Book excerpt: As Americans rediscover their connection to food, some of our most treasured family recipes are making their way back to the table. These are not recipes that you can find in any standard cookbook. These recipes have been passed down from generation to generation, picking up the unique touch of each family member that has made them. Traditionally, these recipes are hard to come by. Only the most trusted friends and relatives are privy to them. To find these treasured morsels, The Church Supper Cookbook went straight to the local legends of community cooking: America's small-town cooks. We asked nicely (pleaded in some cases!) and were graced with the good fortune of more than 375 delicious, time-honored dishes from our country's best cooks. The Church Supper Cookbook is meant for home cooks who appreciate the value of the hard-to-find recipe served by a neighbor at a potluck or brought to a holiday gathering by a family member. Book Synopsis The United Church of Christ in the Shenandoah Valley by : H. B. Cavalcanti
Download or read book The United Church of Christ in the Shenandoah Valley written by H. B. Cavalcanti and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2010-08-20 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While congregational studies have expanded our understanding of American religion, little is known about the local practices of a single denomination at its smallest jurisdiction. This book explores how national denominational commitments are affecting the practices of local United Church of Christ congregations inside a single association in the Shenandoah Valley. Nationally, the UCC defines itself as a united and uniting church in its ecumenical work; as multiracial and multicultural in its diversity; as accessible to all in welcoming those with disabilities; as open and affirming for its LGBT members; and as a just peace church in its support of social justice. So, how fully have local congregations embraced these commitments? Might congregations be more attached to their older identities, particularly in areas where the church's predecessors were strongly rooted? Or are the national church's commitments being lived out at the grassroots level? The book measures congregational life in one of the UCC's oldest and smallest associations. Books on congregational studies either focus on a case study of a particular congregation, or large-scale surveys of U.S. congregations that explore aggregate data to explain their work. This book looks instead at a group of local congregations inside a small judicatory (the Shenandoah Association) of the United Church of Christ to explain religious life at the grassroots level.
Book Synopsis Should We Use Someone Else's Sermon? by : Scott M. Gibson
Download or read book Should We Use Someone Else's Sermon? written by Scott M. Gibson and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With easy access to sermons on the Internet, plus pressure to deliver the next sermon with little time to prepare, no wonder some pastors have resorted to plagiarizing other people’s sermons, passing them off as their own. This growing epidemic has received coverage in the Wall Street Journal, on National Public Radio, and elsewhere. Some pastors have been caught in the act and dismissed from their churches. Is this fair? Is this stealing? How can you recognize it? How can it be prevented? This book not only helps explain the problem, but it also explores the ethical implications and gives advice on how to avoid it or deal with it if the problem surfaces in your church. It includes study questions at the end of chapters and a concluding case study.

A student researcher may copy and paste some content or facts between files, and forget to rephrase the information. A simple oversight can have far-reaching, legal ramifications in today's world that sends messages to the world within seconds. This volume helps readers understand and navigate through the issues relating to plagiarism. Is plagiarism the same as copyright violation? Is the surge in plagiarism the result of a growing, dishonest society? Will emphasizing personal integrity prevent plagiarism? These questions and others are answered through this collection of compelling essays.

Book Synopsis The Freedom Quilting Bee by : Nancy Callahan
Download or read book The Freedom Quilting Bee written by Nancy Callahan and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2005-04-17 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original book on the renowned Freedom quilters of Gee's Bend In December of 1965, the year of the Selma-to-Montgomery march, a white Episcopal priest driving through a desperately poor, primarily black section of Wilcox County found himself at a great bend of the Alabama River. He noticed a cabin clothesline from which were hanging three magnificent quilts unlike any he had ever seen. They were of strong, bold colors in original, op-art patterns—the same art style then fashionable in New York City and other cultural centers. An idea was born and within weeks took on life, in the form of the Freedom Quilting Bee, a handcraft cooperative of black women artisans who would become acclaimed throughout the nation.
