Book Synopsis Empire of Terror by : Mark D. Silinsky
Download or read book Empire of Terror written by Mark D. Silinsky and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2021-07 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Empire of Terror Mark D. Silinsky argues that Iran is one of the United States’ deadliest enemies. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, known as the Guards, bring Iran’s sway over much of the greater Middle East and pose a growing existential threat to Western security. Providing insights gained from his thirty-eight years as an analyst in the U.S. defense intelligence community, Silinsky argues that Iran’s political leaders and Guards are animated by aggressive, unforgiving, and totalitarian principles. He draws historical parallels to the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany to compare the intelligence and security services of states with totalitarian aspirations and to illustrate ideological points of intersection—a collectivist mindset, intolerance for political deviation, strongly defined sex roles and hypermasculinity, and a ruthless determination to ferret out and destroy their enemies. Silinsky offers biographies and explanations of the ideology that propels some of Iran’s leaders, with global implications. Profiling the perpetrators, victims, heroes, villains, and dupes, Silinsky shines light on the human and inhumane elements in this distinctly Iranian drama. Although the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany have been defeated and belong to history, the Iranian threat is very much alive.

Book Synopsis The Trumping of America by : Pamela Hines
Download or read book The Trumping of America written by Pamela Hines and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2018-08-02 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trump alone is not to blame... How does it reflect on North American societal values when wealth trumps humanity, selfish individualism trumps compassion, the need to be entertained and to win trumps the truth, and racism and misogyny are rewarded with the most powerful position in the world? The political rise of Donald Trump, from the cutthroat Republican primary process to his move to the White House, has ushered in a new age of politics in the United States. This is a comprehensive analysis of the events surrounding the 2016 presidential election and the unprecedented first year of Donald Trump’s presidency. Pamela Hines highlights the growing distortion of American democracy, which threatens political systems around the world. As a Canadian living just across the border, Hines provides a unique perspective on the international impact of the election; explores the roles of religion, racism, nationalism, and gender bias; and critiques the media and its reckless coverage of Trump’s ascension. The Trump presidency is a wake-up call to citizens of the free world. Democracy is at risk, yet power remains in the hands of the people. This assault on democracy can be curtailed only if voters make informed decisions and understand the consequences of their choices—while they still have the right to choose.
Book Synopsis Bending History by : Martin S. Indyk
Download or read book Bending History written by Martin S. Indyk and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2013-09-04 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time of Barack Obama's inauguration as the 44th president of the United States, he had already developed an ambitious foreign policy vision. By his own account, he sought to bend the arc of history toward greater justice, freedom, and peace; within a year he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, largely for that promise. In Bending History, Martin Indyk, Kenneth Lieberthal, and Michael O’Hanlon measure Obama not only against the record of his predecessors and the immediate challenges of the day, but also against his own soaring rhetoric and inspiring goals. Bending History assesses the considerable accomplishments as well as the failures and seeks to explain what has happened. Obama's best work has been on major and pressing foreign policy challenges—counterterrorism policy, including the daring raid that eliminated Osama bin Laden; the "reset" with Russia; managing the increasingly significant relationship with China; and handling the rogue states of Iran and North Korea. Policy on resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, however, has reflected serious flaws in both strategy and execution. Afghanistan policy has been plagued by inconsistent messaging and teamwork. On important "softer" security issues—from energy and climate policy to problems in Africa and Mexico—the record is mixed. As for his early aspiration to reshape the international order, according greater roles and responsibilities to rising powers, Obama's efforts have been well-conceived but of limited effectiveness. On issues of secondary importance, Obama has been disciplined in avoiding fruitless disputes (as with Chavez in Venezuela and Castro in Cuba) and insisting that others take the lead (as with Qaddafi in Libya). Notwithstanding several missteps, he has generally managed well the complex challenges of the Arab awakenings, striving to strike the right balance between U.S. values and interests. The authors see Obama's foreign policy to date as a triumph of discipline and realism over ideology. He has been neither the transformative beacon his devotees have wanted, nor the weak apologist for America that his critics allege. They conclude that his grand strategy for promoting American interests in a tumultuous world may only now be emerging, and may yet be curtailed by conflict with Iran. Most of all, they argue that he or his successor will have to embrace U.S. economic renewal as the core foreign policy and national security challenge of the future.

