Book excerpt: Lexicon of Tamil Literature is a reference-dictionary of Tamil literature of South India from its early beginnings more than 2000 years ago until the present time (ca. 1980). It includes in the order of Roman alphabet names and short biographies of authors, lists of their works, anonymous literary works and most important matters of Tamil prosody, rhetoric and poetics. Whenever available, bibliographic data are given with individual entries in selection. Brief contents and evaluative statements are given with literary works of greater importance, whether ancient or modern. An introduction is included. The work is the first of its kind in a non-Indian language. It is an indispensable source of data and work of reference for Tamil literature in particular, and for the totality of Indic literatures in general.
Book Synopsis Literary Techniques in Old Tamil Caṅkam Poetry by : Eva Wilden
Download or read book Literary Techniques in Old Tamil Caṅkam Poetry written by Eva Wilden and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2006 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study is a step towards an historical and philologicaldescription of the founding literary tradition of Southern India. This so-called Cankam literature was composed around the beginning of the common era in a language today known as "Classical Tamil". Ten anthologies of its poetry have survived. Its literary techniques and their presuppositions are presented here in detail on the basis of an analysis of one of these anthologies, the Kur-untokai, which is a collection of 401 short love poems. While the introduction and the last chapter, on poetic style, are also meant for the general student of literature, the second and third chapters will be of interest mainly to specialists. These deal with syntax (especially particle syntax) and with the poetological background of the poetry. The formal features described include the use of formulae; the organisation of a poetic universe in terms of themes, topoi and motifs; syntactic types, such as circular construction; rhetorical fi gures, such as metaphors, similes and insets; poetic ambiguity achieved through the use of a symbolic code; puns; and intertextual allusions.

Book Synopsis Tamil Heroic Poetry by : K. Kailasapathy
Download or read book Tamil Heroic Poetry written by K. Kailasapathy and published by Hachette India. This book was released on 2023-07-19 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An elegant and thorough examination of the riches of Sangam poetry In this acclaimed comparative study, K. Kailasapathy, the celebrated Sri Lankan academic and critic, introduces and interprets ancient Tamil poems and examines the stylistic heritage, themes and motifs pervading Sangam poetry while building the literary corpus's bridge to heroic poetry in other languages - most notably Greek. He identifies the formulaic expression, stock phrases and overarching sensibilities pervasive in the poems and, going much against the popular grain, expands on the notion that oral verse-making is central to Sangam poetry. A nod to Milman Parry, this deeply necessary exploration of our neglected past is an engaging and accessible discourse on one of our most fertile literary ages and, with much agility, connects the dots in studying early Tamil poetry for a modern reader.
Book Synopsis Conservation Conundrum by : T. SEKAR
Download or read book Conservation Conundrum written by T. SEKAR and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2017-12-28 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like to walk through one of the hathivanas (elephant forests) maintained by Mauryan king Chandragupta? Wish to be part of the royal dinner of a Mughal Emperor, with the palate containing a variety of forty meat dishes? Desirous of having a glimpse of the head on the shield and full-mount trophies of tigers and lions, decorating the halls and walls of the military lounges, lavish palaces and royal houses of the British Raj? Conservation Conundrum - Journey of India’s wildlife through ages is a pen-picture of the glory and good times, the trials and tribulations, persecution and perturbation of the country’s wild animals in its recorded history. The author has captured the theme through a historian’s kaleidoscope, where from a period of plenty in the ancient India, animal numbers plummeted to its lowest, when the country was into its first two decades of independence. From a situation of no-hope, how most of the iconic wildlife species registered a turn around and smart recovery in a span of half a century, despite the odds working against them forms the central thread. The author takes the reader through the pages in finding an answer to the usual dilemma, as to whether it is human need and interest or the future of the wild denizens that is important to a developing nation like India.
