Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Therapeutics of Mineral Springs and Climates This work is divided into two parts. The first is devoted to the study of mineral springs; and as the introductory chapters are concerned with certain general considerations, including the classification of mineral waters, it has been possible to adopt the obviously convenient plan of describing the vast number of mineral-water resorts in alphabetical order, and those resorts that have appeared, for various reasons, to be of minor importance to English invalids have been printed, in smaller type, at the end of each alphabetical group, and described as briefly as possible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Climate of New Mexico and Las Vegas Hot Springs It has been a general observation among the thousands of tourists and invalids that have sojourned and received treatment at the above named resort why the merits of the climate and healing properties of the thermal springs were not brought to the notice of the medical profession and invalids throughout the United States. In response to the above query, the following facts and data are respectfully submitted: New Mexico is situated in latitude 31 degrees, 21 minutes and 37 degrees north; longitude, 103 degrees and 109 degrees west. It contains an area of square miles. Large spurs, branching out from the Rocky mountains, traverse the territory from north to south, reaching in many instances an elevation of from to feet. Immense prairies, between these spurs, form the principal features of New Mexican topography. Las Vegas is in 3 5 degrees 40 minutes north latitude; 28 degrees 15 minutes west from Washington. The Las Vegas Hot Springs (named after the town) are situated six miles from the city of Las Vegas (the Meadows), and is connected by a branch of the atchi son, topeka santa FE railroad. The Springs are beautifully located at the entrance to the Gallinas Canon, and are so nestled among the foot-hills that violent wind and dust storms are escaped. The altitude of the Springs is above sea-level. In seeking out a climate for pulmonary and respiratory diseases the following is imperative. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Climatic Treatment: Including Balneology The chief aim of this book is to place the therapeutics of climate on a secure foundation. With this view the physiology of climate is very fully dealt with; and it yields an adequate basis for a new Classification of Climates. This new classification is especially fitted for the needs of the physician. A concise account of Meteorology, or the factors of climate, from a medical standpoint, precedes the physiological discussion. The well-known works of Buchan, Scott, Hann, Mohn, van Bebber, and Renk have been freely used. Another aim of the book is to enable the physician readily to master the principles of choice in the selection of Baths and Mineral Waters. With this object a therapeutic classification has been adopted. In this portion of the subject the works of Kisch and of Reimer, and especially the encyclopedic Lehrhuch of Glax, have been my constant friends. The materials here put together have been steadily collected during many years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
