Discover the lore of trees, including: Hackberry Tree - encourages someone to continuously do their best Manchineel Tree - it is so toxic that the smoke from a burning tree can cause blindness, and it is not even advised to inhale the air around the tree Bark from the Bird Cherry Tree was placed on doors during medieval times to ward off plague Washi paper is created from the inner bark of the Paper Mulberry Tree. Imagine developing a spiritual connection with a tree in a way that exceeds visual perception; where learning its meaning and value simultaneously improves your own mental and physical wellness. Throughout history, floriographies--flower dictionaries--have gained notoriety for regulating human emotions and giving depth, symbolism, and meaning to extremely delicate aspects of nature. Following the success of The Complete Language of Herbs and its predecessor The Complete Language of Flowers, author S. Theresa Dietz continues this custom with The Complete Language of Trees. Coupled with two indexes, one for searching by common tree name and the other organized by meaning, Dietz cleverly connects quality time in nature with the overall improvement of mental health by developing a stunningly depicted dictionary for gardeners, environmentalists, and nature lovers alike.

Every single day, for over three years, he created a watercolor illustration and wrote a short essay about whatever came to mind that day and posted it on his blog. These are some of the collected favorites along with some brand new musings. With over 180 illustrations, this book is part personal memoir and sometimes just a randomly fun romp through the sillier bits of this crazy world we all inhabit. Written to take on the impossible task of inspiring creativity, unleashing your inner child, and instilling hope, it will, at the very least, make you smile and touch your heart.

Book excerpt: When you want to enjoy the taste of a fresh citrus fruit, whether it is squeezing your own orange juice, or adding a dash of lemon to your favorite dish, you probably run off to the produce aisle and pick something that looks like the best of the bunch. You don't stop to wonder if the fruit was sprayed with preservatives and pest sprays, or if it's not as fresh as the label would have you believe. You probably don't know that some citrus fruits are dyed to give them that deep, beautiful coloration. Not to mention, the number of hands that touch it before it gets to your table. "If it looks good, it must be good." What if I told you that you can grow citrus trees in your own backyard or even start a small balcony orchard, and that it's not as complicated as you would think? All you need is soil, plants, commitment, and a guide book to show you the way. Well, this is that guide book! With a little know how, you can grow your citrus trees just about anywhere, even indoors. This guide will help you through the critical stages in your tree's development and have you harvesting your own fruits in the blink of an eye. Once you have mastered growing one type of citrus fruit, you'll see that they all are quite similar to grow. Later in this book, you will learn the technical side of growing your own citrus trees at home, including the layout of the orchard, climate requirements, irrigation techniques, leaf sampling, planting tips, and more to help your citrus tree survive and thrive for many years of fresh, homegrown citrus fruits. Ready to get started?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a new perspective on prosodically marked declaratives, wh-exclamatives, and discourse particles in the Madrid variety of Spanish. It argues that some marked forms differ from unmarked forms in that they encode modal evaluations of the at-issue meaning. Two epistemic evaluations that can be shown to be encoded by intonation in Spanish are obviousness and mirativity, which present the at-issue meaning as expected and unexpected, respectively. An empirical investigation via a production experiment finds that they are associated with distinct intonational features under constant focus scope, with stances of (dis)agreement showing an impact on obvious declaratives. Wh-exclamatives are found not to differ significantly in intonational marking from neutral declaratives, showing that they need not be miratives. Moreover, we find that intonational marking on different discourse particles in natural dialogue correlates with their meaning contribution without being fully determined by it. In part, these findings quantitatively confirm previous qualitative findings on the meaning of intonational configurations in Madrid Spanish. But they also add new insights on the role intonation plays in the negotiation of commitments and expectations between interlocutors.
