As suddenly as armies of men withdrew from the field of conflict, other armies of sinister forces took their places in a new and mightier warfare. Will the Christian message suffice for this' hour? Not unless it has an inter racial bearing, for all, equally, everywhere. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten Times One Is Ten: The Possible Reformation His little book would never have been writ ten, I suppose, but for the persuasion of my kind friend, the late Dr. Wayland, the Presi dent of Brown University. It is nearly fifteen years ago that I told him the plan of this story, if it may be called a story, expressing the wish that some of the masters would undertake to illustrate the lessons involved in it. Every one who knew him and how many there are who knew him enough to love him will remember how practical and how personal was every notion of the religious life, of Christian labor, and of missionary triumph, in his mind. What he thought the practical and personal character of my little sketch pleased him; and he was kind enough to urge me once and again to enlarge it, and to print it. I think it is because he wished it, that I have tried to do so. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty-Two Primary Missionary Stories: Including 52 Drawings and Verses For a number of years it has been evi dent to those concerned in the education of children on the subject of missions, that material for the consecutive pres entation of the missionary cause to the young was difficult if not impossible to obtain. This situation confronted the Committee on Missionary Education, in the Reformed Church in America, when it undertook to provide graded lessons in missions for the children and young people of the churches. After giving much study to the problem, this Com mittee, appointed by the Mission Boards of the Reformed Church, decided that the way to begin the development of a missionary interest among young chil dren, was by means of simple stories, to be told by the primary teacher in the class, or by the mother in the home. This book is one result of that decision. In. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He Often told in after years how his heart was stirred as his grand mother, in a great Quaker bonnet, and white kerchief crossed over her plain dress, rose and began her address in deep, mellow tones, pronouncing each word so slowly and tenderly that the Opening sentence - always the same, no matter what the theme of her discourse sounded like a benediction: Obey the Spirit within, and be at peace with God. This sentence so deeply fast ened itself in his childish memory that long afterward, when the Sunday-school had shed its benign in uence upon him, it became a ruling maxim for his own conduct. The devout c1d lady did not live to know that the youngest of her auditors in the Old Quaker meeting-house was consecrated by her earnest, fervent words to a life of re markable usefulness. Book excerpt: Must we stumble through sorrow and tragedy without understanding or is there a lighted way--a path--through suffering? Elisabeth Elliot plots the treacherous passage through pain, grief, and loss a journey most of us will make many times in our life. Through it all, she says, there is only one reliable path, and if you walk it, you will see the transformation of all your losses, heartbreaks, and tragedies into something strong and purposeful. In this powerful moving book, Elisabeth Elliot does not hesitate to ask hard questions, to examine tenderly the hurts we suffer, and to explore boldly the nature of God whose sovereign care for us is so intimate and perfect that he confounds our finite understanding. A Path through Suffering is a book for anyone searching for faith, comfort, and assurance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did Christianity become the dominant religion in the West? In the early first century, a small group of peasants from the backwaters of the Roman Empire proclaimed that an executed enemy of the state was God’s messiah. Less than four hundred years later it had become the official religion of Rome with some thirty million followers. It could so easily have been a forgotten sect of Judaism. Through meticulous research, Bart Ehrman, an expert on Christian history, texts and traditions, explores the way we think about one of the most important cultural transformations the world has ever seen, one that has shaped the art, music, literature, philosophy, ethics and economics of modern Western civilisation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isabella Lilias Trotter (1853-1928) was an artist and a missionary for over 38 years to the Muslims of Algeria. John Ruskin, the famous art critic, didn't believe that ladies could paint before he met Lilias. He changed his mind after he met her and believed that if she would give her life to painting she could become the greatest painter of the nineteenth century. Ruskin believed that if she would devote herself to art "she would be the greatest living painter and do things that would be immortal. " He was unhappy that she was spending so much time on the streets of London, helping with the YWCA, when he thought she ought to be painting. Lilias, however, decided to give up her career in art in order to serve God. She always remained a good friend of Ruskin's though, and they wrote many letters when she was in Algeria. She also wrote several books - beautifully illustrated by herself, including: Parables of the Cross (1894), Parables of the Christ-Life (1899), and a book for Sufi Muslims, The Way of the Sevenfold Secret.
