Book excerpt: This study reviewed the processes utilized by the Teacher Evaluation School District (TESD) to evaluate teachers and the extent to which the process is perceived to impact professional growth. The purpose of the study was to analyze data that might present alternative recommendations that could improve the districts teacher evaluation system. Specifically, the study examined the perceptions of principals, supervisors, and teachers regarding the current teacher evaluation system and supervisory practices; this study also examined the extent to which these practices affect professional growth and the development of annual performance reviews (APRs) and professional development plans (PDPs); it also attempted to identify possible improvements for future practice. Data was collected using three methods. The researcher conducted 12 interviews with evaluators including four subject area supervisors responsible for curriculum and instruction in the areas of Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies, four vice principals, and four principals. The researcher also surveyed approximately 250 middle school teachers from all five middle schools and received 160 responses. Finally, the researcher personnel files from the 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years of 30 tenured teachers. The findings of the study indicated that the teacher evaluation system employed by the TESD does not promote the professional growth of teachers. Furthermore, the data suggested the educators are open to implementing new methods within the evaluation system. Specifically, the educators are in favor of increasing the frequency of observations and implementing differentiated practices for supervision and evaluation. The most popular suggestion was the addition of walkthrough observations. Finally, the data also revealed the educators are confident in the capabilities of the personnel responsible for supervision and evaluation.
