Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural and literary historians investigate the unique literary bridge between German-speaking women and the "New World," examining novels, films, travel literature, poetry, erotica, and photography. In a 1798 novel by Sophie von La Roche, a European woman swims across a cold North American lake seeking help from the local indigenous tribe to deliver a baby. In a 2008 San Francisco travel guide, Milena Moser, the self-proclaimed "Patron Saint of Desperate Swiss Housewives," ponders the guilty pleasures of a media-saturated world. Wildly disparate, these two texts reveal the historical arc of a much larger literary constellation: the literature of German-speaking women who interact with the New World. In this volume, cultural historians from around the world investigate this unique literary bridge between two hemispheres, focusing on New-World texts written by female authors from Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. Encompassing a broad range of genres including novels, films, travel literature, poetry, erotica, and even photography, the essays include women's experiences across both American continents. Many of the primary literary texts discussed in this volume are available in the online collections of Sophie: A Digital Library of Works by German-Speaking Women (http: //sophie.byu.edu/). Book Synopsis Grand Urban Rules by : Alex Lehnerer
Download or read book Grand Urban Rules written by Alex Lehnerer and published by 010 Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Grand Urban Rules offers a compilation and discussion of significant rules invented and implemented by European, North American, and Asian cities. The reader does not only get an overview of the functionality and repercussions of these rule sets but also gains insight into the context and situation of the specific city through the lens of rule-based governance: a citys code as the inverted, abstracted and extracted image of a citys actual situation. Setting standards is first and foremost a cultural act. We map cities by their rules! The publication is based on a database of approximately 100 relevant urban rules researched over the past three years at the ETH Zurich. These rules describe built form with regard to physical characteristics, qualities, and consequences as well as the distribution of program, density, urban performance, and aesthetics."--Publisher's description.

Book Synopsis The Business of Luxury by : Fabio Duma
Download or read book The Business of Luxury written by Fabio Duma and published by vdf Hochschulverlag AG. This book was released on 2015-02-16 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luxury has been fascinating humanity for millennia and it seems that it will continue to do so in the future. As we can see in developed countries with populations living in relative affluence, luxury takes different forms, becoming less materialistic when people already own a house, two cars and a boat, but now crave wellness treatments and more recreational time. However, luxury will always have a material aspect as embodied by beautiful products made from exclusive materials by skilled artisans with an eye for detail. One way or another, luxury is big business and an important economic factor all over the world, especially in Switzerland, a country with few natural resources to speak of but a wealth of knowledge when it comes to services (e.g. hotel management) and the manufacture of exclusive products such as watches, textiles, and of course chocolate – to name just a few. Indeed, a significant proportion of Swiss GDP comes from the production of luxury goods which are exported all over the world. In this publication we examine the phenomenon of luxury, ist roots, and ist economic impact both globally and in Switzerland. You will learn more about global luxury markets, well-known and niche market players, as well as major trends shaping the definition of luxury and the management and marketing of luxury brands in the future.
