Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Community Life for the Mentally Ill" presents a social innovative experiment aimed at providing new and more participating social positions in American society for mental patients. It presents the events that occurred when a courageous group of former chronic mental patients abruptly left a hospital and established their own autonomous sub-society in a large, metropolitan area.In order to complete this experiment, the patients created a small society in the community where discharged patients could live and work. Others evaluated the effects of the newly created society upon the behavior and perceptions of its members, which is also presented here. Both the descriptive and comparative aspects of this study are presented as they occurred in real life. The book is concerned with the medical, economic, sociological, and psychological facets of these former patients' daily lives. The effects of this small society upon the neighborhood and city in which it was located, as well as its effects upon professional persons, are richly explored.Clearly defining a radical departure from standard methods for treating the mentally ill, the authors conclude that such an autonomous society can thrive in the appropriate setting; the ex-patient's chances of employment are increased and the chance of recidivism are reduced; the member's self-esteem is enhanced; treatment costs are greatly reduced; the community adjustment of all members is increased, especially among those who have been hospitalized for a long period. With new guidelines for identifying danger zones in urban settings, this becomes a critical work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the provision of psychiatric services to populations, a task which requires an integrated system of service components. Generally the target population comprises the residents of a specific geographic area, but it may be a special population, such as homeless people or people with AIDS. Community psychiatry does not deal only with the interaction between a patient and a doctor, but with the system of services and interactions that is needed to treat a variety of patients and to provide long-term care, support, and rehabilitation for patients with chronic disorders. Modern community psychiatry is pragmatic rather than doctrinaire; it measures its success in cost-effectiveness rather than by its faithfulness to any particular theoretical model. It stresses interdisciplinary teamwork and the involvement of consumers. These lessons, learned by community psychiatrists working in the public sector over several decades, are now being increasingly applied in the private sector as better organized, managed systems of care are evolving. This book describes the history of public mental health services and the underpinnings of modern community psychiatry in epidemiology, mental health services research, and administration. It then describes the methods and strategies used to provide the range of services that constitute a comprehensive mental health program. The authors discuss the public health principles that underlie community approaches and present the methods used within the several components of a comprehensive service system to address the needs of specific populations, stressing interdisciplinary teamwork and coordination within an integrated service network.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to present an integrated approach to the treatment of the chronic psychiatric patient living in the com munity. This requires that topics as diverse as pharmacokinetics, psychotherapy and community organization be appropriately coor dinated. Such an approach is partly complicated by the wide range of differences among patients, in terms of social skills, intellectual capacity and psychiatric diagnosis. In addition, unclear, insular or overlapping roles of various mental health disciplines further con found integrated treatment efforts. Given such complexity, any single clinician's point of view is sub ject to the distortion inherent in specialization. Too often a volume in the field of mental health focuses either on only one aspect or presents only one clinician's unique perspective of a task that is, in fact, multifaceted. We have tried to avoid this pitfall by having representatives from many of the concerned professions present a variety of treatment approaches and associated issues in one text. Further, the editors have attempted to illuminate the relevant clinical and/or administrative interrelationship between the subjects of each section through a succinct introductory commentary. The book is divided into five sections. The first section represents an attempt to address some of the interactive sociological, psycho logical and pharmacological background issues common to all at tempts at treatment of this population.

Book excerpt: "Maxwell Jones, a psychiatrist well known for his concept of "the therapeutic community," which he and colleagues established for character-disordered patients nearly thirty years ago, has now taken this concept further in light of current systems theory as it is being applied to social organizations. The author cogently argues that psychiatric hospitals have traditionally operated as essentially closed hierarchal systems and that the time has come for change and re-evaluation of the entire medical social system" -- Back cover.
