Grief-stricken, because her horse Feather had just been diagnosed with a rare equine cancer; in pain with a freshly broken arm of her own; and horrified by the morally bankrupt state of the nation under Donald Trump, Carter begins a conversation with "someone." Herself? Her higher power? Friends who have passed on? The persistent voice names herself (or themselves) "Christepona." Thus begins Carter Heyward's mystical presentation of her ever-deepening passion for justice-love at every level of our life together, from the very personal to the larger social and political contexts. Moving into her grief, Carter wrestles with the problem of evil. She dives into her own anger and hatred, and that of others, and surfaces in enthusiastic bursts of gratitude, joy, and hope.

In most cases, roads only connect two places in the real world. But occasionally, a road crosses the borderline into the unknown. That’s when things can come through, terrible things that lurk by the side of the road for the unwary traveller. A car full of drunk teenagers on their way home from a festival encounter something terrible in the woods of Northwest Germany… Nina delivers newspapers in the wee hours of the night and pays no attention to the pets that go missing in the neighbourhood… or the strange sounds echoing from the sewer grilles… On a lonely country road in northern Spain, a truck driver encounters the ghosts of a terrible past… So buckle up and get ready to meet the horrors that lurk by the side of the road. But be careful, because every encounter with them might be your last… This is a collection of three tales of roadside horror of 9500 words altogether by Hugo winner Cora Buhlert.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A crucial period for the birth of the modern subject, France's 'long eighteenth century' (approximately 1650-1820) was an era marked by the formulation of a new aesthetic and ethical code revolving around the intensification of emotions and the hyperbolic use of weeping. Precisely because tears are not a simple biological fact but rather hang suspended between natural immediacy, on one side, and cultural artifice, on the other, the analysis of crying came to represent an exemplary testing ground for investigations into the enigmatic relations binding the realm of physiology to that of psychology. Thinking About Tears explores how the link between tears and sensibility in France's long eighteenth century helps shed light on the process through which the European emotional lexicon has been built: from viewing tears as governed by the sphere of 'passions' and 'feelings', thinkers began to view crying as first a matter of sensibility and then of sensiblerie (a pathological excess of sensibility), thereby presupposing an intimate connection with the category of 'sentiments'. For this reason, this volume examines not only or even primarily the actual emotion of crying, but also the attempt to think about and explain this feeling. Drawing on a wide range of early modern philosophical, medical, religious, and literary texts-including moral treatises on the passions, medical textbooks, letters, life-writings, novels, and stage-plays-Thinking About Tears reveals another side to a period that has too often been saddled with the cursory label of 'the age of reason'.

Rhea, who is a fashion designer for villains. Rhea, whose favorite hobby is corrupting magical girls. To Prevent Clear Paths When Kendra defected to villainy, she left her friends and family baffled. Her best friend has no clue where the former magical girl is or what she's doing, but she's determined to find out. Even if it means attacking Kendra. But she underestimates the language barrier, she overestimates her own competence at villainy, and she's not used to fighting without magic. So attacking an entire school of magical girls may not be the wisest thing she's ever done. Especially since a villainous fashion designer is watching. To Prevent Warm Welcomes If Rhea's sister is a traitor, she knows what she has to do. She heads to the lair ready to do what's necessary . . . and clueless Tiffany lets her in. Chronos is not delighted. One of Kendra's friends finally gets what she's wanted for a long time. But will it be a dream come true — or will it be a nightmare? To Prevent Cute Mascots There's a magical girl with an evil mascot. Naturally, Kendra has to stop this and beat up the cute, conniving little fuzzball. This might work better if she isn't forced to take Tiffany with her. Florence finally figures out what she wants to do from now on. And the answer she comes to might change everything.

This book was released on 2019-05-13 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume develops the central (though neglected) Agambenian concept of nudity along with its crucial political implications. The book discovers within The Use of Bodies a philosophical path to Agamben’s "ontology of nudity," as it is subtended by his notion of the messianic—a dual temporality of form in motion reflected in the image of a whirlpool that is autonomous although no drop of water belongs to it separately. Drawn from Paul and Benjamin (rather than Derrida), Agamben’s messianic is elaborated in this study through its embodiment in literature—Woolf’s To the Lighthouse, James’s The Aspern Papers, Brodsky’s Watermark, and Mann’s Death in Venice—in response to Agamben’s insistence on the wedding of poetry and philosophy. In particular, Coetzee’s Disgrace gives poetic form to Agamben’s focus on the dissolution of the human/animal border, the salvation of the unsavable, and "nudity"—all to illustrate Agamben’s Open without a closedness. This text shows how art serves as the house of philosophy also by taking up the nude in visual art, making the case that, in comprising chronos and kairos (the two messianic components of Agamben’s ontology of nudity), art demonstrates the constitution of form-of-life for the viewer. Emphasizing Agamben’s privileged non-unveilability/nudity, this book finally examines two major missed encounters, with Heidegger and Lacan, philosophers of the veil. Veiling to Agamben correlates with the sovereignty/bare life structure of the exception, which his ontology of nudity is meant to deactivate—as there is no such thing as a bare life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book casts a fresh look at what to date has been a relatively unexplored question: the enormous value and usefulness of the metaphor in the understanding and writing of history (and at the historical culture reflected by these metaphors). Mapping a wide range of tropes present in historiography and public discourse, the book identifies some of the key metaphorical resources employed by historians, politicians, and journalists to represent time, history, memory, the past, the present, and the future and examines a selection of analytical concepts of a temporal nature, built upon unmistakeably metaphorical foundations, such as modernity, event, process, revolution, crisis, progress, decline, or transition. The analysis of these and other pillars on which modern history has been built, whether as a philosophy of history, as an academic discipline, or as a set of events, will interest graduates and scholars dealing with the historical and social sciences and the humanities in general. Key Metaphors for History offers a broad overview of historiography and historiosophy, from an unfrequented point of view, halfway between conceptual history, theory of history and metaphorology. Moreover, it constitutes a form of self-reflection of the historian on his or her own positionality when researching and writing history.
