Book Synopsis The Unity of Consciousness by : Tim Bayne
Download or read book The Unity of Consciousness written by Tim Bayne and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-04 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Unity of Consciousness Tim Bayne draws on philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience in defence of the claim that consciousness is unified. In the first part of the book Bayne develops an account of what it means to say that consciousness is unified. Part II applies this account to a variety of cases - drawn from both normal and pathological forms of experience - in which the unity of consciousness is said to break down. Bayne argues that the unity of consciousness remains intact in each of these cases. Part III explores the implications of the unity of consciousness for theories of consciousness, for the sense of embodiment, and for accounts of the self. In one of the most comprehensive examinations of the topic available, The Unity of Consciousness draws on a wide range of findings within philosophy and the sciences of the mind to construct an account of the unity of consciousness that is both conceptually sophisticated and scientifically informed.

Download or read book Consilience written by E. O. Wilson and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2014-11-26 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • "A dazzling journey across the sciences and humanities in search of deep laws to unite them." —The Wall Street Journal One of our greatest scientists—and the winner of two Pulitzer Prizes for On Human Nature and The Ants—gives us a work of visionary importance that may be the crowning achievement of his career. In Consilience (a word that originally meant "jumping together"), Edward O. Wilson renews the Enlightenment's search for a unified theory of knowledge in disciplines that range from physics to biology, the social sciences and the humanities. Using the natural sciences as his model, Wilson forges dramatic links between fields. He explores the chemistry of the mind and the genetic bases of culture. He postulates the biological principles underlying works of art from cave-drawings to Lolita. Presenting the latest findings in prose of wonderful clarity and oratorical eloquence, and synthesizing it into a dazzling whole, Consilience is science in the path-clearing traditions of Newton, Einstein, and Richard Feynman.

Download or read book The Unity of Natural Phenomena written by M. Emile Saigey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unity of Natural Phenomena: A Popular Introduction to the Study of the Forces of Nature Since the discovery of the laws of gravity, more than two hundred years ago, no scientific achievement has been so fruitful in results as the determination of the mechanical equivalent of heat. In 1842 Dr. Mayer, of Heilbronn, in Swabia, demonstrated that the blow of a hammer weighing four hundred and twenty-four kilograms upon an anvil, with the velocity it has acquired by falling through a distance of one metre, produces an elevation of temperature equal to one degree centigrade. This experiment has wrought a marvellous change in all our conceptions of Matter and Force, and still gives promise of results which the imagination fails to grasp. It is now considered as demonstrated that heat, electricity, light, magnetism, chemical attraction, muscular energy, and mechanical work, all are but exhibitions of one and the same power acting through matter. Book Synopsis Designed for More by : Lucas Ramirez
Download or read book Designed for More written by Lucas Ramirez and published by FaithWords. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for More calls every Christian to consider how, through collective movement, they can bring about Christ's daring vision for unity in the Church to impact the world like never before. Our world is divided and fragmented. Even among followers of Christ, God's great story of reconciliation has been crippled because the messengers of that story are unreconciled. But God designed us for so much more. Thankfully, He has hidden incredible lessons in nature to help solve complex human problems. Designed for More draws groundbreaking implications for how to achieve unity and collective movement through new research on a jaw-dropping phenomenon of flocking starlings known as a murmuration. This marvel is one of nature's most spectacular sights: Imagine hundreds of thousands of birds in motion, caressing the sky like a brush on canvas. It is a beautiful madness that is completely ordered. Join authors Lucas Ramirez and Mike DeVito as they unveil the power of the murmuration principles in order to inspire unity in individuals and the Church as a whole. Birds first taught us to fly, and now they will teach us to unify!

Book Synopsis Unity of Science by : Tuomas E. Tahko
Download or read book Unity of Science written by Tuomas E. Tahko and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-11 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unity of science was once a very popular idea among both philosophers and scientists. But it has fallen out of fashion, largely because of its association with reductionism and the challenge from multiple realisation. Pluralism and the disunity of science are the new norm, and higher-level natural kinds and special science laws are considered to have an important role in scientific practice. What kind of reductionism does multiple realisability challenge? What does it take to reduce one phenomenon to another? How do we determine which kinds are natural? What is the ontological basis of unity? In this Element, Tuomas Tahko examines these questions from a contemporary perspective, after a historical overview. The upshot is that there is still value in the idea of a unity of science. We can combine a modest sense of unity with pluralism and give an ontological analysis of unity in terms of natural kind monism. This title is available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
