Book excerpt: A retired fireman is brutally murdered in the small village of Cromar, East Sussex. His son then starts to receive mysterious messages after his father's funeral, which unsettle him, and it seems that this killer has also eliminated his cousin when her body is discovered. The perpetrator is not satisfied with just tormenting him, but also embarks on the same strategy with the local police. Detective Inspector Stuart Willis, the investigating officer, is put under severe scrutiny when the serial killer starts delivering messages to his superiors, which undermine his capabilities and imply that he is a corrupt police official. At the same time, a private investigator, Conrad Jessoric, is engaged by the widow of a wealthy newspaperman to investigate the killing of her husband and a missing one hundred thousand pounds. In doing so, he unwittingly takes on a paranoid schizophrenic as a future partner, which coincides with an escalation of murders in the East Sussex area. To complicate matters further, a local couple appear to have committed suicide by jumping off the cliff at Beachy Head. Willis has his work cut out trying to establish how many deaths are connected and to find the killer who is continuously tormenting him. Another sizzling thriller from the pen of Alex Binney.

Book excerpt: Monsieur Arthur Valois Dourville de Montrissart was a short cynical man who distrusted everything and demeaned almost everybody. The lack of refinement in his personality, his devious attitude betrayed his self proclaimed aristocratic name of Valois Dourville de Montrissart. Arthur was far to be a chivalrous knight. As the owner of a classy French restaurant Le Cerisier, he displayed these characteristics to the disgust of his dedicated employees. For many ordinary working men, Arthurs hostile management was enough reason to quit, just as Leansing, Camille and chef Picharon did. But not Pierre Choucart, for he was no ordinary man. His inspiration was drawn from Mahatma Gandhi who preached peaceful means to British rule. Pierre was ready to accept the beatings. Moreover, Choucarts great sense of humor was the very quality that kept him working in such an offensive environment. What mattered to him most was that he earned the respect, the friendship of his customers with his good nature and honesty. This very trait infuriated Arthur, thus Pierre became his bte noire. Even that a great portion of his life was spent working for a tyrant, no better than le petit Napoleon, Pierre did not have the slightest regret. If this was a fairy tale, the humble Pierre Choucart lived happily ever after with a conscience that has forgiven and a mind that reminisce only the funny, the warm-hearted memories at Le Cerisier.

Book Synopsis Beckett, Lacan, and the Voice by : Llewellyn Brown
Download or read book Beckett, Lacan, and the Voice written by Llewellyn Brown and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The voice traverses Beckett’s work in its entirety, defining its space and its structure. Emanating from an indeterminate source situated outside the narrators and characters, while permeating the very words they utter, it proves to be incessant. It can alternatively be violently intrusive, or embody a calming presence. Literary creation will be charged with transforming the mortification it inflicts into a vivifying relationship to language. In the exploration undertaken here, Lacanian psychoanalysis offers the means to approach the voice’s multiple and fundamentally paradoxical facets with regards to language that founds the subject’s vital relation to existence. Far from seeking to impose a rigid and purely abstract framework, this study aims to highlight the singularity and complexity of Beckett’s work, and to outline a potentially vast field of investigation.

This book was released on 2023-07-25 with total page 1252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lively, fast-flowing.... the voiciest translation of the novel thus far. [Katz] writes at the fever pitch of speech, unleashing the speed and the chaos of the original." —Jennifer Wilson, The New Yorker A monumental new translation—the first in more than twenty years—of Russia’s greatest family drama, rendered with all the passion, humor, and soul of the original. Dostoevsky’s final, greatest novel, The Brothers Karamazov, paints a complex and richly detailed portrait of a family tormented by its extraordinarily cruel patriarch, Fyodor Pavlovich, whose callous decisions slowly decimate the lives of his sons—the eponymous brothers Karamazov—and lead to his violent murder. In the aftermath of the killing, the brothers contend with dilemmas of honor, faith, and reason as the community closes in on the murderer in their midst. Acclaimed translator Michael R. Katz renders this masterpiece’s nuanced and evocative storytelling in a vibrant, signature prose style that captures all the power of Dostoevsky’s original—the clever humor, the rich emotion, the passion and the turmoil—and that will captivate and unsettle a new generation of readers.
