Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brittle Fracture in Steel Structures emphasizes the prevention of brittle fracture in structures fabricated from mild and low alloy steel operating at normal ambient temperatures. This book is divided into seven chapters. Chapter 1 provides the historical background and summarizes numerous case histories of brittle fractures. The nature of the phenomenon and factors that influence brittle fracture, including various methods of testing to determine the notch ductilities of different steels are described in Chapters 2 to 4. The fifth chapter elaborates the design considerations affecting the choice of steel for structural applications. Chapter 6 reviews the main methods for assessing the degree of notch ductility needed for different applications, while Chapter 7 deliberates practical procedures, recommended by the Navy Department Advisory Committee on Structural Steels, for assessing the suitability of different steels for particular applications. This publication is beneficial to metallurgists and welders intending to acquire knowledge of mild steel structures fabricated by welding from rolled steel plates and sections.

This book was released on 1988 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fracture toughness of a 75-mm-thick plate of an LT60 grade steel developed by Algoma Steel has been evaluated by three-point bend tests on specimens 10, 20, and 50 mm thick. The fracture toughness measured by the value of the J-integral at onset of cleavage fracture is higher with thin specimens than with thick ones. The statistical model of Tyson and Marandet describes the temperature dependence, the experimental scatter, and, to a considerable extent, the size dependence of fracture toughness. Loss of constraint in thin specimens may be significant when the size requirements of the ASTM Test Method for J1c, a Measure of Fracture Toughness (E 813-81) are not met.

Book excerpt: First published in 1968, Jacob Feld's Construction Failure has longbeen considered the classic text on the subject. Retaining all ofthe key components of Feld's comprehensive exploration of the rootcauses of failure, this Second Edition addresses a multitude ofimportant industry developments to bring this landmark work up todate for a new generation of engineers, architects, andstudents. In addition to detailed coverage of current design tools, techniques, materials, and construction methods, ConstructionFailure, Second Edition features an entire chapter on theburgeoning area of construction litigation, including a thoroughexamination of alternative dispute resolution techniques. Like theoriginal, this edition discusses technical and procedural failuresof many different types of structures, but is now supplemented withnew case studies to illustrate the dynamics of failure in actiontoday. Jacob Feld knew thirty years ago that in order to learn from ourmistakes, we must first acknowledge and understand them. With thisrevised volume, Kenneth Carper has ensured that Feld'snow-posthumous message will continue to be heard for years tocome. Jacob Feld's comprehensive work on failure analysis has now beenskillfully amended to address current design and constructiontools, materials, and practices. Building on the first edition'speerless examination of the causes and lessons of failure,Construction Failure, Second Edition provides you with expandedcoverage of: * Technical, procedural, structural, and nonstructural failures * Natural hazards, earthworks, soil and foundation problems, andmore * Reinforced, precast and prestressed concrete, steel, timber, masonry, and other materials * Responsibility and litigation concerns, dispute avoidance, andalternative dispute resolution techniques * Construction safety issues * Many different types of structures, including dams andbridges Construction Failure has as much to teach us today as it did thirtyyears ago. This revised volume is an essential resource for designengineers, architects, construction managers, lawyers, and studentsin all of these fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantification of the fracture toughness improvement in a carbon steel due to normalization was investigated using A516-70 (normalized) and A36 (as-rolled) specimens tested at -40 and -46°C, respectively. The A516-70 was in its Charpy transition range and the A36 was on its Charpy lower shelf. This precluded fracture toughness comparison based on ductile tearing. Plasticity considerations excluded the plane strain fracture toughness idealization, and variations in specimen thickness disallowed use of the crack-opening-displacement method. A previously developed three-dimensional finite element (3DFE) estimate of the plastic stress singularity strength at maximum load was used to index fracture toughness which was found insensitive to specimen thickness for those thicknesses examined. The fracture toughness of the normalized steel was 21⁄4 times that of the as-rolled steel. The 3DFE analysis of the plastic stationary crack indicated, for the tougher A516-70, crack profile blunting and curvature reversal. Through-thickness FE mesh refinement revealed a local maximum value of plastic stress singularity strength removed from the plate midthickness, which confirmed observations made by P. S. Theocaris using the method of caustics. The fracture toughness of A516-70 was predicted reasonably well by a Charpy transition toughness correlation. As expected, the transition regime fracture toughness of the A36 steel was not predictable from its Charpy lower shelf energy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2010 the then current European national standards for building and construction were replaced by the EN Eurocodes, a set of pan-European model building codes developed by the European Committee for Standardization. The Eurocodes are a series of 10 European Standards (EN 1990 – EN 1999) that provide a common approach for the design of buildings, other civil engineering works and construction products. The design standards embodied in these Eurocodes will be used for all European public works and are set to become the de-facto standard for the private sector in Europe, with probable adoption in many other countries. This classic manual on structural steelwork design was first published in 1955, since when it has sold many tens of thousands of copies worldwide. For the seventh edition of the Steel Designers' Manual all chapters have been comprehensively reviewed, revised to ensure they reflect current approaches and best practice, and brought in to compliance with EN 1993: Design of Steel Structures (the so-called Eurocode 3).
