Book excerpt: One of the most elusive topics in the study of high temperature superconductors (HTCS) is the orbital symmetry of the superconducting order parameter?. The low temperature T behavior observed in many experiments suggests that? might exhibit line nodes, as expected for dx{sub -y}2 orbital symmetry. However, such behavior also arises from intrinsic proximity coupling and surface states, etc. The paramagnetic Meissner effect, once cited as indirect evidence for a d-wave?, was recently observed in Nb. Some phase-sensitive Josephson junction experiments gave strong evidence for a substantial isotropic, or s-wave, component to?, whereas others supported the above d-wave form. However, such experiments are intrinsically unreliable in experimental geometries with sample corners, or with meandering grain boundary junctions and stoichiometry inhomogeneities. Finally, the pseudogap observed recently in underdoped HTCS could arise from a charge-density wave.

Bednorz and K. A. Müller, a considerable progress has been made and several important scientific problems have emerged. Within this NATO Advanced Study Institute our intention was to focus mainly on the controversial topic of the symmetry of the superconducting gap and given the very short coherence length, the role of fluctuations. The Institute on ‘The Gap Symmetry and Fluctuations in High- Superconductors’ took place in the “Institut d’Etudes Scientifiques de Cargèse” in Corsica, France, between 1 - 13 September 1997. The 110 participantsfrom 18 countries (yet 30 nationalities) including 23 full time lecturers, have spent two memorable weeks in this charming Mediterranean resort. All lecturers were asked to prepare pedagogical papers to clearly present the central physical idea behind specific model or experiment. The better understanding of physics of high temperature superconductivity is certainly needed to guide the development of applications of these materials in high and weak current devices.

Book excerpt: In this thesis I present measurements of bimetallic Pb-Au-YBCO dc SQUIDs (Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices) and Josephson junctions that provide an important clue to the origin of the pairing mechanism for high temperature superconductivity in the cuprates. By probing the momentum space anisotropy of the phase of the superconducting order parameter, we can experimentally determine the symmetry of the superconducting pairing state in YBCO and distinguish between the leading candidate states that have been proposed. We find that the superconducting order parameter in YBCO changes sign between orthogonal directions in momentum space, unlike the isotropic order parameter in conventional superconductors. The sign change of the order parameter is consistent with a $dsb{xsp2-ysp2}$ pairing state symmetry.

Book excerpt: Spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking phases, such as the electronic nematic phase and charge and spin stripe phases, are commonly found in the phase diagram of strongly correlated materials including many of the high-temperature superconductors. This thesis is essentially a study of how tuning parameters, namely applied uniaxial stress and applied magnetic field, can interact with the rotational symmetry-breaking order parameters of these phases, either to probe the system and better understand its intrinsic properties or to create new states in the system that are not spontaneously generated. This thesis discusses the development of a methodology which combines synchrotron x-ray techniques and transport measurements of a single crystal sample mounted to a uniaxial stress device. This methodology is used in iron-based high temperature superconducting materials to probe the nematic and magnetic phases. In Co-doped BaFe2As2, the coupling between electronic nematicity, the crystal lattice and the resistivity anisotropy is probed by strain, and a temperature and phase independent transport-structural correspondence is demonstrated. In EuFe2As2, the effects of nematicity on the Eu localized magnetic order is demonstrated from a strongly anisotropic antiferromagnetic coupling between Eu moments. While the work in this thesis is primarily focused on iron-based superconductors, these ideas are very general to the field of condensed matter physics, and this methodology of applied fields combined with x-ray measurements developed here is broadly applicable to systems with structural domains, large magnetoelastic coupling, and other strongly correlated electron effects.

