Book excerpt: Silahydrocarbons are members of a relatively new class of liquid lubricants with great potential for use in space mechanisms. They are unimolecular species consisting of silicon, carbon, and hydrogen. They possess unique wear, viscosity, and volatility properties while retaining the ability to solubilize conventional additives. The tribological properties of several members of this class, including tri, tetra- and penta-compounds, are presented. These properties include: viscosity-temperature (ASTM D446), viscosity-pressure coefficient, vapor pressure, volatility, lubricant lifetimes, traction, reciprocating and four ball wear rates and bearing performance. Lubricant lifetimes were determined using a vacuum ball bearing simulator, the spiral orbit tribometer (SOT). Wear was measured using a Cameron Plint reciprocating tribometer and wear rates with a vacuum four ball tribometer. Conventional viscometry was used for viscosity-temperature measurements and a Knudsen cell for vapor pressure. Vacuum Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) was also used for volatility measurements. Pressure viscosity coefficients (a values) were estimated from EHL (elastohydrodynamic lubrication) film thickness measurements. Traction coefficients were measured with a twin disk traction rig. Bearing tests were performed in a vacuum bearing test facility. These properties are compared to existing state-of-the-art space lubricants. Jones, W. R., Jr. and Jansen, M. J. and Gschwender, L. Book excerpt: The development and launch of the first artificial satellite Sputnik more than five decades ago propelled both the scientific and engineering communities to new heights as they worked together to develop novel solutions to the challenges of spacecraft system design. This symbiotic relationship has brought significant technological advances that have enabled the design of systems that can withstand the rigors of space while providing valuable space-based services. With its 26 chapters divided into three sections, this book brings together critical contributions from renowned international researchers to provide an outstanding survey of recent advances in spacecraft technologies. The first section includes nine chapters that focus on innovative hardware technologies while the next section is comprised of seven chapters that center on cutting-edge state estimation techniques. The final section contains eleven chapters that present a series of novel control methods for spacecraft orbit and attitude control.

Book excerpt: The performance and durability of advanced, high temperature foil air bearings are evaluated under a wide range (10-50 kPa) of loads at temperatures from 25 to 650 deg C. The bearings are made from uncoated nickel based superalloy foils. The foil surface experiences sliding contact with the shaft during initial start/stop operation. To reduce friction and wear, the solid lubricant coating, PS 304, is applied to the shaft by plasma spraying. PS304 is a NiCr based Cr2O3 coating with silver and barium fluoride/calcium fluoride solid lubricant additions. The results show that the bearings provide lives well in excess of 30,000 cycles under all of the conditions tested. Several bearings exhibited lives in excess of 100,000 cycles. Wear is a linear function of the bearing load. The excellent performance measured in this study suggests that these bearings and the PS 304 coating are well suited for advanced high temperature, oil-free turbomachinery applications.

Book excerpt: The use of lubricants began in ancient times and has developed into a major international business through the need to lubricate machines of increasing complexity. The impetus for lubricant development has arisen from need, so lubricating practice has preceded an understanding of the scientific principles. This is not surprising as the scientific basis of the technology is, by nature, highly complex and interdisciplinary. However, we believe that the understanding of lubricant phenomena will continue to be developed at a molecular level to meet future challenges. These challenges will include the control of emissions from internal combustion engines, the reduction of friction and wear in and continuing improvements to lubricant performance and machinery, life-time. More recently, there has been an increased understanding of the chemical aspects of lubrication, which has complemented the knowledge and understanding gained through studies dealing with physics and engineering. This book aims to bring together this chemical information and present it in a practical way. It is written by chemists who are authorities in the various specialisations within the lubricating industry, and is intended to be of interest to chemists who may already be working in the lubricating industry or in academia, and who are seeking a chemist's view of lubrication. It will also be of benefit to engineers and technologists familiar with the industry who require a more fundamental understanding of lubricants.

Book excerpt: This publication presents the proceedings of ICPMSE-4, the fourth international conference on Protection of Materials and Structures from the Low Earth Orbit Space Environment, held in Toronto April 23-24, 1998. The conference was hosted and organized by Integrity Testing Laboratory Inc. (ITL), and held at the University ofToronto's Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS). Twenty two industrial companies, six universities and fourteen government agencies from Canada, USA, United Kingdom, France, Israel, Russia, Ukraine and the Netherlands were represented by over 75 participants indicating increasing international co-operation in this critical arena of protection of materials in space. Twenty-seven speakers, world experts in their fields, delivered talks on a wide variety of topics on various aspects of material protection in space. Representatives from the Canadian, American, European and Israeli space agencies as well as from leading space research laboratories ofmajor aerospace industries gathered at UTIAS to discuss the latest developments in the field of material and structure protection from the harsh space environment.
