Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the opening of the twentieth century, Britain's influence in Argentina was at its peak and resembled, in certain ways, its position in countries such as Australia and Canada. Yet, in the following generation, British preeminence was persistently threatened, and Argentina's prospects plunged into a seemingly irreversible decline. Why did the Anglo-Argentine connection, which appeared so mutually beneficial in 1900, become strained to the breaking point by 1939? This book shows that Britain's efforts in Argentina were usually more pathetic than imperialistic, but that in periods of difficulty (1914 to 1918, and in the 1930s), British pressure unwittingly helped into power a political party that brought destruction, not merely to British interests, but also to the Argentine Republic's future promise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the interactions of producers, sellers and consumers of meat across the world, Richard Perren elucidates aspects of the evolution of the international economy and the part played by the investment of capital and the enterprise of individuals. The study utilises the government reports and papers issued by all countries involved in the meat trade, including North and South America, Australia, New Zealand and Britain. Beginning in the nineteenth century allows a comprehensive analysis of how an efficient meat exporting industry was built. The industry required investment, which was part of the general process of economic development. Perren focuses on the nature of the firms involved with the trade, the part played in the industry's development by foreign investment and the encouragement given by governments. Close attention is also paid to the stimulus of war, the impact of animal health and food hygiene regulations on producers and the competing demands of interest groups involved in the food businesses. By taking an historical as well as a contemporary approach, the book contributes to the current discussion on the effectiveness of animal and meat inspection in identifying farm livestock diseases such as tuberculosis and BSE. This study advances our knowledge of the process of food distribution in the industrialising and post-industrial economies, and leads to a comprehensive understanding of an important component of the international food chain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking book examines the multifaceted dynamics between copyright law and music borrowing within a rich diversity of music genres from across the world. It evaluates how copyright laws under different generic conventions may influence, or are influenced by, time-honoured creative borrowing practices. Leading experts from around the world scrutinise a carefully selected range of musical genres, including pop, hip-hop, jazz, blues, electronic and dance music, as well as a diversity of region-specific genres, such as Jamaican music, River Plate Tango, Irish folk music, Hungarian folk music, Flamenco, Indian traditional music, Australian indigenous music, Maori music and many others. This genre-conscious analysis builds on a theoretical section in which musicologists and lawyers offer their insights into fundamental issues concerning music genre categorisation, the typology of music borrowing and copyright law's ontological struggle with musical borrowing in theory and practice. The chapters are threaded together by a central theme, ie, that the cumulative nature of music creativity is the result of collective bargaining processes among many 'musicking' parties that have socially constructed creative music authorship under a rich mix of generic conventions.

Book excerpt: From the hosts of the popular podcast and tv show Men in Blazers, comes their completely scientific, 100% definitive, defend-to-the-death list of the greatest soccer players of all time. Every fan has their own list of the 100 soccer players they consider the greatest ever to play the game. A list based on triumphs, sublime moments of skill, superhuman tenacity, and telenovela-esque backstories. To the list-maker, that 100 feels objective. Unequivocal. An absolute truth. This is one such list. Written with the same signature Men in Blazers humor found in their New York Times bestseller Encyclopedia Blazertannica, and accompanied by Nate Kitch's iconic photographic illustrations, Men in Blazers share the stories of household names like David Beckham and Alex Morgan, along with cult icons such as Garrincha, the Brazilian star of the 1960s who was born with one leg six inches shorter than the other, and Briana Scurry, a trailblazer who paved a path for young Black soccer-playing women. Page by page, you will revel in the depictions of players you adore, discover tales you have never heard, and experience vivid stories of dreams, loyalty, perseverance, creativity, and luck. Together, they form an alternative telling of the history of soccer, tracing the evolution of the men's and women's games around the globe, one unlikely, unbelievable, unforgettable career at a time. Book excerpt: It is possible to present a brief summary of the subjects that the chapters in this book focus on. Ch 1. The Hanke-Krus World Hyperinflation Table first appeared in the authoritative Routledge Handbook of Major Events in Economic History, which was published in 2013. The table contained every country that had ever experienced a hyperinflation – all 56 of them. With this paper, we amend the Table and add a 57th entry: Venezuela. On December 3, 2016, Venezuela’s inflation met all the criteria required to qualify as a hyperinflation. Specifically, Venezuela’s monthly inflation rate exceeded 50 percent per month for 30 consecutive days....

For those interested in early 20th-century travel literature, particularly narratives about South American countries, "The Amazing Argentine" offers a historical perspective on Argentina and the experiences of a traveler during that period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buenos Aires, I imagined, was a city where the dancing never stopped, even in a crisis (in which Argentina always seemed to find itself). I fantasized about dancing tango in the arms of a sexy Latin lover at the end of the world with nothing to think about but my next tango step. I chose safer places to visit, and Argentina stayed on my bucket list. One fine day, I ran out of excuses. I owned a small finca in Alhaurín el Grande near Malaga, Spain and it needed painting. My good friend Brian said to me, ‘You buy the beers amigo, and I will help you paint your casita (house), and we can have some fun doing it.’ It was an offer too good to turn down as I knew Brian was a genius with a paintbrush. We had the best of times painting and bonding, drinking lots of beer and talking nonsense about life. On the second or third day, Brian threw a question at me: ‘What do you think about doing that you have never done before?’ ‘Umm,’ I replied, ‘let me think about that one. Pass me another beer.’ It didn't take me long to say that I always had a desire to visit South America and in particular, Argentina. Little did I know that answering Brian's question would change my life forever. Brian listened to my tales of why I wanted to go to Argentina, and then he knocked me over with a feather! He proceeded to tell me that he had just completed a documentary on the Argentinian footballer, Ossie Ardiles. Brian told me that Ossie had told him that if you want to see what real passion is, you need to see a football match in Argentina. Win or lose, hate it or love it, Ossie said, the passion in Argentinian football is the best and the most 'loco' in the world. Amazingly, about eight weeks after our painting break, we were on a plane bound for Argentina. The plan was to stay for around 6-7 days in Buenos Aires. 18 years later...I am still in Argentina. ******************************************************** BRILLIANT TIMES IN BUENOS AIRES. © DAVID CUMMINGS 2021 A LVXAB Publication.
