Book excerpt: Simple difunctional peptides containing alanine and the diamine or di-acid monomers of nylon 6.6 were prepared by methods employed in peptide synthesis using 4-nitrophenyl esters. These compounds were intended for use as precursors in polymer formation. It was found that satisfactory polymers of a nylon type and containing alanine could not be prepared by conventional peptide synthesis techniques. The maximum molecular weight obtained was about 5,000. It was found possible to prepare polymers with a potential for fibre-formation, from mixtures of modified nylon salts containing the alanine derivatives prepared in the first part, by hot polycondensation techniques......
