Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trees That Grow the Fruit That Sells Some propagators use the wood pruned from nursery stock to get their supply of buds. Others cut buds from bearing orchards, but make no selection of the trees which bear the most fruit. It has been pretty thor oughly demonstrated that when young trees are propagated by buds or grafts, they have the same bearing characteristics as the tree from which the budding or grafting wood was cut. If this tree is a regular bearer of heavy cr0ps. Of fine fruit, the young trees in all probability will be the same. If this tree is a shy bearer, or produces inferior fruit, the young trees have very little chance of ever becoming profitable orchard units. You can notice it in your own orchard and neighborhood - one Baldwin or York Imperial tree will bear twice as many apples as another standing alongside it, and better Apples, too. This condition applies as well to Peaches and' Pears and other fruits. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. How he made so prosperous a living none of his acquaintances could understand. Those who were in the ivory trade with him knew that he owed his good in come to a rare capacity for judging tusks by touch. It was a gift, inherited, as he believed, from his father, but more probably communi cated by imperceptible training while they were in business together. As the family grew, so did his business, and this was fortunate, for Mims had no money nor had he any private fortune. The men who travelled up and down with him every morning and evening between Ellerslie and the city used to tell each other that they ought to offer him sympathy rather than congratulations as each new baby arrived. Yet they could not see that his responsibilities made any mark upon him. He regarded children in exactly the same way as he regarded the weather; both came as it pleased some Superior Power; he had no control over either. Such a treatment would require a book in itself. The student has been re ferred to his local experimental station and college of agriculture for information concerning the Insects and diseases Of importance in his community. Emphasis in this book has been placed rather on the mechanics Of the use and application Of materials for control, including a full discussion Of machinery. Likewise, information concerning varieties and variety descriptions is available from so many authoritative sources that it has not been included here, other than to enumerate the varieties Of commercial importance in the various fruit-growing sections. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evans Specialty Nursery, Arlington, Texas: Special Nut and Fruit Trees, 1922-23 We will not go so fan as to say that we have the best Elberta in the world; but we do say that our trees are grown from buds of the most superior tree of _the variety we have ever seen or heard of - and it is not a sufficient answer to an inquiring mind to say that this particular tree produced superior fruit because of richer soil or otherwise more favorable location; for it stood in a ten-acre orchard where conditions were as nearly alike as possible and no other tree in the orchard produced such fruit. You may be able to buy trees for less money than we will be able to sell you these selected and specially grown ones for, but the best tree is cheapest in the end. Margaret evans. F, Immediately following Elberta (our own introduction.) An Elberta cross that resembles that variety when ripe, but not so While green. Oblong, and more pointed at the apex. Flesh yellow, juicy, and deliciously sweet, by far surpassing the Elberta in quality. Too soft for a good shipping peach, but for home use, to be eaten out of hand, can not be surpassed. Tree does not grow as large as some other kinds, but it is a consistent bearer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stahelin's "Vitality" Fruit Plants and Trees, 1931 We feel that a little word of explanation is due here. Being located in one of the northern states of the U. S., we can and do produce a full line of nursery stock that is hardy. Now, everyone knows that you cannot take corn from the South and bring it North and get a crop from it. First, it is not hardy; second, it requires too long a growing season. The same reasoning applies to plants, trees or other nursery stock. Our location in Michigan and our close proximity to the lake, which tempers our Winters, is one of our biggest assets. We can ship early, usually the latter part of March and our climate is such that our nursery stock is practically dormant and has no green leaves by May lst. Customers receiving our straw berry plants should remember this. When your strawberries are green and full of blossoms, Stahelin's plants are still dormant, hardly any green foliage showing. They will stand shipment for thousands of miles and arrive in perfect condition. All this is due to our location, our expert method of growing, which helps to make a hardy, enormous producing strain of plants and trees. During the summer pinch back the canes, or cut off with a knife when three feet from the ground. This will make them grow stocky and make branches. They should also be well pruned in winter. This applies both to the points of beauty and usefulness - but the trees must be properly selected, planted right and well cared for. These - matters have not had enough attention in the past. Nowadays, however, people are coming to understand that orchards will not take care of themselves any more than will vegetable gardens. Varieties, and methods of culture as well, have been steadily improved. Then, too, people are using fruit in greater quantity, year by year, and are naturally led to ask themselves why should we buy what can just as well be raised at home?
