It is co-owned by Eboni Washington, a teacher from Bronx, NY and Michele Simmons, a counselor from Washington, DC. The way that we prepare food is just as important as the food itself. Our food is soul food because it comes from our hearts. We specialize in vegan, soy, gluten and chemical free food, plant based skin and hair care products, and holistic youth development and behavior management strategies. Our goal is for Vegan Traphouse to be a catalyst for positive transformation through food, community activism, and culture. The Traphouse Vegan, Lifestyle Guide, is more than a cookbook. It is written specifically for low income families who live in areas bereft of fresh and healthy foods. Book excerpt: In the same way we think of vegetarians as people who don t eat meat, we tend to think of vegans as people who give up more- animal products, including meat, fish, seafood, eggs, and dairy. Vegans, however, think of themselves as people who consciously choose to do something. They respect life in all forms- human, animal, and planetary. Many vegans choose to buy cosmetics and personal care products that don t contain animal byproducts and aren t tested on animals. Becoming a vegan is a real lifestyle, not just a way to eat! In The Complete Idiot s Guide to Vegan Living, authors Beverly Lynn Bennett (better know as the Vegan Chef) and Ray Sammartano provide a complete guide to living vegan style - and the focus is on compassion for all, good health, and great eating!

Book excerpt: A Complete Guide To A Cruelty Free Lifestyle Eating vegan can come with a lot of little lifestyle changes, but some of them are very important while others may come down to a matter of preference. Preference should have nothing to do with making sure that you get every vitamin and mineral you should have on a daily basis. Unfortunately, a few too many vegans may easily neglect this aspect of veganism, and later on in life or throughout the course of their diets they begin to encounter some health issues that they could have easily prevented with a little bit of preparation. A vegan lifestyle is not without its risks. Some people might approach it with the attitude that cutting animals out of their diets and calling it a day is good enough. However, there are some unfortunate differences that can result when we make a change like cutting out animal proteins from our diets. One particularly important thing to consider is a source of B vitamins. B vitamins are important. Without enough of them, we can begin to feel sluggish and depressed, lack in energy, find it difficult to concentrate and focus on things that are important to us, or even cause ourselves nervous system damage or anemia. B12 in particular is difficult for vegans to obtain because there are not a lot of vegan approved sources of this vitamin. If you are choosing to go vegan, this is a very important vitamin to consider. Most people also worry about your protein when you are living a vegan diet, but most people don’t come up and ask you where you are getting your iron and your B12 vitamins. Maybe they should change the question! That way, it will be at the forefront of your mind every day to make sure you are getting good sources of these vital nutrients. It can be very beneficial to live a vegan lifestyle. If you find it to be a difficult transition, remembering that you are supporting the concept of a better way of life with the choices you make should provide a boon. Remember that we hold the future in our hands . With It is extremely worthwhile to go vegan, but make sure you are doing it in a way that is beneficial to you in all aspects, and don’t deprive your body of some of the most important things it needs to stay healthy

Book excerpt: Adhering to a vegetarian diet is central to many religions. Buddhism shows kindness to all living things and its believers hold many animals to be scared for what they provide to humans whether it is milk or as work animals to help plow fields. Followers of Chris- tianity had different views when it came to being a vegetarian. Chris-tians believe that humans reign over all other living things on Earth meaning that they believe that animals are here for their use whether that means as beasts of burden or as a food source. However, that does not mean that all Christians are carnivores. Throughout history, different sects of Christians have broken with the mainstream beliefs and preached a vegetarian lifestyle. Vegetarianism played a key role for Christians in Eastern Europe; among these groups were the Bogomils that rose up in the 900's in what is now modern day Bulgaria. The Bogomils were seen as heretics because they spoke out against what they saw as the excesses of monasteries and the Eastern Orthodox Church; they rejected the physical world and forswore the consumption of eggs, meat, and cheese that led them to lead a vege-tarian lifestyle.
