Book excerpt: Until recently, Maddy Page's life was pretty routine--morning runs, attending school, and avoiding the spotlight the rest of her family thrives in. But even with all the effort she puts into being unremarkable, someone's noticed. And who wouldn't want to be noticed by MJ? He's handsome, funny, and makes her feel safe--a feeling she's never experienced outside her dreams. MJ is supposed to be on a mundane assignment--save a mortal from a demon on a killing spree. But before he can make contact with his charge, Maddy happens. While every mortal is supposed to have a file as well as a Guardian Angel, she doesn't. She's immune to his compulsions and has abilities mortals shouldn't have. Worse yet, she isn't aware she has them. MJ knows he should focus on his job, but the mysteries surrounding Maddy are frighteningly addictive. And she's in more danger than either of them realizes. With no Guardian and no file, if she dies, neither Heaven nor Hell can claim her soul.

Book excerpt: Jessica Farleigh is desperate. She’s a courtesan, and when she’s asked to seduce Sir Mark and destroy his good name in exchange for enough money to solve all her problems, she agrees. There is, after all, no such thing as a good man, and she should know. She’s known men all her life. Sir Mark Turner wrote the book on male chastity—literally—and made a name for himself as an upright moralist. But he’s also a romantic, and he’s been waiting for the right woman to share his life, his heart, and yes, his bed. Jessica can’t fall in love with him. She can’t let herself respect him. And by the time she realizes she’s in love with him, it’s too late. The only way to win the freedom she needs is to destroy the most honorable man she’s ever met. Note: This book was originally released in 2011. This is a rerelease with an added epilogue.

Book excerpt: Living decades apart, two women get caught in the web of an infamous serial killer. In 1938, at the height of the Great Depression, a madman hunts his victims through the hobo jungles of Cleveland, terrorizing the city. Ethel Harding, a prostitute struggling to survive both the cold streets and the Torso Killer, takes refuge with a devout missionary sect--only to find that its righteous facade conceals the darkest of secrets. Sixty years later, the police find the butchered body of Alfred Wiley in the woods. But before his daughter, Kris, can even identify the remains, things he never told her begin to surface one by one--a mysterious private eye who'd been tracking him, an eerie website devoted to the unsolved "Torso" murders, missing archives, stolen books, and an abandoned Bible factory harboring vagrants. The more she learns about her father's obsession with the Torso Killer, the more Alfred's death appears to be related, pulling Kris further into Cleveland's hellish past. Living decades apart, Ethel and Kris must unravel the truth behind the city's most notorious serial killer...or die trying.

Book excerpt: The narrator of the lead story in this collection occupies an 'unclaimed terrain', as do many of Ajay Navaria's characters. Journeying from a Dantewada village in India's east to the town of Nagpur and from there to Mumbai, the Byronic protagonist is raped, works as a masseur and then as a gigolo even while pursuing his education. The city teaches him the many meanings of labour, and he is freed - if ultimately destroyed - by its infinite possibilities for self - invention. As complex as they are political, Navaria's characters - ranging from a brahmin labourer to a dalit male prostitute - are neither black nor white, neither clearly good nor evil. They inhabit a grey zone; they linger in the transitional space between past object and future subject, between caste and democracy. Unclaimed Terrain represents Giramondo's commitment to South Asian literature and to writing which explores social difference and inequality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because major college football has never had a playoff system to produce a true champion, controversy has surrounded the issue of which team could be declared a National Champion, even as far back as the early years of the last century. The sports media and followers of college football filled that vacuum by creating polls and mathematical systems to name various teams as National Champions, even retroactively naming champions for college football's early years. Some colleges have seized every opportunity to glorify their football teams by claiming a National Championship for every year possible. An exception has been Auburn University, which has not done all it can to celebrate its success on the gridiron and officially claims a National Championship for only two seasons, 1957 and 2010. Auburn even declines to claim a National Championship for its undefeated 1913 team, although that squad is recognized as a National Champion in the Official NCAA Division I Football Records Book. Auburn's Unclaimed National Championships seeks to alter this position of the Auburn University Athletic Department and is perhaps one of the most important books ever written about the Auburn University football program. Author Michael Skotnicki argues that until a playoff system is instituted by the NCAA to establish a true major college football National Champion, multiple teams can make a legitimate claim to a National Championship and the concept of a true single National Champion for any season is mythical. Skotnicki notes that many universities have claimed National Championships for seasons where they were not named such by the two most well-know selectors, the Associated Press and the Coaches Poll, with two universities even adding retroactive National Championship claims to past seasons as recently as this year (2012). This well-researched text brings needed attention to the entire history of Auburn football and makes the case for the position that in addition to the 1957 and 2010 National Championship seasons claimed by the Auburn Athletic Department, there are seven other seasons - 1910, 1913, 1914, 1958, 1983, 1993, and 2004 - for which Auburn should be recognized as a National Champion. Skotnicki, an appellate attorney, provides a history for each of these seasons, brings them to life, and makes the case for why Auburn's claim to recognition as a National Champion for each of those years is as strong or stronger than the teams accepted as national champions in those seasons. Skotnicki argues that in only claiming two National Championship seasons, Auburn University is forsaking much of its great football history, and that it should claim a total of nine National Championships.
