eight previously unpublished studies of consumer demand. Each study stands on its own as a complete econometric analysis of demand for a well-defined consumer product. The econometric methods range from simple regression techniques applied in the first four chapters, to the use of logit and multinomial logit models used in chapters 5 and 6, to the use of nested logit models in chapters 6 and 7, and finally to the discrete/continuous modeling methods used in chapter 8. Emphasis is on applications rather than econometric theory. In each case, enough detail is provided for the reader to understand the purpose of the analysis, the availability and suitability of data, and the econometric approach to measuring demand.

Book Synopsis Evaluation of Environmental Data for Regulatory and Impact Assessment by : S. Ramamoorthy
Download or read book Evaluation of Environmental Data for Regulatory and Impact Assessment written by S. Ramamoorthy and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1991-01-14 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mounting concern for the state of the environment has led to a substantial increase in the collection of environmental data in the past two decades. This trend raises issues with regard to the quality assurance and quality control of the data gathering process, from sampling to analysis. The evaluation of environmental data in terms of quality, and relevance for use in the management of toxic chemicals in the enviroment, has reached a critical phase. An enormous volume of data is being generated, on both residue levels and their effects, to meet short- and long-term needs for regulatory procedures and (environmental) impact assessments. Therefore, it is important to verify not only the quality of the data collected, but also the choice of relevant test parameters. This volume deals with the evolution of analytical methodologies to the current state-of-the-art techniques, quality assurance/quality control of data acquirements, and testing procedures for screening of toxic chemicals - including their hazard identification, persistence, and fate processes in the environment. The models currently employed in environmental impact assessment and risk assessment are also discussed in detail. Public involvement and participation in regulatory decision-making processess is also described. It is intended for managers and scientists involved in environmental management and research of toxic chemicals in the environment.
Book Synopsis MANAGING NATURAL RESOURCES by : HARIKESH N. MISRA
Download or read book MANAGING NATURAL RESOURCES written by HARIKESH N. MISRA and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-03-13 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural resource management and sustainable development has, of late, assumed great importance, especially because of ecological crisis and environmental dangers which are looming large. Today the issues related to natural resource exploitation, consequences, their conservation, preservation and management leading to sustainable development have become the major thrust areas of teaching and research. Also, sustainability of natural resources, especially water and land resources, and their efficient use is one of the core programmes of Government of India’s Twelfth Five Year Plan (2012–2017) for strategic development; this objective can only be achieved if the resources are used judiciously. Although land and water resources—the focus of the present book—are vital for human survival and development, unfortunately both are under threat and are increasing strain worldwide. These resources have wide and significantly varying implications in rural and urban settlements, especially in India, where population has been continuously growing and, therefore, the demand of land and water is intensifying. This has necessitated urgent need for reviewing the availability of land and water resources and their conservation. Besides dealing with the theoretical aspects, this compendium presents case studies on natural resources as well, which reveal ground realities at micro and meso levels too. Pedagogical features like maps, diagrams, satellite imageries and latest database of the primary and secondary nature distinguish this book from other works on the subject. The book will be of immense use to postgraduate students and research scholars of geography and related disciplines such as rural–urban studies and environmental science. The thematic approach of the book provides reasonably good contents for cogitation to researchers. Policy makers, planners and academicians may also be benefitted while framing futuristic norms which may lead to sustainable development—the ultimate goal. AUDIENCE• Postgraduate students and Research Scholars of Geography.• Policy makers, Planners and Academicians
