Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truths of the Catholic Religion, Vol. 2: Proved From Scripture Alone, in a Series of Popular Discourses Chiefly Addressed to Non-Catholics The Doctrine of the Catholic Church, regarding the veneration of relics, is thus denned by the Fathers of the Council of Trent. The Holy Synod decrees: "That the bodies of holy martyrs and of others now living with Christ, which were the members of Christ and the temples of the Holy Spirit, and which shall be raised by him to eternal life and be glorified, are to be venerated by the faithful. Through them many benefits are bestowed on men by God; so that they who affirm that no veneration and honour are due to the relics of Saints, or that to honour them and other sacred monuments is useless, as likewise to celebrate the memories of Saints in order to obtain their aid, are absolutely to be condemned, as the Church has condemned and does condemn them." - Sess. xxv. de Invocat. SS. In these relics we Catholics do not imagine any inherent power, any supernatural and divine efficacy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Courageous and inspiring.”—Karen Armstrong, author of The Case for God “James Carroll takes us to the heart of one of the great crises of our times.”—Stephen Greenblatt, author of The Swerve An eloquent memoir by a former priest and National Book Award–winning writer who traces the roots of the Catholic sexual abuse scandal back to the power structure of the Church itself, as he explores his own crisis of faith and journey to renewal NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY PUBLISHERS WEEKLY James Carroll weaves together the story of his quest to understand his personal beliefs and his relationship to the Catholic Church with the history of the Church itself. From his first awakening of faith as a boy to his gradual disillusionment as a Catholic, Carroll offers a razor-sharp examination both of himself and of how the Church became an institution that places power and dominance over people through an all-male clergy. Carroll argues that a male-supremacist clericalism is both the root cause and the ongoing enabler of the sexual abuse crisis. The power structure of clericalism poses an existential threat to the Church and compromises the ability of even a progressive pope like Pope Francis to advance change in an institution accountable only to itself. Carroll traces this dilemma back to the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages, when Scripture, Jesus Christ, and His teachings were reinterpreted as the Church became an empire. In a deeply personal re-examination of self, Carroll grapples with his own feelings of being chosen, his experiences as a priest, and the moments of doubt that made him leave the priesthood and embark on a long personal journey toward renewal—including his tenure as an op-ed columnist at The Boston Globe writing about sexual abuse in the Church. Ultimately, Carroll calls on the Church and all reform-minded Catholics to revive the culture from within by embracing anti-clerical, anti-misogynist resistance and staying grounded in the spirit of love that is the essential truth at the heart of Christian belief and Christian life.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beauty and Truth of the Catholic Church, Vol. 2: Sermons From the German, Adapted and Edited The following words of our divine Saviour, con cisely and beautifully tell us His sublime mission to men: I am the way, the truth and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. Innumerable are the ways men go, but there is only one right way, only one that leads to eternal happiness, and that way is Christ. Innumerable opinions govern men, shadowing forth various truths, but only one truth shows us the greatness of God, and our own destiny, and that truth Christ taught, and the Catho lic Church still teaches. How varied is the life of man? But there is only one life pleasing to God, one that leads to eternal life, one that is a life with and for Christ. Since that time, Sheed & Ward has kept the book in print and has published several studies of John Courtney Murray's life and work. We are proud to present a new edition of this classic text, which features a comprehensive introduction by Peter Lawler that places Murray in the context of Catholic and American history and thought while revealing his relevance today. From the new Introduction by Peter Lawler: The Jesuit John Courtney Murray (1904-67) was, in his time, probably the best known and most widely respected American Catholic writer on the relationship between Catholic philosophy and theology and his country's political life. The highpoint of his influence was the publication of We Hold These Truths in the same year as an election of our country's first Catholic president. Those two events were celebrated by a Time cover story (December 12, 1960) on Murray's work and influence. The story's author, Protestant Douglas Auchincloss, reported that it was "The most relentlessly intellectual cover story I've done." His amazingly wide ranging and dense--if not altogether accurate--account of Murray's thought was crowned with a smart and pointed conclusion: "If anyone can help U.S. Catholics and their non-Catholic countrymen toward the disagreement that precedes understanding--John Courtney Murray can." . . . Murray's work, of course, is treated with great respect and has had considerable influence, but now it's time to begin to think of him as one of America's very few genuine political philosophers. His disarmingly lucid and accessible prose has caused his book to be widely cited and celebrated, but it still is not well understood. It is both praised and blamed for reconciling Catholic faith with the fundamental premises of American political life. It is praised by liberals for paving the way for Vatican II's embrace of the American idea of religious liberty, and it is

Book excerpt: In On Divine Revelation—one of Garrigou-Lagrange’s most significant works, here available in English for the very first time—he offers a classic treatment of this foundational topic. It is an organized and thorough defense of both the rationality and supernaturality of divine revelation. He presents a careful yet stimulating account of the scientific character of theology, the nature of revelation itself, mystery, dogma, the grace of faith, the powers of human reason, false interpretations thereof (rationalism, naturalism, agnosticism, and pantheism), the motives of credibility, and much more. Though written a century ago, On Divine Revelation will restore confidence in theology as a distinct and unified science and return focus to the fundamental questions of the doctrine of revelation. It also serves as a salutary corrective to contemporary theology’s anthropocentrism and concern with what is relative in revelation and religious experience by reorienting our theological attention to what is most certain, central, and sure in our knowledge of divine revelation: the Triune God who has revealed his inner life and salvific will. Readers will see the great splendor of the gift of divine revelation: radiant with credibility before the gaze of reason and drawing our supernatural assent to the mysteries through the gift of faith. As Fr. Cajetan Cuddy, O.P. observes, “On Divine Revelation . . . is a stunning work of inestimable value. No other subsequent work on this topic has come close to meeting it (much less surpassing it).”

