This book is about the latter. Australia's favourite sport has a proud history of turning nobodies into somebodies and ordinary men and women into heroes of international renown. From the black-and-white belligerence of Ian Chappell to the colourful celebrity of Shane Warne, the diplomacy of Adam Gilchrist to the ruthlessness of Meg Lanning, the pantheon of Australia's greatest cricketers is as mottled as the crowds that cheer them on. But who is the greatest of them all? In The 50 Greatest Australian Cricketers, sports journalist and comedy writer Dan Liebke relives the careers, characteristics and enduring legacies of the finest Australian cricket players of the past 50 years.

Book excerpt: THE WISDEN BOOK OF THE YEAR and THE CROSS SPORTS BOOK AWARDS CRICKET BOOK OF THE YEAR. 'The most complete, best researched, roses-and-thorns history of cricket in Pakistan' Independent 'As good as it's likely to get' Guardian The nation of Pakistan was born out of the trauma of Partition from India in 1947. Its cricket team evolved in the chaotic aftermath. Initially unrecognised, underfunded and weak, Pakistan's team grew to become a major force in world cricket. Since the early days of the Raj, cricket has been entwined with national identity and Pakistan's successes helped to define its status in the world. Defiant in defence, irresistible in attack, players such as A.H.Kardar, Fazal Mahmood, Wasim Akram and Imran Khan awed their contemporaries and inspired their successors. The story of Pakistan cricket is filled with triumph and tragedy. In recent years, it has been threatened by the same problems affecting Pakistan itself: fallout from the 'war on terror', sectarian violence, corruption, crises in health and education, and a shortage of effective leaders. For twenty years, Pakistan cricket has been stained by the scandalous behaviour of the players involved in match-fixing. After 2009, the fear of violence drove Pakistan's international cricket into exile. But Peter Oborne's narrative is also full of hope. For all its troubles, cricket gives all Pakistanis a chance to excel and express themselves, a sense of identity and a cause for pride in their country. Packed with first-hand recollections, and digging deep into political, social and cultural history, Wounded Tiger is a major study of sport and nationhood.

At that meeting Sandy indicated that it was important for all teams and team members to continue to look to improve in all they do. Later I was fortunate to attend a Junior Cricket meeting where Mike Hussey spoke. Mike indicated that Sandy Gordon had impressed on the West Australian Team there was a genuine need for all to work together as a team. Sandy had suggested to Mike that he and the team needed to remember the following acronym: Together Each Achieve More The WISE quickly understand that there is a genuine need for all to continue to work to improve in all that is done. The WISE also better understand that so much more can be achieved when all in a TEAM work together. Over many centuries of human existence, the WISE have used these important ideals to achieve unbelievable and sustained SUCCESS. Many examples of these outstanding achievements have been included to provide impetus for the reader to apply WISDOM in all that is done.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of this book reflects a time in my life when I was surrounded by death and the possibility of not making the return journey home from combat in Iraq in 2005–2006. I felt a deep obligation to tell my two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Chrisraine, about the boy that I was and the soldier that I became should I not make it back home to tell her in person. This book chronicles my childhood beginning with my first indelible memory at age four, describing the people, places, and events that molded me into the man and soldier that I became until my son, Christophe, turned four years old. Valley of the Shadow was an easy choice as the title for me because of the biblical and literal connection to me as I experienced combat and lived in a space and time defined by death and the will to overcome that fear. That shadow was ever present, and I fought hard and willed myself not to be engulfed by it. I was much more to my family than a soldier, and I wanted my daughter to know the boy that I was and what made me into the soldier that I became. This journey was filled with periods of joy and great happiness as well as uncertainty and sadness as a boy and much the same as a soldier. I excelled at the things that I applied myself to but was always challenged to perform in order to continue receiving the pleasures of everyday life or to survive a day in combat. So both my childhood and my profession were valleys oftentimes reflecting low points and high points with a sense of duty to survive and overcome the day at hand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 50 years of passionate involvement in cricket; extensive effort to constantly understand and improve what I do; insightful exploration of such things as ancient Chinese and Japanese texts as well as modern psychology concepts, I have developed my own philosophies and ways of doing things in cricket. Many of these ways are unique to me and opposite to conventional instruction. Whilst my hearing, memory and physical condition are all in decline, the satisfaction gained from understanding what motivates and can improve an individual remains a major source of inspiration. Often I have observed people with extraordinary talent give up just short of what they could achieve, yet others with less talent, but with an indomitable spirit continue on and reap the rewards of success. Why does this happen? We simply have not been educated in how to harness and use our thinking minds wisely. The result is that our efforts in life are often hit or miss. Importantly the WISDOM contained in my book, can help my readers better identify, connect with and meet the challenges that their involvement in cricket will bring.

Book excerpt: From his cricket debuts in 2007 and 2013 respectively, Rohit Gurunath Sharma has grown to be one of the vital pillars of the Indian cricket team. A modern-day entertainer who refused to compromise his approach to batting, his contribution to India's domination in one-day cricket and victories in the Premier League is indisputable. This is the story of his journey, of the years of hard work and the confidence that has allowed him to keep his place in the team--and his amazing capacity to come up with big scores. His combination of aggression and caution, his lazy elegance and his deadly shots have brought a whiff of fresh air to the cricket field. The Hitman is the riveting account of a batsman, who has always chosen to play on his own terms, from two of India's best-known cricket writers, Vijay Lokapally and G. Krishnan.

A religious man and a ruthless on-field sledger. A brutal enforcer, and a soft-hearted family man. Australian record-holder for highest score in Tests and One Day Internationals, who was at times troubled by self-doubt and doubters. In Standing My Ground Hayden confronts these contradictions head-on. He talks frankly about the forces that shaped his journey from fringe international to a giant of the game, and takes us on a privileged tour inside the sporting machine that dominated all comers in a golden age of Australian cricket. This isn't a predictable ball-by-ball account of a stellar career. Instead, Hayden delivers a characteristically direct assessment of the matches and the people that mattered most. He opens up on umpires, the media, superstitions, teammates and opponents with disarming honesty and humour. The country boy from Kingaroy rose to greatness in the cricket world. Here is the superstar batsman, the surfer, fisherman and chef in a book as bold and powerful as the man himself.
