Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Town and City of Waterbury, Connecticut, From the Aboriginal Period to the Year Eighteen Hundred and Ninety-Five, Vol. 1 The narrative of the colonial and revolutionary periods is the result of an independent study by Miss Prichard of the original sources, including documents that have come to light since Dr. Bronson's History was written. This study was pursued with but little reference to Bronson, although the value of his labors was known from the beginning. It ought to be understood, however, that it was not the purpose of the author or the editor to super sede the earlier work; on the contrary, certain subjects to which Bronson devoted special attention are in this History passed over lightly for that reason. It may be added that Dr. Bronson, to the hour of his death, was deeply interested in the present enterprise. Download or read book The Town and City of Waterbury, Connecticut, Vol. 3 written by Joseph Anderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 936 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Town and City of Waterbury, Connecticut, Vol. 3: From the Aboriginal Period to the Year Eighteen Hundred and Ninety-Five The Baptist and Methodist movements, whatever their origin may have been, were American; they found their chief field and did their chief work amidst the native American population. The same is true of Adventism, half a century later. But the establish ment of Roman Catholicism and Lutheranism in the town must be explained in a different way, - as a natural result of the Irish immi gration in the one case and the later German and Swedish immigrations in the other. The Irish immigration has been so extensive, the irish-american stock so productive, the Roman Catholic church so strong in its grasp upon its own people, and the administration of its affairs so thorough and successful, that it is now not only larger than any other denomination in the town, it probably exceeds all the others taken together. Of late years its place in the community has been still further strengthened by the incoming of immigrants from southern Europe and from Canada, and by the establishment of Roman Catholic schools and societies. Download or read book Waterbury Irish written by Janet Maher and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-07 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hard work of nineteenth-century Irish immigrants in Waterbury helped place the city on the map as the Brass Capital of the World. In the early years of immigration, the Irish still had a hard road before them, filled with prejudice and social exclusion. Irish Catholics would hold Mass in secret, but eventually beautiful churches were built, attracting the most revered clergy in Connecticut. Soon Irish and Irish Americans established themselves as city leaders and professionals in the community. Dr. Charles A. Monagan was a founding member of St. Mary's Hospital, while his son John later became mayor. Some achieved fame through their excellence in sports, such as Roger Connor, whose long-standing record for career home runs was unbeatable until finally broken by the one and only Babe Ruth. Detailed research and oral histories from living descendants bring to light the remarkable Waterbury Irish legacy.
