Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Trade and Distribution, grade: 74% - A, University of Sunderland, language: English, abstract: International trade can to some extent be explained by the theory of absolute and comparative advantage. By nature, countries have distinctive immobile production factors and hence different relative production costs for the same good/service (Lawler and Seddighi, 2001). The theory of the absolute advantage by Adam Smith is that a country should specialise on the product/service where it has an absolute advantage over any other country in order to increase productivity and output. Ricardo’s theory of the comparative advantage says a country should export products where it has the greatest comparative advantage or where the comparative disadvantage is smallest and should import goods in which its comparative disadvantage is greatest (Trebilcock and Howse, 2005). This model still represents the basis for international trade theory, but it was further modified and reformulated which will be discussed later on. The pharmaceutical industry in Switzerland by looking at innovation, R&D expenditure, export figures and the growth level will be analysed. All this is interrelated to theoretical background of newer trade theories of Vernon, Krugman and Cantwell.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dean of business historians continues his masterful chronicle of the transforming revolutions of the twentieth century begun in Inventing the Electronic Century. Alfred Chandler argues that only with consistent attention to research and development and an emphasis on long-term corporate strategies could firms remain successful over time. He details these processes for nearly every major chemical and pharmaceutical firm, demonstrating why some companies forged ahead while others failed. By the end of World War II, the chemical and pharmaceutical industries were transformed by the commercializing of new learning, the petrochemical and the antibiotic revolutions. But by the 1970s, chemical science was no longer providing the new learning necessary to commercialize more products, although new directions flourished in the pharmaceutical industries. In the 1980s, major drug companies, including Eli Lilly, Merck, and Schering Plough, commercialized the first biotechnology products, and as the twenty-first century began, the infrastructure of this biotechnology revolution was comparable to that of the second industrial revolution just before World War I and the information revolution of the 1960s. Shaping the Industrial Century is a major contribution to our understanding of the most dynamic industries of the modern era.

This book investigates and highlights a set of proactive strategies. The authors focus on three sources of pharmaceutical innovation: new management methods, new technologies, and new forms of internationalization. Their findings are illustrated in the case of the Swiss pharmaceutical industry, the leading exporter of pharmaceutical products in percentage of GDP, and some of its main pharmaceutical firms such as Novartis and Hoffmann-La Roche.

Book excerpt: As pharmaceutical companies strive to develop safer medicines at a lower cost, they must keep pace with the rapid growth of technology and research methodologies. Defying the misconception of process chemistry as mere scale-up work, Process Chemistry in the Pharmaceutical Industry, Vol. 2: Challenges in an Ever Changing Climate explores novel applications of synthetic, physical, and analytical chemistry in drug discovery and development. It offers an accurate depiction of the most up-to-date process research and development methods applied to synthesis, clinical trials, and commercializing drug candidates. The second installment in this progressive series, this volumereviews the latest breakthroughs to advance process chemistry, including asymmetric synthesis, crystallization, morphology, enzymatic intervention, green chemistry, macromolecules (monoclonal antibodies, biological molecules, polymers), enantioselectivity, organometallic chemistry, process analytical tools, chemical engineering controls, regulatory compliance, and outsourcing/globalization. It explores new approaches to synthetic processes, examines the latest safety methods and experiment design, and suggests realistic solutions to problems encountered in manufacturing and process development. Significant topics include atom economy, ease of synthesis, instrumentation, automization, quality control, cost considerations, green practices, and future trends. Jointly edited by the founder/president of Delphian Pharmaceuticals and the director of Chemical R&D at Pfizer, this book brings together contributions byreputed scientists, technologists, engineers, and professors from leading academic institutions, such as the Imperial College, UK, the University of Tokyo, ETH, Switzerland, the International University at Bermen, Germany, and the University of Connecticut, USA, and from principal pharmaceutical companies that include Merck, Bristol Myers Squibb, Pfizer, Novartis, Eli Lilly, Astrazeneca and DSM.

Book excerpt: The Swiss pharmaceutical industry is world-famous, and of today's top five global pharmaceutical businesses, two are Swiss - Roche and Novartis. Novartis was created in 1996 from a merger between three other major companies, Ciba, Geigy and Sandoz (the merger was the biggest ever in business history worldwide up to that point), but despite being a relatively new name, it is rooted in over 150 years of history. Focusing on the emergence of Novartis, this authoritative book is also the fascinating story of how Switzerland's pharmaceutical industry grew out of early dye-production for textiles in the mid nineteenth century, scored major triumphs with the introduction of products such as DDT and Valium in the twentieth century, and developed into the far-reaching international healthcare providers of today.

Book excerpt: Now updated - the authoritative reference on one of the most exciting and challenging areas of the modern chemical industry This highly readable and informative reference continues to take a comprehensive, in-depth view of the products, markets, and technology of the fine chemicals industry and business. Dr. Peter Pollak, one of the foremost authorities in the field, provides an insider's unique perspective on fine chemicals from both a technological and a commercial viewpoint, covering all recent developments. He provides ample facts and figures including sixty-three tables, thirty figures, and nineteen photo inserts - making this a well-illustrated and documented text. This reference is divided into three parts: Part One: The Industry discusses the types of fine chemical companies, the range of products and services, the role of research and development, the underlying technologies, and the challenges facing management Part Two: The Business explores the key markets for fine chemicals - such as the pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and animal health industries - and the relevant marketing strategies, as well as the ins and outs of pricing, distribution channels, intellectual property rights, account management, and promotion Part Three: Outlook examines trends such as globalization and outsourcing, forecasts future growth and development by industry segment, and discusses prerequisites for success in the field This new edition features both updated and new information on the offer/demand balance for fine chemicals and the escalating impact of emerging companies in Asia, particularly from China and India. It describes the inversion of the mergers and acquisitions scenario from a seller's to a buyer's market, the broadening of the fine chemical business model, and the expanding role of biotechnology, as well as the impact of increased outsourcing of chemical manufacturing and the growing consumption of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals by the life science industry. Also included are numerous molecular structures, engineering diagrams, and tables to facilitate understanding. For a thorough understanding of the technology, the business, and the future of the fine chemicals industry, this book's insight is unprecedented. It is ideally suited for those in the industry - including employees, suppliers, customers, investors, and consulting companies - as well as academic and other research organizations, students and educators, public officials, media representatives, and anyone else who wants to understand the intricacies of the industry. Fine Chemicals has been recognized as Outstanding Academic Title 2012 (Choice, v.50, no. 05, January 2013).
