Book excerpt: In a bicentennial history of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, William D. Snider leads us from the chartering and siting of a charming campus and village in 1795 through the struggles, innovations, and expansions that have carried the school to national and international prominence. Throughout, Snider provides fine portraits of individuals significant in the life of the university, from William R. Davie and Joseph Caldwell to Harry Woodburn Chase, Frank Porter Graham, and William C. Friday. His book evokes for all who have been part of the Chapel Hill community memories of their own associations with the campus and a sense of the greater history of the institution of which they were a part.

This book was released on 2022-03-10 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Lindley S. Butler traverses oft-noted but little understood events in the political and social establishment of the Carolina colony. In the wake of the English Civil Wars in the mid-seventeenth century, King Charles II granted charters to eight Lords Proprietors to establish civil structures, levy duties and taxes, and develop a vast tract of land along the southeastern Atlantic coast. Butler argues that unlike the New England theocracies and Chesapeake plantocracy, the isolated colonial settlements of the Albemarle—the cradle of today's North Carolina—saw their power originate neither in the authority of the church nor in wealth extracted through slave labor, but rather in institutions that emphasized political, legal, and religious freedom for white male landholders. Despite this distinct pattern of economic, legal, and religious development, however, the colony could not avoid conflict among the diverse assemblage of Indigenous, European, and African people living there, all of whom contributed to the future of the state and nation that took shape in subsequent years. Butler provides the first comprehensive history of the proprietary era in North Carolina since the nineteenth century, offering a substantial and accessible reappraisal of this key historical period.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of North Carolina Record, Vol. 65: August, 1908; Self-Help at the University I came to Chapel Hill with It took most of this to pay my entrance fees, room rent for the first month, and buy books that I needed in my college courses. I secured a position as waiter at Commons and in this way paid my board. I found it necessary to be absent from the University during November in order to deliver fruit trees which I had sold during the summer. I returned on December 1st and by hard work managed to pass all my examinations. During the summer vaca tion I again sold fruit trees, thus making it necessary to be absent two or three weeks each fall in order to deliver the trees. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North Carolina State University opened as a land grant institution in 1889. Born out of debate and indecision, it was established as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts—the college of the common man. There was indifference and resistance from the educated about the usefulness of a program for the sons of farmers and mechanics with a curriculum of “useful and practical arts.” Within three decades, the school surpassed all expectations in its contributions to the state's economy. In 2000, NC State was the largest educational facility in North Carolina and had outgrown its early derogatory epithets. This work passes the formality and function of the brick and mortar of buildings and gets to the heart of the students, alumni, and educational community. It is truly a celebration of possibilities and dedication and a tribute to the history of North Carolina State University and the citizens of North Carolina.

Book excerpt: For years, American states have tinkered with the machinery of death, seeking to align capital punishment with evolving social standards and public will. Against this backdrop, North Carolina had long stood out as a prolific executioner with harsh mandatory sentencing statutes. But as the state sought to remake its image as modern and business-progressive in the early twentieth century, the question of execution preoccupied lawmakers, reformers, and state boosters alike. In this book, Seth Kotch recounts the history of the death penalty in North Carolina from its colonial origins to the present. He tracks the attempts to reform and sanitize the administration of death in a state as dedicated to its image as it was to rigid racial hierarchies. Through this lens, Lethal State helps explain not only Americans' deep and growing uncertainty about the death penalty but also their commitment to it. Kotch argues that Jim Crow justice continued to reign in the guise of a modernizing, orderly state and offers essential insight into the relationship between race, violence, and power in North Carolina. The history of capital punishment in North Carolina, as in other states wrestling with similar issues, emerges as one of state-building through lethal punishment.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of North Carolina Record: November, 1910 While the period covered by this Record is from 1795 to 1910 it must be borne in mind that the first seventy years, or until 1865, was a time of great dearth in such research and publica tion all over the country. Few men were trained for it and student laboratories were unknown. Then followed for this institution a period of grave depression with eventual closing of the doors. The University was reopened in 1875, almost without equipment and having only a scanty income. It is noteworthy that any. Sort of research was undertaken by the. Members of the faculty under such conditions of inadequate laboratories and overwork. These conditions have improved and with them the amount and character of the work. It is hoped. That the future will see still greater activity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
