Book excerpt: One of The Washington Post's 10 Best Books of 2021 * One of NPR's Best Books of 2021 * New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice * Long-listed for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize “Dizzyingly original, fiercely funny, deeply wise.” —Celeste Ng, #1 bestselling author of Little Fires Everywhere “Sanjena Sathian’s Gold Diggers is a work of 24-karat genius.” —Ron Charles, The Washington Post How far would you go for a piece of the American dream? A magical realist coming-of-age story, Gold Diggers skewers the model minority myth to tell a hilarious and moving story about immigrant identity, community, and the underside of ambition. A floundering second-generation teenager growing up in the Bush-era Atlanta suburbs, Neil Narayan is funny and smart but struggles to bear the weight of expectations of his family and their Asian American enclave. He tries to want their version of success, but mostly, Neil just wants his neighbor across the cul-de-sac, Anita Dayal. When he discovers that Anita is the beneficiary of an ancient, alchemical potion made from stolen gold—a “lemonade” that harnesses the ambition of the gold’s original owner—Neil sees his chance to get ahead. But events spiral into a tragedy that rips their community apart. Years later in the Bay Area, Neil still bristles against his community's expectations—and finds he might need one more hit of that lemonade, no matter the cost. Sanjena Sathian’s astonishing debut offers a fine-grained, profoundly intelligent, and bitingly funny investigation into what's required to make it in America. Soon to be a series produced by Mindy Kaling!
Download or read book Gold Diggers written by Charlotte Gray and published by HarperCollins Canada. This book was released on 2010-10-11 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No event in our history is more legendary than the Yukon Gold Rush of 1896. On August 16, when rich gold deposits were discovered in Bonanza Creek, 100,000 prospectors set off for the newly created Dawson City in search of instant wealth. Hungry miners hoped for the one big strike; others, for prosperity in this instant boom town; some, for the adventure of a lifetime. Charlotte Gray, one of our best writers of non-fiction, tells the story of the Gold Rush through the intimate lives of six extraordinary people: the saintly priest Father Judge; the feisty entrepreneur Belinda Mulrooney; the struggling writer Jack London; the imperious British journalist Flora Shaw; the legendary Sam Steele of the Mounties; and the prospector William Haskell. Brilliantly interweaving their stories, Gray creates a fascinating panorama of a frontier town where desperados, saloon keepers, gamblers, dance hall girls, churchmen and law-makers were thrown together in a volatile time. Beautifully illustrated with period photographs and documents of the Gold Rush, Gold Diggers is a colourful and entertaining journey into a world gone mad for gold.

Book Synopsis American Gold Digger by : Brian Donovan
Download or read book American Gold Digger written by Brian Donovan and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2020-10-05 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stereotype of the "gold digger" has had a fascinating trajectory in twentieth-century America, from tales of greedy flapper-era chorus girls to tabloid coverage of Anna Nicole Smith and her octogenarian tycoon husband. The term entered American vernacular in the 1910s as women began to assert greater power over courtship, marriage, and finances, threatening men's control of legal and economic structures. Over the course of the century, the gold digger stereotype reappeared as women pressed for further control over love, sex, and money while laws failed to keep pace with such realignments. The gold digger can be seen in silent films, vaudeville jokes, hip hop lyrics, and reality television. Whether feared, admired, or desired, the figure of the gold digger appears almost everywhere gender, sexuality, class, and race collide. This fascinating interdisciplinary work reveals the assumptions and disputes around women's sexual agency in American life, shedding new light on the cultural and legal forces underpinning romantic, sexual, and marital relationships.

Download or read book Gold Digger written by Tyler Mahoney and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-10-03 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you haven't seen a Discovery Channel gold-hunting show, you might picture a gold prospector as a relic of the Wild West: a TNT-toting, bearded old man wildly swinging a pick on the hunt for nuggets, guided by old maps, superstition, legends and instinct. It's still predominantly a man's world, and still often fanatical, but these days the golden dream attracts people from all walks of life—and 25-year-old Tyler Mahoney (Australian star of the Discovery Channel's Gold Rush series) is leading the way. Hailing from Kalgoorlie, Tyler is a fourth-generation gold miner and has seen up close how gold fever makes normally reasonable people do the most irrational things. From mysterious corpses in the desert to huge heists, backstabbings to life-changing finds, Tyler unearths hair-raising stories and legends from Australia's gold prospecting past and present, while sharing her experience forging her way in a traditionally male domain. She writes candidly about the push and pull of the gold world in her own life, as well as her struggles with bipolar disorder —a mental-health challenge that in some ways parallels the feast-or-famine nature of prospecting itself. With humor, grit and an infectious zest for life, "gold digger" Tyler Mahoney stakes her claim.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feedback from readers Jussi has an interesting approach to things. The book absorbs from the first page and holds in its grip - exciting experiences, live narration, as if it were itself involved in the adventures of a courageous Finn. At the beginning of each chapter is a map that keeps the reader well involved in the meeting places. Incredibly exciting, suprising events, a sense of experimentation and risk-taking creat the main content of the book. The personel gallery is extensive. Meetinting different people, camping and living in the woods, personel situation descriptions and humor make the book interesting and unique. The spoken language of the book creats authenticity in the events. An important contribution of the book is to remind people of their soliradity and willingness to help. The book is a description of trust and also, threat, courage and tolerance for discomfrt. The whole book is a fully packed activity, there is little time to breathe in between. Only photographs give room for concise text. I enjoy the smooth, colorful narration of the book. I like Jussi ́s style - ralaxing reading, captivating story telling. I highly recommend the book to seniors as well, not to mention young people. I look forward to the publication of the following Jussi ́s books.
