Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography is the first-ever telling of the compelling story of a remarkable woman and pianist. Adele aus der Ohe was born and raised in Germany. She played her orchestral debut at the age of ten and became a student of Franz Liszt at the age of twelve. She arrived in America young and unknown, was an immediate success, and quickly became one of the most sought-after artists of her day. She toured from St. Petersburg, Russia, to San Francisco, and California. She was a favorite of the Boston Symphony and performed with this venerable organization an astonishing fifty-one times. When Carnegie Hall was dedicated, the finest musicians of the day were engaged Tchaikovsky to conduct and aus der Ohe to solo. She became a friend of Tchaikovsky and he invited her to St. Petersburg to perform his Piano Concerto in B-flat minor at the same concert that featured the premier of his Pathetique Symphony, which turned out to be Tchaikovsky's final performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carnegie Hall is recognized worldwide, associated with the heights of artistic achievement and a multitude of famous performers. Yet its beginnings are not so well known. In 1887, a chance encounter on a steamship bound for Europe brought young conductor Walter Damrosch together with millionaire philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and his new wife, Louise. Their subsequent friendship led to the building of this groundbreaking concert space. This book provides the first comprehensive account of the conception and building of Carnegie Hall, which culminated in a five-day opening festival in May 1891, featuring spectacular music, a host of performers and Tchaikovsky as a special guest conductor.

Download or read book Tchaikovsky written by Roland John Wiley and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A giant in the pantheon of 19th century composers, Tchaikovsky continues to enthrall audiences today. From the Nutcracker--arguably the most popular ballet currently on the boards--Swan Lake, and Sleeping Beauty, to Eugene Onegin and Pique Dame, to the Symphony Pathetique and the always rousing, canon-blasting 1812 Overture--this prolific and beloved composer's works are perennial favorites. Now, John Wiley, a renowned Tchaikovsky scholar, provides a fresh biography aimed in classic Master Musicians style at the student and music lover. Wiley deftly draws on documents from imperial, Soviet, and post-Soviet era sources, providing a more balanced look at recent controversies surrounding the marriage, death, and sexuality of the composer. The author dovetails the biographical material with separate chapters that treat the music thoroughly and fully, work-by-work, with more substantial explorations of Tchaikovsky's most familiar compositions. These analyses present new, even iconoclastic perspectives on the music and the composer's intent and expression. Several informative appendices, in the Master Musicians format, include an exhaustive list of works and bibliography.
