By some of those kindly critics it was suggested that others outside that limited circle might be interested and amused by a record of experiences which fell to my lot while ranching in the Far West. Thus it comes to pass that I venture into print. Many of the incidents here set down have to do with hardships and bad weather. I hope that no reader will form an unfavourable opinion of Texas on that account. As a rule the climate of North-west Texas is one of the finest, brightest, and most exhilarating in the world. Hence it is with a sharp sense of contrast that one recalls the cruel pitiless "Northers" that occur several times almost every winter. When life goes smoothly under a smiling sun there is little to write about. It is the floods, blizzards, and storms that "make copy." I take this opportunity of acknowledging with thanks the courteous permission of the Editor of the "Wide World Magazine" to reprint an account of a stampede which appeared originally in that publication.
