Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Twentieth Century Hat Factory E may say, without exaggeration, that no hat factory con 'structed in recent years has been the cause of so much discussion, so much criticism, favorable or otherwise, as the one recently erected and now in Operation in the City of Danbury, known as the lee-mclachlan factory. It is natural that there should be much discussion regarding this plant. It is the most ambitious undertaking of the kind that has ever been attempted in Connecticut (although there are several larger factories in Massachu setts, New York and Pennsylvania), and it is the most modern factory making both soft and stiff hats in the United States. It is unfortu natelv true that practically all of the discussion regarding this enter prise has been lacking in a proper basis of knowledge of what the factory really is and what are the aims or purposes of its owners. It is to fill this want that this book is written. This factory was built to accommodate the normal amount of production of the four factories heretofore Operated separately by Mr. Lee and Mr. Mclachlan; that is to say, two rough shops, one soft Shop and one stiff shop. The Lee - mclachlan Company is not, in reality, a manufacturing concern In the-usual sense. It is a company formed for the purpose of providing a common plant, Common power. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After several pages of prologue summing up 18th century highlights--especially the rise in importance of geometry--some forty pages cover 1784-1916, focusing on the heavily fenestrated high-rises of the Chicago School and the iron and glass pavilions of Europe. The chapter spanning 1892-1925 concentrates on the many disputes over the trajectory of modernism: Nieuwe Kunst, Stile Liberty, Jugendstil, and Art Nouveau, all arguing the direction that the boom of prisons, hospitals, schools, town halls, and other institutional buildings would take. Three more time divisions follow and a concise compendium of architect biographies ends the volume. Along with an array of great pictures (par for Taschen), Gossel and Leuthauser--both active in the private sector--add a strong prose style attentive to debates among architects and the socioeconomic stage on which architects act. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although perhaps best known today as the home of Vauxhall Motors, Luton's industrial roots run much deeper. Long before it became associated with motor cars, Luton was the centre of ladies' hat production in this country - a success founded upon the earlier regional industry of straw-plaiting. Many surrounding towns and villages fed into the industry and helped to make the region globally renowned. At its peak in the 1930s, the region was producing as many as 70 million hats in a single year; however, it entered a rapid decline following the Second World War from which it never recovered. This has left Luton, Dunstable and a number of other local towns with a challenging inheritance of neglected and decaying fragments of a once vital industry. This book is intended to be an introduction and guide to the area's historical depth and to its distinctive and varied character, seeking to explain the development of the region as the centre of the hatting industry in the south and exploring the lives of the people working there during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The historic links between the surviving building stock and the hatting industry are assessed and the book highlights the significance of the surviving fabric and the potential of the historic environment within future conservation and regeneration plans.

Book excerpt: Yonkers in the Twentieth Century chronicles the decline and rebirth of the fourth largest city in New York State, once known as "the Queen City of the Hudson" and "the City of Gracious Living." Previously an industrial powerhouse, the city's factories turned out essential items that helped the United States win two world wars. Following World War II, the industrial base of Yonkers eroded as companies moved away, contributing to an increase in poverty. To address the housing needs of its low-income residents, Yonkers built public housing, resulting in a nearly thirty-year court case that, for the first time in United States history, linked school and housing segregation. The case was finally settled in the early years of the twenty-first century, a time that also witnessed the continuation of the city's economic redevelopment efforts along the Hudson River and contiguous downtown area. Striving to once again become "the Queen City of the Hudson," Yonkers is being rebuilt beginning at its historic waterfront.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this critical darling Vermeer's captivating and enigmatic paintings become windows that reveal how daily life and thought-from Delft to Beijing--were transformed in the 17th century, when the world first became global. A Vermeer painting shows a military officer in a Dutch sitting room, talking to a laughing girl. In another canvas, fruit spills from a blue-and-white porcelain bowl. Familiar images that captivate us with their beauty--but as Timothy Brook shows us, these intimate pictures actually give us a remarkable view of an expanding world. The officer's dashing hat is made of beaver fur from North America, and it was beaver pelts from America that financed the voyages of explorers seeking routes to China-prized for the porcelains so often shown in Dutch paintings of this time, including Vermeer's. In this dazzling history, Timothy Brook uses Vermeer's works, and other contemporary images from Europe, Asia, and the Americas to trace the rapidly growing web of global trade, and the explosive, transforming, and sometimes destructive changes it wrought in the age when globalization really began.