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inquiry Into the Catholic Truths Hidden Under Certain Articles of the Creed of the Church of Rome:, Original Sin and Justification, Vol. 2 IN preparing the Second Part of this work for the Press, the Author feels assured that all who discern the signs of the times must be convinced that the controversy with Rome requires more than ever a direct and systematic examination of the Decrees of the Council of Trent, and also that the Truths hidden under those Decrees should be sought out and duly honoured; so that Protestantism may appear in its true character of witnessing for Truth as well as protesting against its perversion. In this conviction he has been confirmed by those writers who reviewed the former part of this work, and also by less. The method I have adopted throughout is, -First, to state the Doctrine of the Catholic Church on each point, as defined by the Fathers of the Council of Trent. Secondly, to demonstrate that such Article of Faith is clearly delivered in the Holy Scriptures. Thirdly, to annex copious illustrative reflections, notes, and references, from eminent Protestant and Catholic divines, literary characters, &c. Whilst I humbly entreat indulgence for the defects and imperfections you will discover in this work, I ask of you to peruse it piously, consistently, candidly, prudently, and attentively. Piously-by fervently supplicating the Father of Lights for those aids and graces, which are necessary to fix in the mind the light of truth, and to dissipate the clouds of prej udice. Consistently-placing before your reason the real articles of the belief of the Catholic Church; studying their harmony, and tracing out their connexion; following the chain of proofs, which establish, and the series of authorities which enforce them-placing the Catholic of ages past by the side of the Catholic of the present day. Candidly-with no bias upon your mind but the love of truth; no propensity in your heart but the desire of eternal happiness; and every prejudice and partiality laid aside; weighing the answers of the Catholic with the same care with which you weigh your own. Prudently-consulting not a man who, ignorant and prejudiced, misrepresents and vilifies the Catholic Religion, but a clergyman who has studied in the Universities of the metropolis of Catholicity, and has been long in the habit of teaching the Catholic Doctrine, as professor of Divinity in the same metropolis, and other Catholic cities, -who therefore, it may be presumed, knowing it, win represent it faithfully. Attentivively- with that degree of interest which I proportioned to so great a subject, and to the expectation of future happiness. Inattention to the discovery of religious truth is. as real a moral depravity as is the neglect of religious practice. To conclude, should any expression appeal to you illiberal or severe, I trust you will neither attribute it to the feelings of my heart, nor to be prejudiced, bigoted mind, but justly appreciating my endeavours, you will believe that, animated by charity FOR ALL, my sole and earnest wish is, to instil and impress a conviction of truth. "Now to God and our Father be glory, world without enll, Amen." Philipians, 4, . v.20. IN presuming to publish a Second Edition of these Scriptural Lectures, I beg to inform my Catho1ic and Protestant friends, that I have not merely confined myself to the amendments of the first, but, under advice, I have incorporated the notes of the former Edition in the text of the present; submitted the Scriptural proofs that so fully substantiate the "Trinity of Persons, and the Divinity of Jesus Christ;" and, independently of many material additions to the body of the Work, annexed a Lecture on the " Veneration pard by the Catholic Church to the Blessed Virgin Mary," (the substance of a Discourse delivered in the Church of the Most Holy Trinity, Bermondsey, Sunday Evening, Jan. 5, 1840, ) and another on the Supremacy of the Pope. Thus I indulge a fond hope, that if the First Edition, divested of the present improvements, was favourably received, the present will not be less acceptable. To conclude, I feel it a duty, in justice and can dour, to add, that in arranging the Lectures, I am very much indebted to the irrefragable writings of the venerable and learned Bishop of Melipotamus, the Right Rev. Dr. Wiseman, and to Fletcher, Husenbeth, Coombes, and Waterworth's excellent Apologies in defence of Catholicity."

Belloc has little admiration for the so-called leaders of the time and credits the Reformation to behind-the-scenes players. Book excerpt: This volume explores the historical, theological, sociological, and ethical dimensions of the current issues threatening the two thousand-year-old Roman Catholic Church. The interdisciplinary analysis contained within the volume exposes the destructive convictions and actions of the Roman Catholic clergy that has produced the current institutional crisis while suggesting options for moving forward. Documenting the cases that constitute the many crises currently surrounding Catholicism, the volume aims to provide clarity and conscience. At the same time, with a constructive vision of an ethics and religious practice rooted in integrity and transparency, the authors offer a path towards holistic and holy reformation by and for Catholics.
