Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Toleration, Under the Later Stuarts The following essay is one of two to which the Prince Consort Prize was awarded in 1910, and is now published in accordance with the prescribed regulations, With the permission of the examiners I have made certain alterations in preparing it for the press, considerably expanding the first chapter, and adding a final chapter of recapitulation and summary. Also a large number of minor alterations and additions have been made. Thus the essay is somewhat increased in bulk, but it has undergone no essential change in substance or structure. In dealing with the actual controversy between the years 1660 and 1714, as distinct from the intellectual tendencies which led up to it, I have presented the views of writers as far as possible in their own words, and have as a rule tried to bring forward all the main arguments for toleration used in the particular work under consideration, whether they had been employed in an earlier work or not. Book Synopsis Peace, Toleration and Decay by : Martin Paul Sutherland
Download or read book Peace, Toleration and Decay written by Martin Paul Sutherland and published by Paternoster. This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional approaches to early Nonconformity have divided its history at the Toleration Act of 1689. The intellectual history of the movement has largely focused on the ideas of Richard Baxter and John Locke. These conventions present a full understanding of the disunity and decline of the movement in the early eighteenth century. Continuities across the period and the gradual emergence of themes which would feed into evangelicalism have been obscured. The rich theological analysis of Dissent cannot be appreciated without detailed reference to the thought of other contemporary leaders, such as John Howe (1630-1705). His irenic ecclesiology shaped the response to toleration and influenced key leaders in the decades following his death. Crucial shifts in Nonconformist thinking may be traced in his writings and those of his successors, such as Calamy, Watts and Doddridge. This study re-examines a neglected strand of Nonconformist thought and proposes a new understanding of later Stuart dissent. The distinct characteristics of the movement are freshly defined and Dissent is situated in historical continuity between Puritanism and early Evangelicalism. Peace, Toleration and Decay provides a scholarly reinterpretation of an important group in a crucial period of English history. The themes which emerge inform the wider study of English ecclesiology and political theory under the Tutors and Stuarts

Book Synopsis Godly Kingship in Restoration England by : Jacqueline Rose
Download or read book Godly Kingship in Restoration England written by Jacqueline Rose and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-07-21 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The position of English monarchs as supreme governors of the Church of England profoundly affected early modern politics and religion. This innovative book explores how tensions in church-state relations created by Henry VIII's Reformation continued to influence relationships between the crown, Parliament and common law during the Restoration, a distinct phase in England's 'long Reformation'. Debates about the powers of kings and parliaments, the treatment of Dissenters and emerging concepts of toleration were viewed through a Reformation prism where legitimacy depended on godly status. This book discusses how the institutional, legal and ideological framework of supremacy perpetuated the language of godly kingship after 1660 and how supremacy was complicated by the ambivalent Tudor legacy. It was manipulated by not only Anglicans, but also tolerant kings and intolerant parliaments, Catholics, Dissenters and radicals like Thomas Hobbes. Invented to uphold the religious and political establishments, supremacy paradoxically ended up subverting them.

Download or read book Peace, Toleration and Decay written by Martin Sutherland and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional approaches to early Nonconformity have divided its history at the Toleration Act of 1689. The intellectual history of the movement has largely focused on the ideas of Richard Baxter and John Locke. These conventions prevent a full understanding of the disunity and decline of the movement in the early eighteenth century. Continuities across the period and the gradual emergence of themes which would feed into Evangelicalism have been obscured. The rich theological dynamics of Dissent cannot be appreciated without detailed reference to the thought of other contemporary leaders. Among the most important was John Howe (1630-1705). Howe's career stretched from Cromwell to Queen Anne. His irenic ecclesiology shaped the response to toleration and influenced key leaders in the decades following his death. Crucial shifts in Nonconformist thinking may be traced in his writings and those of his successors, such as Calamy, Watts, and Doddridge. As a result, the significance of the division at Salters' Hall in 1719 becomes clearer. This study reexamines a neglected strand of Nonconformist thought and proposes a new understanding of later Stuart Dissent. The distinct characteristics of the movement are freshly defined and Dissent is situated in historical continuity between Puritanism and early Evangelicalism. The monograph thus provides a scholarly reinterpretation of an important group in a crucial period of English history. The themes that emerge inform the wider study of English ecclesiology and political theory under the Tudors and Stuarts.

Book Synopsis Representation and Misrepresentation in Later Stuart Britain by : Mark Knights
Download or read book Representation and Misrepresentation in Later Stuart Britain written by Mark Knights and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-09-28 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this original and illuminating new study, Mark Knights reveals how the political culture of the eighteenth century grew out of earlier trends and innovations. Arguing that the period from 1675 needs to be seen as the second stage of a seventeenth-century revolution that ran on until c.1720, Representation and Misrepresentation in Later Stuart Britain charts the growth of a national political culture and traces the development of the public as an arbiter of politics. In doing so, it uncovers a crisis of public discourse and credibility, and finds a political enlightenment rooted in local and national partisan conflict. The later Stuart period was characterized by frequent elections, the lapse of pre-publication licensing, the emergence of party politics, the creation of a public debt, and ideological conflict over popular sovereignty. These factors combined to enhance the status of the 'public', not least in requiring it to make numerous acts of judgement. Contemporaries from across the political spectrum feared that the public might be misled by the misrepresentations pedalled by their rivals. Each side, and those ostensibly of no side, discerned a culture of passion, slander, libel, lies, hypocrisy, dissimulation, conspiracy, private languages, and fictions. 'Truth' appeared an ambiguous, political matter. Yet the reaction to partisanship was also creative, for it helped to construct an ideal form of political discourse. This was one based on reason rather than passion, on moderation rather than partisan zeal, on critical reading rather than credulity; and an increasing realization that these virtues arose from infrequent rather than frequent elections. Finding synergies between social, political, religious, scientific, literary, cultural, and intellectual history, Representation and Misrepresentation in Later Stuart Britain reinvigorates the debate about the emergence of 'the public sphere' in the later Stuart period.
