Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an encompassing and insightful history of the distinguished 36th Division, which traces back to the 1870s and officially formed for World War I. In the Second World War, the 36th led the first contested Allied landing in Europe and gave the Fifth Army “the key” to Rome. Readers interested in early Texas and Western history, the Civil War, Reconstruction, the world wars, and the continuing debate over the best structure for the American military, will enjoy this exciting adventure story. The 36th Division was formed in 1917, just after the United States entered World War I. The division's documented ancestors in the Texas National Guard, the Texas Volunteer Guard, and the Texas militia trace back to the 1870s. The tradition in which the 36th played so great a part even predates the 1836 defense of the Alamo. This history explores the division's origins and also goes "over there" with the 36th for combat in World War I, chronicles the division in state National Guard service between the world wars, and witnesses its federalization in 1940, followed by combat training in 1940-1942 and combat action in Italy and France during the Second World War.

Book excerpt: The 36th Infantry division saw intense combat in World War One - the story of their training and battles in France is enwoven with rich anecdotes and details of the conflict. Trained in Texas at Camp Bowie, much of the Corps' exercises were orientated around the realities of the Western Front: digging trenches, bayonet practice, and use of the rifle. The arrival of the fresh units of American troops in France in the autumn of 1917 is eye-opening; much of the front was in poor condition, worn down by more than three years of stagnant warfare and horrific losses. The 36th and other divisions invigorated the Allied war effort; their enthusiasm and determination, and their solidarity with the local French citizens, gave hope that victory was near. Yet the 36th and their companion divisions would fight for over a year: the new technology introduced to the front is described, as is the emergence of the Spanish Flu pandemic. The German army mounted a dogged defense, yet their ebbing resources and sheer manpower of the Allies made their situation ever more difficult. Amid the chaos of the front lines, German prisoners are taken on several occasions, with many appearing relieved and glad of their capture. The author, Captain Ben H. Chastaine, accompanies his narrative with some forty photographs, allowing the reader to better visualize the events he evocatively describes.

They Called Them Soldier Boys offers an in-depth study of soldiers of the Texas National Guard's Seventh Texas Infantry Regiment in World War I, through their recruitment, training, journey to France, combat, and their return home. Gregory W. Ball focuses on the fourteen counties in North, Northwest, and West Texas where officers recruited the regiment's soldiers in the summer of 1917, and how those counties compared with the rest of the state in terms of political, social, and economic attitudes. In September 1917 the "Soldier Boys" trained at Camp Bowie, near Fort Worth, Texas, until the War Department combined the Seventh Texas with the First Oklahoma Infantry to form the 142d Infantry Regiment of the 36th Division. In early October 1918, the 142d Infantry, including more than 600 original members of the Seventh Texas, was assigned to the French Fourth Army in the Champagne region and went into combat for the first time on October 6. Ball explores the combat experiences of those Texas soldiers in detail up through the armistice of November 11, 1918.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On November 11, 1918, what was then called “the Great War” ended. The consequences of four years of warfare in Europe reverberated throughout the world, leaving few places untouched. Even though it was far from the scenes of conflict, Texas was forever changed, as historian Gregory W. Ball details in Texas and World War I. This accessible history recounts the ways in which the war affected Texas and Texans politically, socially, and economically. Texas’s position on the United States border with Mexico and on the western edge of the American South profoundly influenced the ways in which the war affected the state, from fears of invasion from the across the Rio Grande—fears that put the state’s significant German American population under suspicion—to the racial tensions that flared when African American soldiers challenged Jim Crow. When thousands of Texas men were drafted into the U.S. Army and the federal government developed a host of training grounds and airfields (many close to the state’s burgeoning cities) in response to U.S. entry into the war, this heavily rural state that had long been outside the national mainstream was had become more “American” than ever before.

Book excerpt: In the infantry, dying is a necessary cost of doing business. If the infantryman survives his first battle, he comes to expect losses because it is the infantry that moves the arrows forward on the map -- and advancement has it price. It is the job of the generals to see that the most is gained with the least loss. If the strategy is sound and the operation goes well, the losses are accepted and the process begins again. There are those times, however infrequent, when everything goes wrong, nothing is gained, and even the most veteran officers and men must search deep within themselves to reconcile the terrible losses. This is the story of such a time and of the men the 36th "Texas" infantry Division who fought in the Rapido River battle but refused to accept the official explanation of why so many were called to such a great sacrifice. In interviewing over one hundred men from the 36th Division who fought at the Rapido, two emotions stand out. First is the loyalty and love that the men have for each other. Theirs is a close bond forged in the cold and mud of the Italian winter, when supplies were short and replacements for heavy losses of men were slow to arrive. One man stated that he was closer to the men in his company than to any of his brothers. This closeness is at the heart of the Rapido story. The second is the bravery of the men who went forward in a battle where victory was less likely than death. This is not a story of just the few whose deeds of heroism stand out but, rather, of the average soldier who was called upon to go about the business of war day after day. They did not flinch from their responsibility and they did not stand out for special recognition. Thus, the emphasis of this book is not upon the politics and personalities within the command structure. Instead, it is the view from the foxhole with a broad overview of the politics and the commanders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The History of the 36th (Ulster) Division' by Cyril Falls is an inspiring historical account about the 36th division, which was an infantry division of the British Army, part of Lord Kitchener's New Army, formed in September 1914. Originally called the Ulster Division, it was made up of mainly members of the Ulster Volunteer Force, who formed thirteen additional battalions for three existing regiments: the Royal Irish Fusiliers, the Royal Irish Rifles and the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. However, regular Officers and Soldiers and men from all around the United Kingdom made up the strength of the Division. The division served from October 1915 on Western Front as a formation of the British Army during the Great War. The book provides a clear picture of the campaign in France and Flanders and the gallant deeds, courage, determination, and sacrifices of the Ulster Division.
