Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Unicorn: A Mythological Investigation is a charming 19th-century look at one of the most beautiful, magical, and mysterious mystical creatures to have been researched: the unicorn. Part cryptozoology booklet and part history lesson, The Unicorn explores the history of the unicorn in mythology and art, compares the unicorn to other mythological and common creatures, such as the Medusa and the lion, studies the relationship between the unicorn and the moon, and offers opinions as to the terrestrial existence of unicorns. Part of the Loren Coleman Presents series for Cosimo Classics, The Unicorn is an exciting, interesting read for anyone interested in mythology, cryptozoology, and history. ROBERT BROWN, JR. (1844-1912) was an English Solicitor in Barton-on-Humber, as well as a locally-known writer on archaic religion, mythology, and astronomy. He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, a Member of the Society of Biblical Archaeology, and a Member of the Royal Astronomical Society, demonstrating an interest in nontraditional subjects. His many books include titles such as Poseidon: a Link between Semite, Hamite, and Aryan (1872); The Religion of Zoroaster, Considered in Connection with Archaic Monotheism (1879); The Law of Kosmic Order (1882); and The Myth of Kirke (1883). Brown lived his entire adult life at Priestgate House, Barton-on-Humber, and died at the age of 68 years in 1912. A short obituary appeared in Nature, Vol. 90, 1913, pp. 227; and in the Annual Register, 1913, p. 123.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Unicorn: A Mythological Investigation was first published in 1881. It covers some of the same ground as the more popularly oriented Lore of the Unicorn, by Odell Shepard, before it ventures into comparative mythology. The present volume was written in the late 19th century at a time when all mythological and folklore narratives were believed to be astronomical metaphors. Brown sees the Unicorn as a lunar symbol, and draws on mythology from a wide range of sources to make his case, from Northern European to Vedic and Zoroastrian.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of the Magical Mythical Unicorn is an anthology of esoteric knowledge, myths, and legends about the most magical of beasts: the mythical unicorn. Utilizing a global lens, the authors delve into the critical importance of the timeless unicorn across multiple cultures and spiritual traditions to display the transformative energy of the creature and its larger effect on humanity’s consciousness. No other mythological creature is enjoying as rapid an ascent into the public eye and consciousness as the magical unicorn. The unicorn is now a fixture in contemporary pop culture. This book explores a diverse assortment of tales about the unicorn, ranging from its presence in the Garden of Eden, its foretelling of the births of Confucius and the Buddha, its protection of India from the wrath of Genghis Khan’s army, and its depiction within heraldry, including in the Scottish and British thrones. It features in-depth sections on the use of the unicorn’s horn for detecting poisons and healing, the horn’s connection to the opening of the third eye, and the unicorn’s depictions in ancient Sumeria, Egypt, and many other early civilizations.

Book excerpt: A rare grimoire of lunar folklore, myth, and legend, Moon Lore explores the cultural and historical significance of the Moon, offering astronomical, spiritual, and astrological insight. 'Soon as the evening shades prevail, The Moon takes up the wondrous tale.' —Addison, Ode, 1712 A masterpiece of storytelling, Moon Lore brings Timothy Harley's rigorous academic research to life in a collection of myths surrounding the lunar phases, deities, and eclipses. Harley details the anthropology of the Moon's worship and the agricultural rituals tailored to her cycles. In an exploration of our celestial neighbour's influence on our tides and emotions, as well as the evolution of our scientific knowledge, Moon Lore is an ode to humanity's enduring fascination with the Moon. First published in 1885, this Wyrd Books edition features the original black-and-white illustrations throughout, with a new introduction and William Wordsworth's 1837 lyrical poem 'To the Moon'. Moon Lore is the perfect grimoire for those seeking a little lunar magic and is not to be missed by astrology and astronomy lovers alike.