This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to the record high superconducting transition temperature (T{sub c}), high temperature cuprate superconductors are characterized by their unusual superconducting properties below T{sub c}, and anomalous normal state properties above T{sub c}. In the superconducting state, although it has long been realized that superconductivity still involves Cooper pairs, as in the traditional BCS theory, the experimentally determined d-wave pairing is different from the usual s-wave pairing found in conventional superconductors. The identification of the pairing mechanism in cuprate superconductors remains an outstanding issue. The normal state properties, particularly in the underdoped region, have been found to be at odd with conventional metals which is usually described by Fermi liquid theory; instead, the normal state at optimal doping fits better with the marginal Fermi liquid phenomenology. Most notable is the observation of the pseudogap state in the underdoped region above T{sub c}. As in other strongly correlated electrons systems, these unusual properties stem from the interplay between electronic, magnetic, lattice and orbital degrees of freedom. Understanding the microscopic process involved in these materials and the interaction of electrons with other entities is essential to understand the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity. Since the discovery of high-T{sub c} superconductivity in cuprates, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has provided key experimental insights in revealing the electronic structure of high temperature superconductors. These include, among others, the earliest identification of dispersion and a large Fermi surface, an anisotropic superconducting gap suggestive of a d-wave order parameter, and an observation of the pseudogap in underdoped samples. In the mean time, this technique itself has experienced a dramatic improvement in its energy and momentum resolutions, leading to a series of new discoveries not thought possible only a decade ago. This revolution of the ARPES technique and its scientific impact result from dramatic advances in four essential components: instrumental resolution and efficiency, sample manipulation, high quality samples and well-matched scientific issues. The purpose of this treatise is to go through the prominent results obtained from ARPES on cuprate superconductors. Because there have been a number of recent reviews on the electronic structures of high-T{sub c} materials, we will mainly present the latest results not covered previously, with a special attention given on the electron-phonon interaction in cuprate superconductors. What has emerged is rich information about the anomalous electron-phonon interaction well beyond the traditional views of the subject. It exhibits strong doping, momentum and phonon symmetry dependence, and shows complex interplay with the strong electron-electron interaction in these materials. ARPES experiments have been instrumental in identifying the electronic structure, observing and detailing the electron-phonon mode coupling behavior, and mapping the doping evolution of the high-T{sub c} cuprates. The spectra evolve from the strongly coupled, polaronic spectra seen in underdoped cuprates to the Migdal-Eliashberg like spectra seen in the optimally and overdoped cuprates. In addition to the marked doping dependence, the cuprates exhibit pronounced anisotropy with direction in the Brillouin zone: sharp quasiparticles along the nodal direction that broaden significantly in the anti-nodal region of the underdoped cuprates, an anisotropic electron-phonon coupling vertex for particular modes identified in the optimal and overdoped compounds, and preferential scattering across the two parallel pieces of Fermi surface in the antinodal region for all doping levels. This also contributes to the pseudogap effect. To the extent that the Migdal-Eliashberg picture applies, the spectra of the cuprates bear resemblance to that seen in established strongly coupled electron-phonon superconductors such as Pb. On the other hand, the cuprates deviate from this conventional picture. In the underdoped regime, the carriers are best understood as small polarons in an antiferromagnetic, highly electron correlated background, while the doped compounds require an anisotropic electron-phonon vertex to detail the prominent mode coupling signatures in the superconducting state. Electronic vertex corrections to the electron-phonon coupling furthermore may enhance, and for certain phonons, determine, the anisotropy of the electron-phonon coupling. A consistent picture emerges of the cuprates, combining strong, anisotropic electron-phonon coupling, particular phonon modes that could give rise to such a coupling, and an electron-electron interaction modifying the el-ph vertex.

Book excerpt: Identifying the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in the recently-discovered ferrooxypnictide family of superconductors, RFeAsO{sub 1-x}F{sub y}, where R is a rare earth, is a high priority. Many of the proposed order parameters have internal [pi] phase shifts, like the d-wave order found in the cuprates, which would result in direction-dependent phase shifts in tunneling. In dense polycrystalline samples, these phase shifts in turn would result in spontaneous orbital currents and magnetization in the superconducting state. We perform scanning SQUID microscopy on a dense polycrystalline sample of NdFeAsO{sub 0.94}F{sub 0.06} with T{sub c} = 48K and find no such spontaneous currents, ruling out many of the proposed order parameters.
