Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States in the Twentieth Century It is always venturesome to present to the people of a country a book on that country written by a foreigner, and it is particularly so when the country in question is the United States, where political, economic and social conditions differ so greatly from those obtaining in Europe. I trust, however, that the reader who may be disposed to regard such a work as presumptuous will bear in mind that the present book is based on a study of American documents, that it is a book dealing with facts, and, as was said in, the preface to the French edition, that it is primarily an inventory of the economic resources of the United States at the beginning of the twentieth century. All the facts and figures cited are taken from the "Report on the Twelfth Census" and from other authoritative official and private American publications, and thus possess strong guarantees of trustworthiness. But it must be admitted that everything changes and grows so quickly in America that, brief as is the time which has elapsed since the book was written, some of the statistics presented do not exactly correspond to the state of affairs today. Nor is the author unaware that complete exactitude would in any event be out of the question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Americanization of the World: Or the Trend of the Twentieth Century The Americanization of the world is a phrase which excites, quite needlessly, some resentment in Great Britain. It is even regarded as an affront to England to suggest that the world is being Americanized. Its true destiny of course is to be Anglicized. And many are quick to discern something of anti-patriotic bias in the writers who venture to call attention to the trend of the Twentieth Century. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Call of the Twentieth Century These addresses were well received. They were carefully prepared. They contain thoughts to which I desire to give a wider circulation. I believe them an important incentive to the unfolding human Consciousness and Conscience. I have the faith that all the members of the Federation who so kindly elected me its President, and New Thought people generally, will be glad to see them in this form. As an evidence of the Love I bear to, and the appreciation I have for, the Federation and the Principle for which it stands, and because of the importance which I think it has in the development of the race, I dedicate to it this little volume. Future years will show the great good that this body of men and women, who meet in Love and Truth to inspire, encourage and assist each other, are doing. The New Thought is the one movement for which all past movements have been. It is doing much by the mere Suggestion of its existence, but still greater is the good it is unconsciously doing by the most potent power of the Thought it radiates and the Love which inspires its Thought. Trusting the All-Good to make these addresses important factors in swelling the "Call" and in hastening the "Emancipation," I add them lovingly to the great trend of public sentiment that is now so increasing that its argosies of Thought fill every sea of literature, bearing treasures richer than the silks of the Orient or the pearls of India. In Truth and Love I desire this Emancipation for you all. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sweeping history of twentieth-century America follows the changing and often conflicting ideas about the fundamental nature of American society: Is the United States a social melting pot, as our civic creed warrants, or is full citizenship somehow reserved for those who are white and of the "right" ancestry? Gary Gerstle traces the forces of civic and racial nationalism, arguing that both profoundly shaped our society. After Theodore Roosevelt led his Rough Riders to victory during the Spanish American War, he boasted of the diversity of his men's origins- from the Kentucky backwoods to the Irish, Italian, and Jewish neighborhoods of northeastern cities. Roosevelt’s vision of a hybrid and superior “American race,” strengthened by war, would inspire the social, diplomatic, and economic policies of American liberals for decades. And yet, for all of its appeal to the civic principles of inclusion, this liberal legacy was grounded in “Anglo-Saxon” culture, making it difficult in particular for Jews and Italians and especially for Asians and African Americans to gain acceptance. Gerstle weaves a compelling story of events, institutions, and ideas that played on perceptions of ethnic/racial difference, from the world wars and the labor movement to the New Deal and Hollywood to the Cold War and the civil rights movement. We witness the remnants of racial thinking among such liberals as FDR and LBJ; we see how Italians and Jews from Frank Capra to the creators of Superman perpetuated the New Deal philosophy while suppressing their own ethnicity; we feel the frustrations of African-American servicemen denied the opportunity to fight for their country and the moral outrage of more recent black activists, including Martin Luther King, Jr., Fannie Lou Hamer, and Malcolm X. Gerstle argues that the civil rights movement and Vietnam broke the liberal nation apart, and his analysis of this upheaval leads him to assess Reagan’s and Clinton’s attempts to resurrect nationalism. Can the United States ever live up to its civic creed? For anyone who views racism as an aberration from the liberal premises of the republic, this book is must reading. Containing a new chapter that reconstructs and dissects the major struggles over race and nation in an era defined by the War on Terror and by the presidency of Barack Obama, American Crucible is a must-read for anyone who views racism as an aberration from the liberal premises of the republic.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Facing the Twentieth Century: Our Country; Its Power and Peril The Republic, with the momentum secured in making more than a century of glorious history, is about to move into the twentieth century and work out its manifest destiny in extending civil and religious liberty to the millions which come under its benign rule. Without attempting an elaborate discussion of any one of the themes here considered, I have essayed to give a brief survey of the sources of our civilization, of the institutions which conserve and promote this civilization; of the peril which menaces these institutions, and of the legal, organic, and moral forces which may be depended upon to protect them.
