Book excerpt: This is a study of love, specifically of men’s and women’s emotional roles vis-à-vis one another in Northeast Brazil; of how people form conjugal relationships in this region; and of the impact of rapid socioeconomic change on courtship, marriage, cohabitation, and infidelity. Rapid urbanization and expansion of the cash economy have transformed the region in a few decades. Among the transformations are shifts in how people conduct courtship, form marriages, view the proprieties of sexual behavior, and assess the proper social and economic roles of men and women. These changes have altered the relative importance of physical, economic, and emotional intimacy in conjugal relationships, transforming the nature of marriage—once defined as a largely economic relationship—into a largely emotional relationship, as ideas of romance once associated with infidelity, concubinage, and courtship are increasingly attached to marriage. The book is largely based on interviews with men and women who talked about their often complicated love lives with wit and passion, and the book is rich in personal stories and quotations. Women were asked to discuss the nature of men and women, and men were asked to talk about women. Both sexes were questioned about their views on prostitution, concubinage, and promiscuity, as well as their definitions of love. Parents were asked for their views about marriage and child rearing (especially differences in raising boys and girls), their relations with their own parents, lovers, spouses, and friends, and their views on virginity and sexual propriety. The bluntness and articulateness of the informants about their motivations and experiences not only demonstrated that men and women viewed conjugal relationships very differently but enabled the author to specify and explore these differences in unusually interesting ways.

Book excerpt: The beloved #1 New York Times bestselling author and “master of the craft of storytelling” (Associated Press) weaves a spellbinding tale of a mother’s tragic loss and one man’s chance at salvation. One moment June Nealon is happily looking forward to years of love and laughter with her family. The next, she is facing a future as empty as her heart as she waits for a miracle. For Shay Bourne, life has no more surprises, and he has nothing to offer the world. In a heartbeat, though, his life is changed by one last chance for redemption through June’s young daughter, Claire. But between June and Shay lies an ocean of bitter regrets and a mother’s rage. Would you give up revenge against someone you hate if it meant saving someone you love? Would you want your dreams to come true if it meant granting your enemy’s dying wish? Soul-stirring and haunting, Change of Heart is “another ripped-from-the-zeitgeist winner” (Publishers Weekly) from Jodi Picoult.

This neighbor, eighteen-year-old Arthur Greeves, was reading a book titled Myths of the Norsemen. Their meeting was a spark that would fan into a flame a friendship that lasted almost fifty years. Drawing on original research of the 296 letters written by Lewis to Greeves that span the life of their friendship, readers will explore the deep, emotional, and raw relationship of two dissimilar people where each unveiled himself to the other in ways they did with no one else. Embedded in this relationship is the trajectory of Lewis’s faith journey, starting out as an arrogant skeptic and transforming into the greatest apologist of the last one hundred years. Readers will be drawn into this beautiful friendship and in turn become better friends to those around them.

Book excerpt: Charles DaSilva is an exceptional man, I had the privilege to spend a decade of my life around his presence and learned a lot about life, growth, awareness and strongly self evaluation. His caring heart and selflessness makes him a stellar being and one that you can learn and grow from. What makes Charles DaSilva forward thinking is his attitude to embrace the challenges of life by using the tools he has learned over his lifetime which makes him aware to adapt to the challenges and come out of it victorious. When Charles told me his idea for the book, without a doubt in my mind I knew that it was possible, he would show me the transcripts of years of writing and I would stare in amazement because this was his destiny from years before and now to see this vision to come to light is nothing short of Gods calling for Charles DaSilva to share his wisdom for all to learn and grow in the direction they've been destined to be. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Unknown And The Unknowable is the sequel to my debut book Our Universe An Unending Mystery published by Create Space, an Amazon Company in 2017. In the earlier book, knowledge frontier areas in the physical, spiritual, and occult worlds were identified and their interdependence was highlighted. The present book extends the thought process further into exciting arcane domains like time travel and wormholes in the physical world, religion-the eternal dilemma and the interpretation of dreams in the spiritual and occult worlds respectively. Aside from this, two new areas; The human life form and math conundrums have been added to make the review more comprehensive and interesting. The unique panorama of the human life form from womb to tomb is sketched with notes on the mysterious workings of major organs and glands. Unique human capabilities like the third eye, the use of languages for communication, proprioception, the reality or otherwise of free will and other abstract topics have been evaluated. The math conundrums have been cherry-picked: e.g. the zero discovery and the Ramanujan Magic Square make interesting reading. The book would be a useful addition to libraries wishing to highlight abstract topics.

Book excerpt: A deluxe edition of Bolano’s complete poetry Perhaps surprisingly to some of his fiction fans, Roberto Bolano touted poetry as the superior art form, able to approach an infinity in which “you become infinitely small without disappearing.” When asked, “What makes you believe you’re a better poet than a novelist?” Bolano replied, “The poetry makes me blush less.” The sum of his life’s work in his preferred medium, The Unknown University is a showcase of Bolano’s gift for freely crossing genres, with poems written in prose, stories in verse, and flashes of writing that can hardly be categorized. “Poetry,” he believed, “is braver than anyone.”

Book excerpt: “Sam Lightner, Jr., combines two tales of adventure, one historic and the other modern-day in his page-turner . . . With its rich sense of place and history, All Elevations Unknown offers a surprisingly fresh twist to an adventure-climbing tale.” –Climbing Magazine In the spring of 1999, armed with little more than a description from a book and a map labeled “all elevations unknown,” Sam Lightner and his German rock-climbing buddy, Volker, found themselves deep in the jungles of Borneo on a mission to climb a mountain that was only rumored to exist. What little they knew about the mountain they had learned from the memoirs of Major Tom Harrisson, a British World War II soldier who in 1945 had been assigned the near-impossible mission of parachuting blindly into the thick Borneo rainforest–where the natives had a grisly habit of cutting off heads–to try to reclaim the island for the Allies. A captivating, utterly original combination of travel adventure memoir and historical re-creation, All Elevations Unknown charts Lightner’s exhilarating and at times harrowing quest to ascend the mountain Batu Lawi in the face of leeches, vipers, and sweat bees, and to keep his team together in one of the earth’s most treacherous uncharted pockets. Along the way, he reconstructs a fascinating historical narrative that chronicles Tom Harrisson’s adventures there during the war and illuminates an astonishing piece of forgotten World War II history. Rife with suspense and vivid detail, the two intertwining tales open up the island of Borneo, its people, and its history in a powerful, unforgettable way, taking adventure writing to new heights.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book Finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award A personal, lyrical narrative about storytelling and empathy, from the author of Orwell's Roses Apricots. Her mother's disintegrating memory. An invitation to Iceland. Illness. These are Rebecca Solnit's raw materials, but The Faraway Nearby goes beyond her own life, as she spirals out into the stories she heard and read—from fairy tales to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein—that helped her navigate her difficult passge. Solnit takes us into the lives of others—an arctic cannibal, the young Che Guevara among the leprosy afflicted, a blues musician, an Icelandic artist and her labyrinth—to understand warmth and coldness, kindness and imagination, decay and transformation, making art and making self. This captivating, exquisitely written exploration of the forces that connect us and the way we tell our stories is a tour de force of association, a marvelous Russian doll of a book that is a fitting companion to Solnit's much-loved A Field Guide to Getting Lost.
