Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Geography To all students of geography it is a lamentable fact that there is even yet a lack of respect for this branch of science. Though we have a new geography rich and vital in its possibilities to contribute to twentieth century education, yet all too many teachers are oblivious of the significance and value of the subject and, in the schoolroom, are rattling the dry bones of formal statement and definition. Their view of the subject, and their method of teaching it, restricts its value and curtails the interest which it ought to enlist from pupils. The object of this volume is, first of all, to present and instill in the minds of teachers the true nature of modern geography. Therefore Part I is devoted to the Nature and Scope of Geography. It is hoped that its careful study will result in establishing a correct and broad view of a subject whose content is rich in edu cative possibilities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Geography in Elementary Schools This little book is an attempt to apply the newer conceptions of Geography to teaching in elementary schools. It in no way aims at being original in its treatment of the subject itself: for these we are indebted to the body of geographers who have during the last few years revolutionized the con ception of the subject, in particular to Mr. H. J. Mackinder and Dr. A. J. Herbertson, to Whose works frequent reference is made in the following pages. We felt, however, that in regard to the teaching of Geography in elementary schools, the central idea for which they are struggling - that Geography is, above all things, the examination of the effect of natural agencies on human affairs - is not yet sufficiently recognized and acted upon, and our alm IS to throw out some suggestions as to changes in the teaching which we believe would help the better realization of this idea. In the case of branches of the subject which have only recently come into prominence, we have given some outline of the subject-matter to serve as an introduction of them to readers to whom they may be unfamiliar, and have added information as to sources from which information may be obtained. In the Index the pages where subjects are treated most fully have been printed in black type. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Geography: Suggestions Regarding Principles and Methods for the Use of Teachers For some years past there has been a growing recog nition of the extremely unsatisfactory position of Geography in the general educational system of this country. Various suggestions and efforts have been made to place the subject on a better footing. But reform in such matters is necessarily Slow. Inveterate habits of use and wont are apt to blind us to the need for change, and any attempt to alter the existing sys tem touches many different kinds of vested interests. Even those who sympathise with the proposals for reform raise their hands in despair, and ask where, amid the crowd of subjects now demanded, room is to be found for any new topic, or for any expansion of an old one. I fully recognise the gravity of these difficulties, and am by no means sanguine that they are all likely soon to be cleared away. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geography for Children: Or a Short and Easy Method of Teaching and Learning Geography Children should have a Map of their own Na tion, and study that before any other. And in order to their more speedy improvement, the master should assist his pupil in finding out upon the map the particular place of which his lesson treats, and at a future time examine him as to his recollection of what he has leafned, in order to fix his atten tion, and that he may retain the facts. It is highly necessary that the different parts of each of these maps should be distinguished by different colours, or at least by points or lines. To render the scholar acquainted with the meaning of geographical terms, two Prints are given, which likewise serve to assist the teacher in explaining them to his p ils. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
