Book Synopsis National Energy Transportation Study by :
Download or read book National Energy Transportation Study written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on changing transport patterns caused by the expected shift from oil to coal, assessing the ability of the Nation's transportation systems to carry future volumes of coal, petroleum, natural gas and nuclear materials. Trends in energy commodity transportation are predicted. Areas are identified where capacity problems might require expanded facilities. Also assessed are possible financial, social, safety and environmental constraints on the capability of the system to meet identified needs. Focus is on 1985 and 1990 with few problems anticipated by 1985 and none that would seriously impede energy transportation.
Book Synopsis Hidden Costs of Energy by : National Research Council
Download or read book Hidden Costs of Energy written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-06-26 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the many benefits of energy, most of which are reflected in energy market prices, the production, distribution, and use of energy causes negative effects. Many of these negative effects are not reflected in energy market prices. When market failures like this occur, there may be a case for government interventions in the form of regulations, taxes, fees, tradable permits, or other instruments that will motivate recognition of these external or hidden costs. The Hidden Costs of Energy defines and evaluates key external costs and benefits that are associated with the production, distribution, and use of energy, but are not reflected in market prices. The damage estimates presented are substantial and reflect damages from air pollution associated with electricity generation, motor vehicle transportation, and heat generation. The book also considers other effects not quantified in dollar amounts, such as damages from climate change, effects of some air pollutants such as mercury, and risks to national security. While not a comprehensive guide to policy, this analysis indicates that major initiatives to further reduce other emissions, improve energy efficiency, or shift to a cleaner electricity generating mix could substantially reduce the damages of external effects. A first step in minimizing the adverse consequences of new energy technologies is to better understand these external effects and damages. The Hidden Costs of Energy will therefore be a vital informational tool for government policy makers, scientists, and economists in even the earliest stages of research and development on energy technologies.

Download or read book Analysis of Requirements and Constraints on the Transport of Energy Materials written by and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers the degree to which transportation may be a constraint on the attainment of the goals of Project Independence and the effectiveness of various governmental policies in lifting any constraints. The report analyzes the development of new energy sources and the change in the manner of use of old energy sources that must take place in order to transport such materials as coal, gas, petroleum and products from the source to intermediate processing and thence to the end use consumer. Four primary modes of transportation are considered: truck, rail, waterway and pipeline.

Download or read book Transportation of Energy Materials written by National Research Council (U.S.). Transportation Research Board and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conference on the transportation of energy materials grew out of a concern for the new issues arising in the transport of energy materials caused by the need for new sources of fuel and the escalating prices in energy. Availability also necessitated an intensive discussion of the movement of these materials, now and in the future, to gain from further insights, to stimulate needed research, and in general to obtain a better perspective of the issues to be confronted. The meeting is intended to examine transport of energy materials by all existing surface modes and new technologies which may provide the basis for additional modes in the future.
