Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tides and Kindred Phenomena in the Solar System: The Substance of Lectures Delivered in at the Lowell Institute, Boston, Massachusetts In 1897 I delivered a course of lectures on the Tides at the Lowell Institute in Boston Massachusetts and this book contains the substance of what I then said. The personal form of address appropriate to a lecture is I think, apt to be rather tiresome in a book, and I have therefore taken pains to eliminate all traces of the lecture from what I have written. A mathematical argument is, after all, only organized common sense, and it is well that men of science should not always expound their work to the few behind a veil of technical language, but should from time to time explain to a larger public the reasoning which lies behind their mathematical notation. To a man unversed in popular exposition it needs a great effort to shell away the apparatus of investigation and the technical mode of speech from the thing behind it, and I owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. Lowell, trustee of the Institute, for having afforded me the occasion for making that effort. Book excerpt: A Journey Through Tides is a fully comprehensive text on the history of tides. It brings together geology and oceanography and discusses, in detail, new ideas that have emerged about how tectonics and tides interact. In addition, the book provides an overview of Earth's history, from the perspective of tidal changes, while also highlighting other fascinating phenomena (e.g., solid Earth tides and links between tides and earthquakes). Sections cover an introduction to tides for oceanography students and scientists from other disciplines, cover the Earth's deep time processes, and include several case studies of specific topics/processes that apply to a earth science disciplines. There are many other processes that drive and modify the tides, hence this book also describes why there is a tide, how it has changed since Earth's early days, and what consequences the tides, and changes in the tides, have on other parts of the Earth system. - Presents a fully comprehensive overview on tides that goes beyond the field of oceanography - Provides a state-of-the-art review on science related to tides, a fundamental element in the Earth System that regulates our planet - Explores the limits of our knowledge, including much ongoing research on deep time tides, future tides, tides in exoplanets, and more - Includes a website with tectonic animations and associated tidal evolution videos for interactive learning

Book Synopsis Conceptions of the Watery World in Greco-Roman Antiquity by : Georgia L. Irby
Download or read book Conceptions of the Watery World in Greco-Roman Antiquity written by Georgia L. Irby and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores ancient efforts to explain the scientific, philosophical, and spiritual aspects of water. From the ancient point of view, we investigate many questions including: How does water help shape the world? What is the nature of the ocean? What causes watery weather, including superstorms and snow? How does water affect health, as a vector of disease or of healing? What is the nature of deep-sea-creatures (including sea monsters)? What spiritual forces can protect those who must travel on water? This first complete study of water in the ancient imagination makes a major contribution to classics, geography, hydrology and the history of science alike. Water is an essential resource that affects every aspect of human life, and its metamorphic properties gave license to the ancient imagination to perceive watery phenomena as the product of visible and invisible forces. As such, it was a source of great curiosity for the Greeks and Romans who sought to control the natural world by understanding it, and who, despite technological limitations, asked interesting questions about the origins and characteristics of water and its influences on land, weather, and living creatures, both real and imagined.
