These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside The Syrian Christ: Look inside the book: The need of the Western readers of the Bible is, in my judgment, to enter sympathetically and intelligently into the atmosphere in which the books of the Scriptures first took form: to have real intellectual, as well as spiritual, fellowship with those Orientals who sought {vii} earnestly in their own way to give tangible form to those great spiritual truths which have been, and ever shall be, humanity's most precious heritage. ...Matthew's Gospel, the twentieth verse, it is said of Joseph, 'But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. ...Either that a sum of {17} money be 'given to the saint' upon the advent of the child, or that the child be carried to the same sanctuary on another zeara with gifts, and so forth, or that his hair will not be cut until he is seven years old, and then cut for the first time before the image of his patron saint at the shrine, or some other act of pious fulfillment.

Syria Crucified seeks to contribute to better understanding in the West by giving a voice to individual Syrian Christians living in exile from their homeland. These men and women have undergone horrific trauma and loss without losing their faith in God or the ability to forgive their persecutors. Their first-person accounts, framed by the authors' narration for historical, cultural, and geopolitical context, are both edifying and inspiring.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Syrian Church in India The Syrian Church in India, which is sometimes called the Church of the Christians of St Thomas, has hitherto been but little known in the West. The first of the European nations that held intercourse with it was the Portuguese, and it was from the records of the ecclesiastical relations between the Portuguese and the Syrians that Michael Geddes compiled his 'History of the Church of Malabar' (1694), which was the first work in English on the subject, and is still of considerable value. Gibbon, who approached it by a different route, introduced into a memorable chapter of the 'Decline and Fall' a notice of the ancient Church which for comprehensiveness of grasp and general accuracy has not been surpassed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the New Testament Canon in the Syrian Church The study of the relation of the various documents which form the material of the dissertation has something fascinating, when the religious impulses are seen at work. The Syrians were no great literary people, but they were aglow for Christ. The throbbing of their passionate love for the Savior, which distinguishes them later on, may be felt here already in the various attempts which they made to translate his gospel into their own language. This recompenses us in a certain sense for the scanty information which we have of the beginning of Christianity in Syria. Three translations of the gospels, made at pretty nearly the same time, evidence the strength of the Christian life at the very beginning. It is important that this religious element be not overlooked. I count myself happy that my teacher, Professor Gottheil, has allowed me to take this subject for my dissertation, and that he has always directed my attention to matters of special interest for a theological student. It is due to this that I could combine my theological with my oriental studies. I want to thank him most heartily for his teaching and the kind interest he has always taken in my work. I am impelled also to thank my teacher, Professor McGiffert. To him I owe my training in historical criticism; he suggested the theme to me, and in his seminar the thesis was first read. His kind interest has never been wanting. This dissertation was finished in the spring of last year; therefore the newer publications could not be consulted. They would, however, have modified none of the results. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: In The Churches of Syrian Antioch (300-638 CE) Wendy Mayer and Pauline Allen for the first time draw together all of the existing evidence concerning the Christian worship sites of this influential late-antique city, with significantly new results in a number of cases. In addition to providing a catalogue of the worship sites, in which each entry critiques and summarizes the available data, supplemented by photographs from the excavations, the authors analyze the data from a number of perspectives. These include the political, economic and natural forces that influenced the construction, alteration and reconstruction of churches and martyria, and the political, liturgical and social use and function of these buildings. Among the results is an emerging awareness of the extent of the lacunae and biases in the sources, and of the influence of these on interpretation of the city's churches in the past. What also rises to the fore is the significant role played by the schisms within the Christian community that dominated the city's landscape for much of these centuries.

Book excerpt: "The striking contrasts in Oriental and Western types of thought and expression have often proved grave obstacles to our understanding of the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. It is to overcome some of these difficulties and to illumine from a new angle the life and teachings of Jesus that Mr. Rihbany has written 'The Syrian Christ.' The author's birth and early training, in Oriental surroundings little changed since the days of Jesus, and his thorough schooling for the last twenty-five years in American life and progressive Western thought specially qualify him to interpret the biblical atmosphere and customs in terms that appeal to the American mind. We must not forget that Jesus Christ was a Syrian peasant and that his message comes to us in an Oriental garb....Mr. Rihbany's delightful discourses on the customs of the common folk of Syria, drawn in part from his own early experience, and illumined by his wealth of historical and literary knowledge, will give the reader a sympathetic understanding of biblical incidents and teachings. The author does not write a story of Jesus' life, but rather makes clearer many of its episodes and much of the Master's teachings." -The Independent "Fresh light on the life and teachings of Christ, for Jesus, as a prophet and seer, belongs to all races and all ages, but in His modes of thought and life, he was distinctly a Syrian.. Mr. Rihbany...is eminently fitted by temperament, antecedents, and experience to interpret the Christ of the Gospel in the terms of his native country." -Friends' Intelligencer "Mr. Rihbany interprets the famous passages regarding non-resistance to evil, loving one's enemies, turning the other cheek, as hyperbolic Oriental sayings tending to decrease brutal conduct and to make tranquil living a disposition among men." -Current Opinion "This interesting book, written by Mr. Abraham Mitrie Rihbany, a Syrian by birth and, as he says in his preface, an American by choice, will prove most helpful to unlearned and untraveled readers." -The Contemporary Review "Here in this book one breathes the atmosphere of the land of Jesus, and Jesus talks to us as he did to his first disciples." -The Homiletic Review "In its insight into Syrian life the book is delightful; in its interpretation of the teachings of Jesus it is inspiring." -New York Herald "Not merely a volume for the minister's study; it is for the library of every student of the Bible." -New York Evening Post "When a Syrian scholar discusses the Syrian Christ and seeks to interpret Him in the light of a familiar knowledge of His land and people, the consequences cannot fail to be edifying, especially when the motives are constructive and the purpose is to throw light." -The Living Church "Many interesting chapters on speaking in parables, swearing, imprecations, family feasts, the treatment of guests, the market place, the housetop, the vineyard and the shepherds. The writer came to this country a penniless immigrant, and lost his faith in Protestant surroundings. He is a champion of 'undogmatic' Christianity, and gives forth some undigested statements about the simple faith of Christ being changed into an authoritative creed by ambitious ecclesiastics and politicians." -Catholic World
