Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a Bible study some years ago, our teacher asked each one in the Bible study to write a lesson on any topic we chose and take turns, each doing one study per week. I chose the Twenty-Third Psalm. My information comes from scripture, online information, and Bible studies. At the time, I didn't know how much information could come from studying that one psalm. So the day came when it was my turn to present the information to the class. When Psalm 23 was read, some people cried because they saw how we, like sheep, are loved. God sings songs over my head, your head. We have no idea how much the Good Shepherd loves us and will do anything to keep us close to him even if it means discipline that hurts. But He disciplines those He loves. For instance, He takes his staff and uses its crook to pull back a sheep from a steep cliff. It hurts the sheep at the time but not so much as incurring cuts and bruises from falling down a steep hill. We, like sheep, go astray, thinking we are in control of our lives, but we are not. Once the Good Shepherd gets our attention, He takes care of us.

Download or read book Vesper Flights written by Helen Macdonald and published by Grove Press. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times–bestselling author of H is for Hawk explores the human relationship to the natural world in this “dazzling” essay collection (Wall Street Journal). In Vesper Flights, Helen Macdonald brings together a collection of her best loved essays, along with new pieces on topics ranging from nostalgia for a vanishing countryside to the tribulations of farming ostriches to her own private vespers while trying to fall asleep. Meditating on notions of captivity and freedom, immigration and flight, Helen invites us into her most intimate experiences: observing the massive migration of songbirds from the top of the Empire State Building, watching tens of thousands of cranes in Hungary, seeking the last golden orioles in Suffolk’s poplar forests. She writes with heart-tugging clarity about wild boar, swifts, mushroom hunting, migraines, the strangeness of birds’ nests, and the unexpected guidance and comfort we find when watching wildlife.
Book Synopsis A Commentary on Micah by : Bruce K. Waltke
Download or read book A Commentary on Micah written by Bruce K. Waltke and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this masterful commentary, respected biblical scholar Bruce Waltke carefully interprets the message of the prophet Micah, building a bridge between Micah's ancient world and our life today. Waltke's Commentary on Micah quickly distinguishes itself from other commentaries on this book by displaying an unprecedented exegetical thoroughness, an expert understanding of historical context, and a keen interest in illuminating the contribution of Micah to Christian theology. Tackling hard questions about date and authorship, Waltke contends that Micah himself wrote and edited the nineteen sermons comprising the book. Waltke's clear analytical outline leads readers through the three cycles of Micah, each beginning with an oracle of doom and ending with an oracle of hope, decisively showing that hope wins over doom. Learned yet amazingly accessible, combining scholarly erudition with passion for Micah's contemporary relevance, this book will well serve teachers, pastors, and students alike.

Book Synopsis Chemicals and Christians by : Martha McLaughlin
Download or read book Chemicals and Christians written by Martha McLaughlin and published by . This book was released on 2019-12-11 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Just because you're set apart doesn't mean you're set aside." Martha McLaughlin and her husband served as international missionaries for 10 years, ministering in a variety of ways, including helping to identify unreached people groups. When her physical breakdown forced them to return to the USA, she feared it was the end of her missionary journey. But instead, God told her, "Just because you're set apart doesn't mean you're set aside." Today Martha feels called to try to help a different kind of unreached people group: the isolated sufferers of toxic illness, a growing but largely invisible population. Yet, like the canaries once used in coal mines to detect poisonous gases, they are a wake-up call to the effects of the thousands of chemicals used daily in our modern society. Expertly researched and written, Chemicals and Christians: Compassion and Caution is loaded with valuable information and biblical counsel for hope and avoiding harm in our increasingly chemicalized environment. It provides steps for biblical health management, offers practical resources, and shows Christians ways to help. "Using safe approaches regarding chemicals is not only Christian but is also good sense." --Dr. Grace Ziem, MD, MPH Johns Hopkins, MSc and DRPH Harvard.
