Book Synopsis The humanitarian response to the Pakistan floods by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: International Development Committee
Download or read book The humanitarian response to the Pakistan floods written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: International Development Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-05-10 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this report on the "Humanitarian Response to the Pakistan Floods", the International Development Committee has found that only $700 million of a $2 billion appeal has been delivered on the ground to help those in need, which is unacceptable given that there are millions of people still in need of humanitarian assistance and living in camps. The floods covered one fifth of the country, an area larger than England, and affected 18 million people. More than 1,900 lost their lives, 12 million were displaced and 1.7 million homes were damaged or destroyed. The scale of the floods overwhelmed the capacity of the international system, already stretched by the earthquake in Haiti, to respond effectively. The UN response was patchy with poor leadership and coordination. The Report also calls on the Department for International Development and the wider international community to pay greater attention to disaster preparedness and risk reduction as climate change is likely to increase the frequency and severity of natural disasters. Densely populated urban areas are at greatest risk in terms of loss of life and livelihoods. DFID provided £134 million in humanitarian assistance and the British public donated at least £64 million directly to NGOs through the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) appeal. In addition many Pakistanis living in the UK helped by increasing their level of remittance.

Book Synopsis Liberating the United Nations by : Richard A. Falk
Download or read book Liberating the United Nations written by Richard A. Falk and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2024-07-02 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations (UN) has always loomed large in international conflicts, but today accepted wisdom declares that the organization has lost its way. Liberating The United Nations is a thorough review of its founding and history that tracks critical junctures that obscured or diverted the path to a powerful and just UN that abides by international law. Based on the extensive expertise of two former UN-insiders, Richard Falk and Hans von Sponeck, the book goes beyond critique and diagnosis, proposing ways to achieve a more effective and legitimate UN. The historical sweep of the book offers a uniquely broad perspective on how the UN has evolved from the time of its establishment, and how that evolution reflects, and was defined by, world politics. The book explores these themes through the specific cases of intervention in Palestine, Iraq, and Syria. Liberating The United Nations hopes to reinvigorate the original vision of the UN by asserting its place in a world of amplifying chauvinistic nationalism. Falk and von Sponeck argue for how important the UN has become, and could be, in aiding with the transnational and global challenges of the present and future, including pandemics, environmental crises, and mass migration.
Book Synopsis The United Nations and Civil Society by : Nora McKeon
Download or read book The United Nations and Civil Society written by Nora McKeon and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UN is able to recognize key global challenges, but beset by difficulties in trying to resolve them. In this, it represents the current global political balance, but is also the only international institution that could move it forward. Civil society can be a catalyst for this kind of change. In this book, Nora McKeon provides a comprehensive analysis of UN engagement with civil society. The book pays particular attention to food and agriculture, which now lie at the heart of global governance issues. McKeon shows that politically meaningful space for civil society can be introduced into UN policy dialogue. The United Nations and Civil Society also makes the case that it is only by engaging with organizations which legitimately speak for the 'poor' targeted by the Millennium Development Goals that the UN can promote equitable, sustainable development and build global democracy from the ground up. This book has strong ramifications for global governance, civil society and the contemporary debate over the future of food.

