This book was released on 2022-06-22 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine this: living in a world where common sense is clearly no longer common nor does it make sense, where realism may or may not be real because “made up” is easier to accept but hard to explain. And finally, where one influential voice, albeit one with a flip flop wavering vibrato of insufficient substance and accountability, catapulted with a mindless band of attached sticky notes, is par for the golf course of life. Freedom! To escape! Freedom! To think deeply! Freedom! To be a space saver without apology! Enter J. D. Babycakes to offer you another mind-blowing world of the following: Your inner facsimile of debatable self. Reality surmises we all have a part, a bit, a smidgen of J. D. Babycakes in each of us. And why not? J. D. Babycakes is an evolution. She continues to evolve with time, with life experiences, in wisdom, in truth, and in conflict. She is a deep thinker seen as an oddball at times. In short, she is an imperfect presence. Her only insight to others would be one of those mirror images of Who are you anyway—a leader, a follower, an in-betweener, or a space saver. So in the end, it doesn’t matter what thinking process J. D. Babycakes utilizes. Her only message to you is to dig deeper and to know that when you do, sure, you might go overboard. Just try not to drown yourself!

Book Synopsis The Barrio Gangs of San Antonio, 1915-2015 by : Mike Tapia
Download or read book The Barrio Gangs of San Antonio, 1915-2015 written by Mike Tapia and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-22 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barrio Gangs is the most comprehensive academic case study of barrio group dynamics in a major Texas city to date. This is a sociological work on the history of barrio gangs in San Antonio and other large Texas cities to the present day. It examines the century-long evolution of urban barrio subcultures using public archives, oral histories, old photos, and other forms of qualitative data. The study gives special attention to the barrio gangs’ “heyday,” from the 1940s through the 1960s, comparing their attributes to those of modern groups. It illustrates how social and technological changes have affected barrio networking processes and the intensity of the street lifestyle over time. Intergenerational shifts and the tension that accompanies such changes are also central themes in the book. Few other places are so conducive to such historical exploration as is San Antonio. Street ignobility in the barrio no doubt mirrors processes found in other Chicano communities in Texas and the Southwest. The gang contexts in major Chicano population centers have lengthy historical bases rooted in weak opportunity structures, oppression, and discrimination. This work shows that participation in street violence, drug selling, and other parts of the informal economy are functional adaptations to the social structure; the forces propelling the formation of barrio gangs are not temporary social phenomena.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The story involves the liaison between a Harlem woman, who is a bit older, and plumper, than she would like others to notice, and the younger man she has picked up in the park. It is her birthday, and they have come to her apartment for, she hopes, a night of unbridled passion. But her guest proves to be more than she has bargained for; a self-styled orator and revolutionary "genius," whose mission is to "save" the black race. At first, she tries to humor him into a more relaxed and receptive mood, but gradually she becomes aware that her visitor is not only very intense but perhaps slightly unbalanced as well. And, despite her unsatisfied needs, she determines to send him on his way--a decision which brings on a telling, revealing exchange and for the lady, a sense of self-respect she thought she had long since lost."--Back cover.

Book Synopsis Ceremonies in Dark Old Men by : Lonne Elder, III
Download or read book Ceremonies in Dark Old Men written by Lonne Elder, III and published by Hill and Wang. This book was released on 1969 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ceremonies in Dark Old Men, a classic of American theater, is the poignant story of a family in 1950s Harlem. In timeless prose, Lonne Elder explores the discontent of a generation that has grown old before its time, and the determination of the next generation to avoid such a fate. In the play, Russel B. Parker is a prodigal father and failed barber who exists on memories and "ceremonies" for survival. He spends his time recounting atmospheric tales of his life in vaudeville and tells, in darkly comic detail, about his days on the chain gang. Just beneath the surface of Elder's work lie the terrors of day-to-day life in a racist society--never directly mentioned, but always simmering unforgettably. Ceremonies in Dark Old Men had its debut Off-Broadway in 1969. It received enthusiastic reviews and moved into an extended run. Since its first performance, the play has been produced numerous times both on television and on the stage, with the leads being played by an honor roll of actors, including Laurence Fishburne, Denzel Washington, and Billy Dee Williams.
