Book excerpt: Personal experiences mold our characters and shape our futures in myriad ways, and the people we have the gift of meeting along the way affect us forever. In this book, William G. ¿Billy¿ Coward tells his life¿s story through his involvement in sports over more than seven decades. From his beginning as a young African-American man growing up in Washington, DC prior to racial integration to his later successes as an athlete and coach in an ever-changing country, Coward¿s ability to encourage driven people to achieve their potentials sets him apart from the average man. Through this detailed account of his life before and through high-school sports, as a batboy for a Negro League baseball team, a lifeguard at several pools throughout his life, a competitive college athlete in multiple sports, and later as a coach for countless teams and an adult athlete himself, Coward never falters in his constant goal of success, cooperation, and respect of all people. Acknowledging the achievements of the athletes he has known throughout his life, we see just how fortunate and determined Coach Coward has been.

So when the festival is threatened with cancellation, she comes up with an idea: a new slogan and advertising campaign topped off with a metal menorah large enough to fill the center of town. But even though her heart and dreams are large, the committee’s budget constraints threaten to stop her grand plans right in their tracks. Famous metal sculptor Isaac Lieberman also loves Hanukkah. But his vision of a perfect Hanukkah isn’t a commercial community event—it’s spending time with family, following age-old traditions. He’s not interested in the festival, no matter how many times his grandmother, his bubbe, asks him to contribute one of his sculptures. Then Sarah comes tumbling into his life…can she change his mind about more than just the holidays?

Book excerpt: All aboard for a delicious ride on nine legendary railway journeys! Meals associated with train travel have been an important ingredient of railway history for more than a century—from dinners in dining cars to lunches at station buffets and foods purchased from platform vendors. For many travelers, the experience of eating on a railway journey is often a highlight of the trip, a major part of the “romance of the rails.” A delight for rail enthusiasts, foodies, and armchair travelers alike, Food on the Move serves up the culinary history of these famous journeys on five continents, from the earliest days of rail travel to the present. Chapters invite us to table for the haute cuisine of the elegant dining carriages on the Orient Express; the classic American feast of steak-and-eggs on the Santa Fe Super Chief; and home-cooked regional foods along the Trans-Siberian tracks. We eat our way across Canada’s vast interior and Australia’s spectacular and colorful Outback; grab an infamous “British railway sandwich” to munch on the Flying Scotsman; snack on spicy samosas on the Darjeeling Himalayan Toy Train; dine at high speed on Japan’s bullet train, the Shinkansen; and sip South African wines in a Blue Train—a luxury lounge-car featuring windows of glass fused with gold dust. Written by eight authors who have traveled on those legendary lines, these chapters include recipes from the dining cars and station eateries, taken from historical menus and contributed by contemporary chefs, as well as a bounty of illustrations. A toothsome commingling of dinner triangles and train whistles, this collection is a veritable feast of meals on the move.

Book excerpt: This book is about my fathers 10 month around the world travel adventure in 1936. He visited some 20 countries, traveling by bicycle loaded with camping gear, second and third class train, bus, ship, motor lorry, riverboat, and hiking. His greatest adventure was a 500 mile hike along the Burma Trail from Burma through China to Hanoi. Wherever my father went he aroused the curiosity of the local people and the suspicions of the authorities. He recorded pre WW-II viewpoints of the towns' people and fellow travelers on social, political, educational, and economic matters. He bedded down in guesthouses, youth hostels, YMCAs, or camped out. He recorded some of his story with over 1,000 photographs. Over a 15 year period, I transcribed my fathers handwritten diaries. There were many duplicated entries because much of his diaries consisted of letters home to family and friends. Most of these letters contained accounts about the same thing, but each either had a different twist or some new activity altogether. My biggest job was to eliminate all the duplication, fit together the different twists, and to put it all together into a logical timeline. In my first effort to transcribe I used a manual typewriter, before the personal computer was available. About the time I finished, I bought my first PC, an IBM XT. I re-entered all my typewritten pages into the computer. As the years went on I got better and better computers, copying my fathers adventure into each, making more changes along the way. Eventually I put together a 31 chapter book with 166 photographs. My father (and my mother) passed away in 1994. It had always been his wish to find a way to publish his travels so that others may see the world as he saw it. Larry S. Kramm Antioch, California July 1999