Download or read book The Iran Wars written by Jay Solomon and published by Random House. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Qasem Soleimani to the nuclear deal, a deeply reported exploration of Iran’s decades-long power struggle with the United States—in the tradition of Steve Coll’s Ghost Wars and Lawrence Wright’s The Looming Tower “A front-row view of the spy games, assassinations, political intrigue and high-stakes diplomacy that have defined relations with one of America’s most cunning and dangerous foes.”—Joby Warrick, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Black Flags: The Rise of ISIS For more than a decade, the United States has been engaged in a war with Iran as momentous as any other in the Middle East—a war all the more significant as it has largely been hidden from public view. Through a combination of economic sanctions, global diplomacy, and intelligence work, successive U.S. administrations have struggled to contain Iran’s aspirations to become a nuclear power and dominate the region—what many view as the most serious threat to peace in the Middle East. Meanwhile, Iran has used regional instability to its advantage to undermine America’s interests. The Iran Wars is an absorbing account of a battle waged on many levels—military, financial, and covert. Jay Solomon’s book is the product of extensive in-depth reporting and interviews with all the key players in the conflict—from high-ranking Iranian officials to Secretary of State John Kerry and his negotiating team. With a reporter’s masterly investigative eye and the narrative dexterity of a great historian, Solomon shows how Iran’s nuclear development went unnoticed for years by the international community only to become its top security concern. He catalogs the blunders of both the Bush and Obama administrations as they grappled with how to engage Iran, producing a series of both carrots and sticks. And he takes us inside the hotel suites where the 2015 nuclear agreement was negotiated, offering a frank assessment of the uncertain future of the U.S.-Iran relationship. This is a book rife with revelations, from the secret communications between the Obama administration and the Iranian government to dispatches from the front lines of the new field of financial warfare. For readers of Steve Coll’s Ghost Wars and Lawrence Wright’s The Looming Tower, The Iran Wars exposes the hidden history of a conflict whose outcome could have far-reaching geopolitical implications.

Download or read book Attacking Hezbollah's Financial Network written by Committee on Foreign Affairs House of Representatives and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hezbollah is a terrorist group that is based in Lebanon, where it is also a significant political force. It dates back to 1982 when members of Tehran's Revolutionary Guard Corps' Quds Force first deployed in Lebanon's Beqaa Valley. They created, armed, and funded a small force which became Hezbollah. Today, as the leading Iranian proxy, Hezbollah continues to be Iran's front line against Israel. Since its 2006 war with Israel, Hezbollah has dramatically grown its supply of rockets and missiles, allowing it to strike throughout Israel, with much greater precision and force. In cty of Haifa in 2006, Hezbollah fired 10,000 rockets out of an inventory of about 20,000. There were 600 victims from Haifa in the trauma hospital who were being treated as a result of the attacks on civilian neighborhoods. It is 11 years since that period of time, and now, instead of 10,000 rockets and missiles remaining in the inventory, there are 110,000, and they are of increasing sophistication. One observer has written that Hezbollah is now, "more militarily powerful than most North Atlantic treaty organization members." Hezbollah is putting its military power to very effective use. In Syria, its fighters are key to the efforts by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Moscow's efforts to prop up the Assad regime, along with Russian troops and Iran's Revolutionary Guards.

Download or read book Blood Profits written by Vanessa Neumann and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International smuggling has exploded, deepening and accelerating the collaboration of transnational organized crime and terrorist groups. Attacks like the Charlie Hebdo and Bataclan shootings in Paris, the kidnappings and murders by Boko Haram in Nigeria, and the San Bernardino shooting were partially funded by seemingly harmless illegal goods such as cheap cigarettes, smuggled oil, prostitution, fake Viagra, fake designer bags, and even bootleg DVDs. But how can this be? In Blood Profits, Vanessa Neumann, an expert on dismantling illicit trade, explains how purchasing illegal goods translates to supporting organized crime and terrorists. Neumann shows how the effects of the collapsed Iron Curtain, USSR scientists and intelligence agents left without work, regional trade pacts, the dissipation of the East-versus-West mentality, and new-age technology have all led to an intricate network of illegal trade. She leads the reader through a variety of cases, both by geography and by industry (selecting industries where illicit trade is generally poorly understood), before extracting lessons learned into some policy recommendations that we can all embrace.
