Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Physics and Chemistry Second Stage This book is the second of three little volumes containing a course of experimental work on the elementary principles of Physics and Chemistry. A knowledge of the scientific meaning of such facts of ordinary experience as are described and examined in this and the two companion volumes ought to be possessed by everyone. Wherever the study of science is being commenced, it should be through the consideration of the properties of familiar things: for this is the best way to encourage an intelligent interest in scientific reasons and results. The course of work here followed is thus as suitable for the lower forms of secondary schools as for schools of other grades. The value of practical exercises in all scientific instruction, however elementary, is now so widely recognised that it is almost unnecessary to advise that the experiments described in each lesson should be actually performed. Unfortunately, it is not often possible to provide accommodation and apparatus sufficient to enable individual pupils to experiment. This difficulty has been borne in mind in designing the form of the following lessons, each of which is divided into two parts - the first consisting of instructions for the performance of simple experiments, the second of explanations of the principles taught by the practical work. When circumstances permit, every pupil should perform the experiments, and when this is impossible he should see them done by someone else. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Physics and Chemistry: First Stage A few words will explain the scope and purpose of this little book. In 1898 a course of elementary physics and chemistry was introduced into the Code of the Education Department as a specific subject in which instruction could be given in the upper standards of elementary schools. The syllabus is divided into three parts, and the first of these is here dealt with. The course is well adapted for experimental work by indi vidual children, and, as it forms a satisfactory introduction to the study of science, it is suitable for the lower forms of secondary schools as well as for pupils in the upper standards of elementary schools. Every teacher now understands the importance of practical exercises in all scientific instruction, however elementary. Unfortunately, it is not as yet always possible to provide accommodation and apparatus sufficient to enable individual pupils to experiment. This difficulty has been borne in mind in designing the form of the following lessons, each of which is divided into two parts - the first consisting of instructions for the performance of simple experiments, the second of explanations of the principles taught by the practical work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemistry and Its Uses: A Textbook for Secondary Schools Throughout the text a great many items of interesting in formation as well as supplementary explanation have been thrown into subordinate type. It is believed that the matter in large type is complete in itself and nowhere dependent on the subordinate paragraphs. However, it is thought that so much of interest will be found in these paragraphs that the teacher can easily induce the student to read them even if they are regarded as excess material. Directions for laboratory work will be found in a separate volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Physics and Chemistry: Third Stage This book is the last of three little volumes containing a course of elementary Physics and Chemistry based upon a syllabus of work approved several years ago by the Board of Education as suitable for the upper standards of elementary schools. The object of the instruction prescribed is not so much to convey information as to develop a scientific habit of thinking in the pupils, and it is in sympathy with this spirit that the books have been prepared. Wherever the study of science is being commenced, it should be through the consideration of the properties of familiar things; for this is the best way to encourage an intelligent interest in scientific reasons and results. The course of work here followed is thus as suitable for the lower forms of secondary schools as for schools of other grades. A knowledge of the scientific meaning of such facts of ordinary experience as are described and examined in this and the two companion volumes should, indeed, be possessed by everyone. The value of practical exercises in all scientific instruction, however elementary, is now so widely recognised that it is almost unnecessary to advise that the experiments described in each lesson should be actually performed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Principles of Chemistry: For the Use of Colleges and Schools It failed to apply itself to the careful collection and study of facts in order to science. Facts in nature are the expression of the Divine will, in the government of the physical world. The universe of matter is made up of facts, which, observed, traced out, and arranged, lead us to the knowledge of certain laws and forces which proceed directly from the mind of God. These are the laws of nature science is but the exposition of them, and of science based upon such grounds. The ancient Philosophy was completely ignorant. Where possible, the teacher could opportunely omit the experiments and take the class on an excursion through concerns dependent upon chemical principles - gas and dye houses, fertili zer works, for examples. (see Lesson XXVII.) In Lesson XXXV, it is suggested that the teacher read to the class from Prof. King's The Soil (macmillan pp. 7 6-106, instead of laboratory work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemistry for Organised Schools of Science These two methods form the special merits of this text-book. It shows what boys and girls (from 13 to 15 years