Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguing for the need both to preach Christ in every sermon and to preach regularly from the Old Testament, Sidney Greidanus develops a christocentric method that will help preachers do both simultaneously. Greidanus challenges Old Testament scholars to broaden their focus and to understand the Old Testament not only in its own historical context but also in the context of the New Testament. Suggesting specific steps and providing concrete examples, this volume provides a practical guide for preaching Christ from the Old Testament.

Book excerpt: “God has appointed preaching in worship as one great means of accomplishing his ultimate goal in the world.” —John Piper John Piper makes a compelling claim in these pages about the purpose of preaching: it is intended not merely as an explanation of the text but also as a means of awakening worship by being worship in and of itself. Christian preaching is a God-appointed miracle aiming to awaken the supernatural seeing, savoring, and showing of the glory of Christ. Distilling over forty years of experience in preaching and teaching, Piper shows preachers how and what to communicate from God’s Word, so that God’s purpose on earth will advance through Biblesaturated, Christ-exalting, God-centered preaching—in other words, expository exultation.

In The Jesus I Never Knew, Yancey: Cuts through existing views and preconceptions of Jesus, citing experts from church history, modern history, and popular culture Discusses how different people and cultures view Jesus Dissects popular quotes about Jesus Points us back to the Bible The Jesus I Never Knew will engage your heart, mind, emotions, and senses, preparing you for a new, life-changing encounter with the real Jesus described in the Gospels. Praise for The Jesus I Never Knew: "This is the best book about Jesus I have ever read, probably the best book about Jesus in the whole century. Yancey gently took away my blinders and blazed the trail through my own doubting fears, pious know-it-all, and critical balderdash until I saw the Savior anew and thought I heard him ask me, 'Now whom do you say that I am?' and I understood the question as I never had before." --Lewis B. Smedes, Senior Professor, Fuller Seminary "Philip Yancey takes the reader with him on his very personal journey to Jesus. In The Jesus I Never Knew, I became convinced that the Jesus I met--in some ways for the first time--has known me all along. This book is destined to become a favorite--to recommend to those still seeking Jesus and to pass along to those who've met him, but long to know him more." --Elisa Morgan, President Emerita, MOPS International

Book excerpt: Every Sunday morning, ministers have a choice to make. They can give a motivational speech that is ankle-deep and laced with all kinds of inconsequential anecdotesor they can preach. Sure-Fire Preaching is intended for those who choose the latter. A practical guide to biblical exposition that any preacher can use in their preaching ministry, Sure-Fire Preaching presents a tried-and-true method of presenting Scripture the way God intended for it to be communicated. In this resource, author Jeff Dickson presents the ideas of Dr. Paul Fink, whose career in preaching and teaching spanned fifty years at Grace Theological Seminary and Liberty University. Dickson covers the three most significant areas of sermonizing: the science of preaching, the art of sermonizing, and the miracle of voicing. Sure-Fire Preaching summarizes everything that is necessary for accurately, creatively, and effectively presenting Scripture and answering the call of 2 Timothy 4:2 to preach the Word!

A Manual for Preaching addresses the practical (and perennial) issue of how to move from the biblical text to an effective sermon. The author, a well-respected teacher of preachers, shows how to discern the text's theological meaning and let that meaning shape the development of the sermon. Clearly written and illustrated with Old Testament and New Testament examples, the book helps preachers negotiate larger swaths of Scripture and includes two annotated sermon manuscripts from Kuruvilla.

Book excerpt: This is a short and to the point book on pastors and preaching. It is designed for the busy biovocational pastor who may not have the time nor desire to read a larger book on preaching. Much of the material in this book reflects the material in other books on preaching, but this book does contain some ideas that will not be found in any other book on preaching. This book suggests that a pastor who desires to see his people grow spiritually and in Biblical understanding would be well served to develop the practice of preaching through the books of the Bible. It points our some distinct advantages to the preacher and the congregation in this plan of preaching. The last section of the book contains some sermons that were prepared in the manner suggested by the author.

Book excerpt: My goal in writing this book is to help busy pastors and laymen who may not be able to go to seminary, do not have time to read the multiple tomes written about preaching, or are overwhelmed by the volume of such books. Perhaps he is bi-vocational (which we all know is a code word for full-time job plus a full-time pastorate) and has wrestled with attaining excellence in the pulpit on a weekly basis. Maybe he has an MDiv but has grown stale in his study and needs a fresh perspective. These are common experiences among pastors, so I share my solution-a simple process for preparing sermons that are faithful to God's Word. The process outlined in this book is designed to maximize the value of time which can be afforded to sermon preparation. When the week is closing in and your study time feels compressed, Sunday's sermon still must be prepared. In those moments, a defined process which is simple, easy to use, and stays true to Scripture will serve you well. I believe you will find the information and instructions in this book beneficial in such a way.The information within the book is written in a conversational tone. However, the content is a condensation of scholarly work and hermeneutical theory. This book has been divided into two major sections: Ideology and Methodology. The first major division will deal with the ideology behind the process; why we do it the way we do. We must begin with similar views on the value, power, and importance of the Bible if we are going to be able to convey its truth well. The process in this book is based on a high view of Scripture as God's Word. The major presupposition underlying this process is that the Word of God is inerrant, infallible, and written by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Thus, it seemed important to establish a starting place from where we can all move forward together with a shared understanding of how to approach God's Word. The second major division is the process itself. After an introductory segment, each of the short chapters in that section will deal with a different step in the process. Although the process is divided into steps, it is not intended to become a robotic, factory-like process. The purpose of the steps is to give you a method to work through a passage in the Bible and discover the truth within it, then, to convey that truth to your audience in an understandable way. One of my goals has been to keep this as simple as possible while also respecting the importance of the task. Another goal is to give you a tool which you can start using the first week you read it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voicing one theme for the entire Bible and structuring all sermons around that idea may seem to be an impossible challenge. For veteran pastor and preaching professor Edmund Clowney it will not do to preach a text from either the Old or New Testaments without fully preaching its ultimate and primary focus-the person and work of Jesus Christ. He writes, "To see the text in relation to Christ is to see it in its larger context, the context of God's purpose in revelation." Clowney's rationale for emphasizing Christ's presence in the Old Testament rests on the purpose of the Hebrew Scripture. The Old Testament follows God's one great plan for human history and redemption, and the plan is not only from him but centers on him: his presence in his incarnate Son. The witness of the Scriptures to Christ is the reason they were written, so it is appropriate to emphasize this element in the Old Testament as well as in the New Testament. By offering numerous full-length examples of his own sermons that emphasize Christ as the principle theme of Scripture, Clowney illustrates for those who will never have the privilege of being his students how they can craft sermons which present Christ as the primary consideration of the text. He also offers specific instructions on preparing such a sermon. He discusses the personal habits of prayer and Bible study that prepare pastors to seek out Christ's presence. Clowney emphasizes the importance of including a specific application in every sermon so that Christ is presented both in what he says and does to reveal himself in the biblical text and in what he says and does to direct Christians' lives today. Students preparing for the pastorate, pastors desiring to increase their emphasis on Christ in their sermons, and those seeking Christ's presence in all of Scripture will find a help in Clowney's writings.