Book Synopsis India - From Regional to World Power by : Ashok Kapur
Download or read book India - From Regional to World Power written by Ashok Kapur and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-04-18 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth account of India's role in world politics at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The author shows how the approach laid down by Nehru and followed by his successors (an approach that included nuclear self-restraint, the search for friendly relations with Pakistan and China, seeking the high ground in moral and diplomatic spheres, and giving a lead to the non-aligned Third World) has been replaced. The new, more self-confident and assertive approach of this book is based on India's growing economic strength and has a more strategic and pro-Western orientation. Meticulous in approach, this book discusses this change, shows how it has come about, and explores how India's role in world politics might develop going forward. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of South Asian studies, Asian politics, international relations, and security studies.
Book Synopsis India and Global Governance by : Harsh V Pant
Download or read book India and Global Governance written by Harsh V Pant and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-03-21 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores India’s role in the global governance architecture post–Cold War. It shows how, with a rise in India’s capabilities, there is an expectation from its external interlocutors that New Delhi ought to play a larger global role. As Indian policymakers redefine their engagements in the global policy matrix, the chapters in the volume analyse India’s role as a challenger and a stakeholder in world politics; its uneasy relationship with Western liberal democracies; and its role in shaping new structures of global governance. The volume focuses on a host of critical issues, including nuclear policy, climate action politics, India’s bid for a permanent seat at the UN Security Council, humanitarian interventions, trade governance, democracy promotion, India’s engagement with other emerging powers in platforms such as the BRICS, the changing dynamics with its neighbours, and maritime governance. A timely reimagining of global politics, this book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of politics and international relations, climate change, military and strategic studies, economics, and South Asian studies.
Book Synopsis The European Union and China, 1949-2008 by : Francis Snyder
Download or read book The European Union and China, 1949-2008 written by Francis Snyder and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 1128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive reference book and commentary on basic documents about relations between the EU and the People's Republic of China from 1949 to the present. It contains all significant official and unofficial documents in English and Chinese about EU-China relations since the founding of the PRC in 1949. Since the opening-up of China in 1979, and especially after the establishment of the EU in 1992, relations between the EU and China have developed apace. Today the EU and China are 'strategic partners', with a very broad-based relationship, extending far beyond trade to encompass a growing number of important economic, political, social and cultural domains. The relationship is certain to gain in importance with increasing globalisation, EU expansion, Chinese membership of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the renewal and development of China, and changes in the international trading system and international politics. This book provides an indispensable foundation for teaching, research, policy-making and advising on EU-China relations. It includes both documents originally published in English and English translations of documents previously available only in Chinese, French or Portuguese. Essential to every library, it will also be required reading for students, teachers, researchers, policy-makers, legal practitioners and government officials in the EU, China, the United States and elsewhere.

Book Synopsis Refugees and Borders in South Asia by : Antara Datta
Download or read book Refugees and Borders in South Asia written by Antara Datta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The war in 1971 between India and Pakistan led to a huge refugee crisis. This book argues that the massive influx of ten million refugees into India within a few short months changed ideas about citizenship and belonging in South Asia. The book looks at how the Indian state, while generously keeping its borders open to the refugees, made it clear that these refugees were different from those generated by Partition, and would not be allowed to settle permanently. It discusses how the state was breaking its 'effective' link between refugees and citizenship, and how at the same time a second 'affective' border was developing between those living in the border areas, especially in Assam and West Bengal. The book argues that the present discourse regarding illegal infiltration from Bangladesh has a long historical trajectory in which the events of 1971 play a key role. It goes on to analyse the aftermath of the 1971 war and the massive repatriation project undertaken by the governments of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh to examine ways in which questions about minorities and belonging remained unresolved post-1971.The book is an interesting contribution to the history of refugees, border-making and 1971 in South Asia, as well as to studies in politics and international relations"--Provided by publisher

Book Synopsis Geopolitics and the Indo-Pacific Region by : Ashok Kapur
Download or read book Geopolitics and the Indo-Pacific Region written by Ashok Kapur and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the geopolitics of the Indo-Pacific region, a major hub of global economic/commercial, military, diplomatic and cultural activities in the 21st century, this textbook provides students with an introduction to the existing debates, frameworks and issues surrounding the Indo-Pacific. The book explains the historical background to highlight the significance of the region, the shift of power from West to East and the importance of the growing connectivity between Asia-Pacific and the Indo-Pacific areas. Covering relations between China and the USA, India, Vietnam and China’s southern neighbours in Southeast Asia, along with Japan, Taiwan, Australia, Sri Lanka and Myanmar, it presents the different arguments regarding the caveats and meaning of ‘Indo-Pacific’. In so doing, it shows that the region is the 'theatre' of great power and middle power competition and suggests that third parties have an area of autonomy in their dealing with American and Chinese leaders. Complete with a list of further readings, Geopolitics and the Indo-Pacific Region fills a gap in the market and will be of great interest to upper-level undergraduates, postgraduate students and researchers studying international relations, ipe, geopolitics, Asian politics and Asian security studies.