of age) can do and understand in experiment and in theory. The book is the patient result of years of practical teaching and observation in young people in experiments, in demonstration-lessons, and of class-lessons. It shows the fruit of much thought and consulta tion, and the strict exclusion of what would be impracticable, useless, or irrelevant. N 0 experiments are included in it but have been practically done in the laboratory, and yet alternative experiments afford variety to the lessons, and add suggestive ness to the teaching of them. The abundance of exercises and questions is intended to present the meaning of the experiments in as many different aspects as possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science for the School and Family:, Chemistry, Vol. 2 The sections relating to Chemical Philosophy, especially in Chapters II., III., and IV have been entirely rewritten; the chapter on Galvanism in the first edition has been omitted, the subject being now treated in connec tion with Physics; a brief chapter on Spectrum Analysis has been added; and, lastly, the Metric System of Weights and Measures and the Centigrade Thermometer have been adopted as standards throughout the work. Tables explaining these standards are given in an Appendix. Many wood-cuts have been added, and nearly all are new. The intro duction of two sizes of type may aid the teacher in the instruction of young er scholars. The questions in this edition are placed at the end of each chapter, instead of being collected at the end of the book. Finally, the editor expresses the hope that he has not entire] y obliterated the pleasant, familiar manner of treating the subject so happily adopted by the author and so successfully carried out. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Junior Grade Science: An Introductory Course of Physics and Chemistry for Irish Intermediate Schools IN the compilation of this book the object has been to provide in convenient form a course in Physics and Chemistry suitable for use in connection with the new syllabus prescribed for Junior Grade students by the-department of Agriculture and Technical Instruction for Ireland. It is interesting to note, in connection with the new Irish syllabuses in science, that they anticipate by about a year the conclusions of Sir J. J. Thomson's Committee appointed to enquire into the Position of Natural Science in the Educational System of Great Britain. The report states that A general course in science should fulfil two functions; (a) it should train the mind of the student to reason about things he has observed for himself and develop his powers of weighing and interpreting evidence; (b) it should also make him acquainted with the broad outlines of great scientific principles, with the way in which these principles are exemplified in familiar phenomena and with their applications to the service of man. Further, the report points out that the time allotted to the study of science, even if on the most liberal scale, does not permit the various branches of science to receive the detailed treatment possible where only one or two branches are attempted. There must necessarily be great gaps in the student's knowledge of these branches, but in the general course we think these should be distributed, rather than that one or more of these branches should escape consideration altogether. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Physical Chemistry Excepting the chapter on Phases, this book represents what I have been in the habit of teaching the Senior Class in the Chemical Course at Rutgers College. I find lectures very unsatisfactory. The subject needs much thought, and the student does not seem able to get the proper material for this from notes, unless the lectures are made mere dictations. Besides, Physical Chemistry has attained such development that it is well to put a certain part of it in permanent text book form now, for whatsoever changes in our views time may bring, certain ideas we now have will not change. These fundamental ideas I have tried to put into this little book. Of course, I have also included some theories and ideas that later on may have to be rejected. That cannot be helped. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Chemistry With Its Practical Applications In preparing this book for use in secondary schools, I have endeavored to look at the science from the viewpoint of the students themselves. The fault with many texts upon the same subject is that the position of the learner has been disregarded; the books have been encyclopaaedic; they have presented a great number of facts as a skeleton or framework, but this skeleton has not been clothed with muscle and animated with life. No more fascinating subject finds a place in the curricula of our secondary schools, yet to the average student chemistry is too often but an irksome task. In the present work I have omitted much that is often given in an elementary text, while at the same time entering more into that detail which gives lively interest to the subject. It has been my aim to show, whenever possible, the practical application of the science to the everyday affairs of life; in other words, to emphasize industrial and commercial chemistry. At the same time the fundamental principles of the science have not been forgotten; on the contrary, they have been emphasized even more than is usual in an elementary chemistry. This has been rendered possible by the omission of much that can never be either of interest or of value to the beginner. Recognizing the fact that science must be taught inductively by experiment, some authors have assumed that the student must gain all his knowledge of chemistry in this way. No greater mistake could be made. The science has been hundreds of years in reaching its present development, and much must be accepted by the student without any effort to work it out for himself.
