Book excerpt: This is a reprint of the original Dick and Jane book published in 1930 as one of the Elson-Gray Readers. This book was published by William H. Elson (1856-1935) and William S. Gray (1885-1960). It was a revised version of the series of Elson Readers that were being published by 1909. Before the Elston Readers there were the McGuffy Readers starting in 1881. The McGuffy Readers showed a picture of a cat chasing a rat with the sentence "The Cat and the Rat Ran." These readers were used universally in schools for 40 years. The Elston Readers starting in 1909 had more of a story line and avoided unpleasant but realistic pictures of cats eating rats. It had a short list of repeatable words. This was a series of readers with different stories for different grade levels. Dick and Jane were just two of the characters but they were the ones who seemed to catch on. However, other stories became famous such as "The Little Engine that Could."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'There are three kinds of strike I'd recommend: a housework strike, a labour strike, and a sex strike. I can't wait for the first two.' Things Are Against Us is the first collection of essays from Booker Prize-shortlisted Lucy Ellmann. Bold, angry, despairing and very, very funny, these essays cover everything – from matriarchy to environmental catastrophe to Little House on the Prairie. Ellmann calls for a moratorium on air travel, rages against bras, gives Doris Day and Agatha Christie a drubbing, and pleads for sanity in a world that – well, a world that spent four years in the company of Donald Trump, that 'tremendously sick, terrible, nasty, lowly, truly pathetic, reckless, sad, weak, lazy, incompetent, third-rate, clueless, not smart, dumb as a rock, all talk, wacko, zero-chance lying liar'. Things Are Against Us is electric. It's vital. These are essays bursting with energy, and reading them feels like sticking your hand in the mains socket. Lucy Ellmann is the writer we need to guide us through these crazy times.

Book excerpt: With the bankruptcy of modern education and the fallout of years of state controlled public schools, today's students are best indentified as "victims" rather than pupils. In this collection of essays Samuel Blumenfeld discloses the epidemic of humanistic educational theory and provides a clear way out to a truly biblical form of education. Written over a period of 20 years these essays will equip you with a comprehensive Christian view of education along with an easy to understand analysis of the degradation of public education. Book excerpt: “A powerfully told story of family, honor, love, and truth . . . the beautiful and haunting stories told in this book transcend policy and politics.” —Beto O’Rourke A literary gem researched over a year the author spent living in Berlin, Endpapers excavates the extraordinary histories of the author’s grandfather and father: the renowned publisher Kurt Wolff, dubbed “perhaps the twentieth century’s most discriminating publisher” by the New York Times Book Review, and his son Niko, who fought in the Wehrmacht during World War II before coming to America. Born in Bonn into a highly cultured German-Jewish family, Kurt became a publisher at twenty-three, setting up his own firm and publishing Franz Kafka, Joseph Roth, Karl Kraus, and many other authors whose books would soon be burned by the Nazis. After fleeing Germany in 1933, Kurt and his second wife, Helen, founded Pantheon Books in a small Greenwich Village apartment. Pantheon would soon take its own place in literary history with the publication of Nobel laureate Boris Pasternak’s novel Doctor Zhivago, and as the conduit that brought major European works to the States. But Kurt’s taciturn son Niko, offspring of his first marriage to Elisabeth Merck, was left behind in Germany, where despite his Jewish heritage he served the Nazis on two fronts. As Alexander Wolff visits dusty archives and meets distant relatives, he discovers secrets that never made it to the land of fresh starts, including the connection between Hitler and the family pharmaceutical firm E. Merck. With surprising revelations from never-before-published family letters, diaries, and photographs, Endpapers is a moving and intimate family story, weaving a literary tapestry of the perils, triumphs, and secrets of history and exile.
