They also hold a catatonic man in a fluid filled tube. Doctors Lisa Lucas and Marjorie Houston have the monotonous job of babysitting the man in the tube. When the man awakes, they find there is more to him than Scilymax cares to admit. They begin to unravel the mystery of the man in the tube with the help of their friend and theologian Michelle Bonds. When their captive escapes, the trio are thrust into a worldwide manhunt and soon they realize they have unwittingly gone from being hunters to prey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consider My Servant moves between a destitute Ukrainian village and the glittering opulence of St. Petersburg, Russia of the 1880's. It's a book about private fears, anger and love. It's a book about duplicity, murder, conspiracy and passion. Jonah and Zeena Chernov are twins who find themselves floundering in the currents of historical events beyond their comprehension. And because they are not schooled in the ways of duplicity, they become brutalized trying to negotiate their survival. Each is a heroic figure, albeit a reluctant one. At times they react well, at times despicably, but they act, because not to act will lead to destruction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul's reading of the Old Testament continues to witness to the significance of reading the Old Testament in a Christian way. This study argues that a theological approach to understanding Paul's appeal to and reading of the Old Testament, especially Isaiah, offers important insights into the ways in which Christians should read the Old Testament and a two-testament canon today. By way of example, this study explores the ways in which Isaiah 40-66's canonical form presents the gospel in miniature with its movement from Israel to Servant to servants. It is subsequently argued that Paul follows this literary movement in his own theological reflection in 2 Corinthians 5:14-6:10. Jesus takes on the unique role and identity of the Servant of Isaiah 40-55, and Paul takes on the role of the servants of the Servant in Isaiah 53-66. From this exegetical exploration conclusions are drawn in the final chapter that seek to apply a term from the history of interpretation to Paul's reading, that is, the plain sense of Scripture. What does an appeal to plain sense broker? And does Paul's reading of the Old Testament look anything like a plain sense reading? Gignilliat concludes that Paul is reading the Old Testament in such a way that the literal sense and its figural potential and capacity are not divorced but are actually organically linked in what can be termed a plain sense reading.

Book excerpt: "There cannot ever be too many good books about Schoenberg, and so it is a special pleasure to welcome Constructive Dissonance, which is far beyond just 'good.' These essays cover a generous range in style and idea. Many of them also are deeply moving, and nothing could be more appropriate for the composer of our century's most fiercely intense music."--Michael Steinberg, author of The Symphony: A Listener's Guide "Although much has been written about Schoenberg, no group of essays examines his life and work in such a broad context. Here we find Schoenberg's matrix: the social, cultural, political, and artistic currents that helped shape him, and to which he made his own extraordinary contribution."--Robert P. Morgan, author of Twentieth-Century Music "As we approach the turn of this century, it is clear that Arnold Schoenberg must becounted as one of the most important figures in Western art music during the last one hundred years. Schoenberg's influence on art-music culture has not only worked its effects through his music, but also through his thinking and writing about music. This collection makes a fitting tribute to Schoenberg and does an admirable job of presenting the many facets of Schoenberg the composer, music theorist, and thinker. These thought-provoking essays present a broad range of approaches to a rich variety of topics within Schoenberg scholarship, and readers will find both familiar and not-so-familiar issues arising during the course of the volume. Constructive Dissonance is certain to become an important book for those interested in twentieth-century art music and culture, and seminal reading for anyone interested in Arnold Schoenberg and his work."--John Covach, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
