Gordon Watson proposes that the Trinity, as a basic hermeneutical key, needs to be understood as expressing the language and the structure of the church's liturgical experience. In this context, the relationship between God and the creation takes into full account God's free condescension as Creator and Reconciler as well as the created integrity of the creature. The Eastern church's trinitarian vision clarifies and resolves the theological inadequacies of Barth's presentation. The author was a student of TF Torrance and a previous version of this book was among a select few books higlighted by Torrance in the Preface to his second edition of Karl Barth: An Introduction to his Early Theology . Watson taught Systematic Theology for many years in Brisbane and has contributed numerous articles to the Scottish Journal of Theology .

Wittman first examines how they understand the correspondence and distinction between God's being and external acts within an overarching concern to avoid idolatry. Second, he analyzes the kind of relation God bears to creation that follows from these respective understandings. Despite many common goals, Aquinas and Barth ultimately differ on the subject matter of theological reason with consequences for their ability to uphold God's distinctiveness consistently. These mutually informative issues offer some important lessons for contemporary theology.

Yet, while Barth's commitment to the doctrine of the procession of the Holy Spirit from the Father and the Son (Filioque) is well-known, many scholars dismiss his stand as ecumenically untenable and few have bothered to subject his stance on the Filioque to close theological analysis. For those interested in this long-standing ecumenical point of contention between Eastern and Western trinitarian theology, this book will show how Barth's doctrine of the Filioque may still have something to contribute to the debate. The work traces the origin of Barth's commitment to the Filioque in his early career (particularly in Romans and the Göttingen Dogmatics), and then analyzes how the doctrine functions throughout the Church Dogmatics. Guretzki concludes that Barth's doctrine of the Filioque, while clearly standing within the Western trinitarian tradition, is atypical in that he refuses to speak of a double-procession in favour of a common procession of the Spirit--a position that has more affinity with the Eastern position than many of Barth's critics may have thought

How can Christians describe a God who is distinct from time but acts within it? This book presents one creative and profound approach to this perennial theme by examining the theology of Karl Barth. Contrary to interpretations of Barth that suggest he held a view of eternity as abstracted from time and history, this comprehensive study suggests that he provides a more complex and fruitful understanding. Rather than defining eternity in a negative relation to time, Barth relates eternity and time with reference to such doctrines as the Trinity and incarnation. This ensures overcoming what he saw as the "Babylonian Captivity" of an abstract philosophical definition of eternity that developed in the Western tradition. The central argument of the book suggests an analogia trinitaria temporis, a basic analogy between the eternal being of God and God's creating and activity within time. Also, implicit in Barth's view is a narrative view of time, similar to the view of Paul Ricoeur, which unfolds as the Church Dogmatics develops.
